Todays record, some reports of very heavy rainfall out there today and ongoing this evening.

Tues afternoon possible thunderstorms, E, N and NE perhaps.

We have had biblical rain in NCD from about 3.30pm on.

We also got some thunder and a few flashes of lighting around that time.

Standout MUCAPE maturing in the NE tomorrow , surface temperatures getting up to 17 or 18C and Dp's into the low teens, pronounced converging winds in the afternoon in the NE with decent lower level shear and a fair amount of Deep layer shear could set off very heavy localised rainfall and some thunderstorms. Will be interesting to see if we get reports of funnels or tornadic activity in the NE or waterspouts along the coast there.

I can see northern Ireland in a weather warning tomorrow for thunderstorms and rain

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,158 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

Thunderstorm Warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Tyrone(east), Derry

Where storms are particularly frequent 20 to 30 mm of rain may build up over 2 or 3 hours. Frequent lightning, hail and gusty winds will be additional hazards in some places.

Couple of strikes off the Antrim coast now and a couple of recenet strikes off the south Wicklow coast.

Yep meteorite, some impressive lightning. Rain keeping me from heading to the local though!..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 700 ✭✭✭bazlers

Only about 2 seconds between each flash and thunder now.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,136 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Area of LP with and upper low with associated cold pool aloft moving in over Ireland on Friday . Evaporation after the front moves through from Thurs/ early Fri with spells of sunshine . Light variable winds with areas of convergence and decent vorticity from the rotating area of LP all aiding the instability which could lead to some heavy localised showers and slow moving thunderstorms, some hail possible also. Deep layer shear not looking overly strong at this stage but initial charts showing decent lapse rates.

Thunderstorms isolated in nature perhaps and more pulse type could occur about anywhere and maturing and peaking from the available warmth through the afternoon I reckon.

Any updates on the possible thunderstorm tomorrow and Saturday

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,136 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

The blue shaded area in the Lapse rate chart for tomorrow Friday( underneath the coldest upper air combined with vorticity ) showing areas with the most probability of some thunderstorms and more so the closer you get to the coastal areas along the S, SE and E being aided by converging winds and peak diurnal temperatures in the afternoon.

I've just boarded a flight from CLT down to MIA and we have been told to expect a lot of turbulence as we head into Miami 😱

They've had record breaking rain there this past 2 days ,north of 10 inches

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,693 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Nice sunny spells in Tralee with some hefty showers earlier, vivid blue skies, convection growing and moving inland.

I wonder if Meath will be added as there's just been a few strikes from a very potent looking cell in the Gonzoland area.

Good bit of thunder now around Cork harbour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,187 ✭✭✭Elmer Blooker

there’s lightning and thunder around alright but not one of any of the radars (lightning maps.org, met.ie, net weather) are showing any strikes so I presume something is down?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,767 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

Blitzortung is showing sparks around the Cork area, haven't heard anything in the city yet.

Recent shower in Greystones has produced lightning juts off the coast.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,136 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Some chance of heavy local showers and isolated thunderstorms again tomorrow with a few hail showers possible. Again maybe pulse type in nature, parameters just the better side of marginal. Again possibly peaking in the afternoon, maybe getting the most activity in the midlands N midlands and SE. Decent amount of shear in the Southern half of the country, will see if it contributes some bit in the midlands ,surface temperatures only fair though, will need decent sunny breaks to form thunderstorms.

    Claps of thunder in Kildare

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,693 ✭✭✭Dazler97

    Thunderstorm warning has been issued

Clap of thunder south of Portarlington, first I've heard this year. Long time coming.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,803 ✭✭✭snowgal

distant rumbles here near Trim, reallly dark clouds to the south of us

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,521 ✭✭✭✭dsmythy

Drifting from the North. Might blindside places normally more immune.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,693 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Ye hopefully I don't get them I want to go out for my evening walk

Big clap of thunder just now in Celbridge.

There was a rumble an hour ago too during a downpour, but it's currently dry and sunny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,161 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Clap of thunder N Kildare, looks like a potentially bigger shower/ cell moving in this direction about 15 minutes away

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,415 ✭✭✭Trebor176

Pretty sure I heard thunder a couple of minutes in Dublin 22. It's sunny though, and there's an ice cream van outside the house.

heard it as I sit in the garden with a cold beer enjoying the sunshine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,686 ✭✭✭Darwin

Big cell to my East (SW Laois) sparking away, looks like Portlaoise and Abbeyleix in the firing line. Despite very dark and ominous clouds overhead, got away with just a bit of light rain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,161 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

more rumbles. Ominous clouds to the North. Seem to be slow moving

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,227 ✭✭✭pad199207

    Lightning observed in N Kildare

  • Registered Users Posts: 206 ✭✭CirrusBusiness

Nice cell forming overhead. Rumbling away with lightning. Mt. Leinster, Carlow/Wexford border

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭adocholiday

Two very heavy showers in South Wicklow in the past half hour or so but thunder is way off in the distance. Looking at the radar the worst of it seems to be the West of my location towards Tinahely

The upper shear seems to have helped storm development later in the afternoon combined with peak diurnal heating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,187 ✭✭✭Elmer Blooker

I meant to say yesterday how surprised I was that the thunder was in Kildare and much further away than I thought, to me it sounded much closer, somewhere west of me in Dublin.

what I’m saying it seems sound can travel differently in certain atmospheric conditions, I wouldn’t normally hear thunder from as far away as Kildare in my parts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,339 ✭✭✭highdef

Tremendous downpour near Ardagh, Longford. Surprised there was no lightning, what with the intensity of the rain. Had been lovely warm sunshine just prior and the torrential rain began so quickly that I'm stick in one of the sheds for the past ten minutes.
