I see Martin McNally of Monaghan is the referee for Donegal v Armagh. Is that a good, bad, or neutral choice for us?

notice up on Ulster gaa saying no general sale, can’t actually remember the last time an Ulster final didn’t have one.

    TV for me it seems

Allegedly lets the game flow, but throws cards out for questioning his decisions.

It's been a great year so far. Hopefully we can get the job done on Sunday. It's not quite bonus territory, but doubt anyone saw this as on the cards after Down beat us last year and when the draw was made. Jim has had more of an impact than I had hoped.

We are favourites based on the 2 games played so far I guess. Even if we drew in Armagh and beat them in Croke Park. Felt like we hung on in Armagh, but they finished with a much stronger team than started. They played into our hands in the Division 2 Final.

I think if they go at us from the start, they might win. If they play it cagey, I think that might suit us. They have a very good set of forwards and some power at midfield. Will be interesting to see if Jason McGee can continue his good form. Would actually prefer to see Rafferty starting over Hughes, feel Hughes a better keeper but not as good 'outfield' - will they dare play Raferrty and have him come off his line?

If we get the good weather, it will be a hell of a day in Clones, just like we like them. In 2022, Derry ran away from us in extra time - that was the sign we were done. This year, we are much fitter and younger. I doubted a lot of these players had what it takes, but am being proved wrong and happy that is the case. I hope it continues on Sunday.

Ulster champions beating Derry/Tyrone and Armagh and winning Div 2.

He's either god or made a beast of a deal with the devil!

    Some turnaround from last summer.

i criticised gallen for his one leg approach on here a few years ago , he had some game today and kicked a lovely point off the bad foot

i think ryan mchugh was probably man of the match for his tackling alone and his two or three excellent turnovers at crucial parts of the game , jason mcgee had a monster of a second half performance too both of them and brendan mccole were the integral part of the comeback , well done tonight lads great game overall

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,124 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

they came down to ennis last year and we played them off the park for 50 minutes , until ciaran thompson kicked some super scores and took over , they have some serious talent in donegal its about getting the right man to tap into it , they have him at the moment

What a day in Clones on Sunday. A full house, a great atmosphere, warm sunshine, thunder and lightning, magnificent scores and a result decided in a split second. Peadar Mogan’s celebration in front of the hill will live long in the memory. It encapsulated the joy of the Donegal people as we were surrounded by the despair of those from Armagh.
Far large parts of the game Armagh had us on the rack. We were barely hanging on. They were isolating us at the back and getting their scores easier than us. They used their pace to great effect and didn’t allow us to set defensively. However they tried to defend their lead and through sheer willpower and magnificent shooting we reeled them back in.
It was clear from the warm up that Patton wasn’t fully fit. Apart from a small number of dead balls he kicked everything with his left foot. The one time in the game he went long it was a high floated ball that Armagh turned over and scored from. However it was, ultimately, a gamble that paid off. The other gamble was starting EBG. That was a very limited success but we will, hopefully, see the benefits later in the campaign.
Jim inherited a team that were psychologically fragile. The turnaround has been remarkable. The courage of the players to grind out that result, when they were beaten twice, is testament to the transformation that Jim has brought about. Paddy’s point and the two scores from Daire and Odhran Doherty were outstanding in the circumstances. The quality of our penalties was also excellent, especially considering our first choice penalty taker was no longer on the pitch. The five lads were remarkably composed and didn’t feel the need to play to the crowd like some of the Armagh players. Changing the order of the penalty takers in sudden death caused confusion in the Armagh ranks and you could see some of their players appealing to Joe McQuillan. It definitely broke their concentration.
Caithfidh mé a rá go raibh mé iontach bródúil ag éisteacht le Paddy tar éis an cluiche. Rinne sé job ar dóigh.
Finally, in case people are not aware, there is a bundle of three tickets for the next stage of the championship on sale for 50 euro. Great value even if it’s not so great for the blood pressure.

Just after checking dates & it looks like I'll miss the first two matches of the round robin, idiot, I bought the 3 match bundle for 50 euro last week, it was a good deal then but not looking pretty now.

I havn't seen a Donegal crowd go that wild since beating Mayo in 2012. Someone upended their drink on me in the chaos and I didn't care a bit. It wasn't a great game for the blood pressure at all, and just didn't look pretty outside of the great score taking even if the neutral analysts lauded it. There was an incredible buzz in the crowd where I was when EBG was surprisingly unveiled, even if he wasn't fully sharp. It's a sign that the at one time huge injury list is decreasing at the right time. Armagh fans were grand, and even heard some booing from young-ish Donegal fans which were met with a few dirty looks. Tyrone at McCumhaills will be interesting. Are they spooked? We need to fortify it again under Jim after 4 losses there last season.

The bugbear I'm carrying from the last the matches is that it takes us usually five minutes or more of working the ball around to get a score, and the opposition reply within a minute. Murphy called the players out during the Tyrone analyst gig for players not actually wanting the ball. There's still a bit of the old regime's mentality still floating around in their heads. The other thing, and this might be blasphemous…I think this team plays worse when McBrearty is on the field. In addition to that, he either looks unfit, injured or like he'll not fully recover from the last big injury.

Grateful to be Ulster Champions again. That one felt very special.

Didn't get the tickets earlier. Din't get online on time and they appear sold out. If anyone is selling ones or aren't able to go I'd appreciate them firing me a PM. Cheers!

I`ve been to every Ulster Final we have played in since 1972 and for me this win feels just that bit special. Why that is I have no idea other than us beating the three top teams in the province along the way after the mess we were last year and the satisfaction of seeing some of the so called media experts having to eat their words when it comes to what Jim McGuinness brings to a team.

The Armagh supporters I also found grand. It`s hard not to feel sympathy for them after the wringer thay have been through of near misses in the last few years, but I would fall well short of that for McGeeney or his sidekick Donaghy.

Against both Armagh and Tyrone we did look a bit ponderous at times in attack but for me in both of those games conceding a goal from a turnover carrying the ball into contact, a miss placed pass or dropping an attempt short would have been a massive blow and one hard to come back from. We also didn`t have Patton for the Tyrone game and even on Sunday the accuracy and distance of his right foot didn`t seem to be up to his usual standard which suggested to me he was not fully recovered from the injury he picked up against Derry which may have been a factor in our build up.

It`s difficult to know with Paddy McBrearty this year if he is off the boil a bit fitness wise or it is just that he has had very little championship footballed played, but I would tend to give him a pass as in both the Tyrone and Armagh games he has come up with the goods when the pressure was on.

The one thing for me with how quickly Armagh scored after conceding a point was how easily the waltzed through our defense without a glove being laid on them. Perhaps that was due to not wishing to give a free away with physical contact, but on the day Mc Nally wan`t being fussy in that regards. Mc Guinness even made reference in passing to how hesitant we were in defense during his speech in Donegal Town on Sunday night. The most relaxed speech I have ever heard from Jim after a game which came across as him believing this one was that bit special as well. He may not be everyone`s cup of tea but I thought we improved in that area with McColgan`s introduction.

I have been a bit tough on refs in the recent past, but hats off to Martin Mc Nally who in his first Ulster Final had an excellent day out and refereed the game as an Ulster man who understands what an Ulster Final is.

yea definitely strong celebrations for that one, beat the three top teams with Monaghan falling back. Also Think it’s a lot to do of where we were last year, felt as low as 2010 again. Personally felt a bit haunted by the 3 defeats to them in the 00s so was nice to beat armagh in an Ulster final. But definitely felt sympathy to the supporters, long time since the 08, not far off our 92 to 2011 now, to lose again on penalties… and as said was all friendly/good craic.

we seemed to go for a higher press against them and it did leave gaps, our score taking was brilliant though, gallen in particular was immense. Mcbrearty doesn’t seem very mobile at all this year but does still have the shot. There is a simple overlap play to help give him the couple yards up but hopefully it’s still injury than anything else.

Tyrone at home now feels like a quarter final shootout

I bought the 3 match package but can't make 2 out 3 games. Do you have a Ticketmaster account ?, if so & you're interested send me a DM

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Well, the 2nd time this Championship I won't be at a game, same opposition too. Saw some clips from 2011 earlier, that was a day. Cassidy's point before half time - absolutely inspirational. I think that day for me was the one where you felt something had really changed. No idea how tomorow will go, but am pretty sure Jim will really target this game for a host of reasons, not least because winner will be favourite to top the group and go straight to a QF.

Still buzzing after the Ulster Final - what a day. Ulster Championships don't get much sweeter than this one.

Definitely feels like momentum building again after a long while in the shadows, who know how far it will go but I’m really enjoying the ride so far.

Are the draws for pelim quaters etc predeterminrd or is it an open draw after the gp stages.

Group winners will face winners of 2nd/3rd place preliminary quarter finals and no repeat pairings from the group stage. Ie. Donegal would not face Tyrone Cork or Clare.

Assuming Donegal were to win the group they would avoid other group winners (Kerry, Dublin etc the likely winners).

So win this weekend is big. Straight to QF with a reasonable shot at a place in the last 4.

Not to get ahead of ourselves but to be fair we could only have dreamt of this position at the conclusion of last year's Championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

If we beat Cork and Clare lose this weekend we top the group regardless of how final round of games.

Team got on the bus and headed for Convoy straight after the game on Saturday. I have no doubt they will approach the Cork match with the same intensity we have brought to other Championship matches so far this season. Everything McGuinness has said tells me he is targeting more.

I can't see Cork making it an arm wrestle. Even if they do, I don't think they are as fit as we are. We should have another gear if we need it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,940 ✭✭✭Ceist_Beag

Fully expect us to top the group after last Saturdays performance. What odds Derry in a QF!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,404 ✭✭✭Goodluck2me

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,224 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

Off the top of my head, which could quite possibly be incorrect, I do not see why not. We could not meet Armagh in the present group stage because of the seedings for provincial winners and runners up, but we got Tyrone and could as easily have got Derry, So from here on out, if as hopefully we top our group, our next game will be a quarter final where the only teams we cannot meet would be the other three stage winners.

Agreed, I don’t think there’s any separation at QF anymore, tbh I think it would have been worth keeping the provincial finalists apart like the old system and ensure some different games

Really feels like we are progressing with every week. If we can top the group/have the flexibility to not worry about the last game and really look ahead, you just have to be excited of the potential for what we can do that hasn’t been there since Jim’s time, or maybe bonners first year when we steamrolled Ulster

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,224 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

I would prefer keeping the provincial finalists apart at QF as well, but with the aim nowadays of the powers that be to kill off the provincials that was never going to happen.

There were signs of possible green shoots towards the end of the championship last year to give some hope, but with the draw for Ulster, winning it did not fill me with hope. First day out was 2014 all over again. Dismantling Derry at home like we did to Dublin and going on to win Ulster on probably the most diffucult route we have every win it from. I have never doubted Jim Mc Guinness as to what he can do for a team from the day he was appointed U21 manager, but for me what he has achieved for us this year is so far beyond anything I could have even hoped. And he is still building a squad where those coming off the bench just gets stronger with each game.

After the Tyrone game last weekend and how we played it looks as anything is possible this year, but for me from where we have come to hopefully toping our group and straight into the QF,s would leave me one very happy supporter with no regrets no matter how the chips may fall afterwards. We are well back on the road with a squad I have no doubts that have an All Ireland within them, and all thanks to a manager who just never fails to impress.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,364 ✭✭✭henke

Agree on the QF. I am not sure why they changed it from the old provincial rotation system from semis to an on open draw with no repeat pairings. It was in play during the super 8s and could have remained in play with the winner of each group taking the provincial champions route. The current system could theoretically lend itself to a Dublin/Kerry final every single year as they are unlikely to a repeat pairing come semi (happened last year). At least with the rotational system once every 3 years was guaranteed not be that final.

On Donegal I think everyone knew there would be an uptick but I don't many seen this rapid of progress. It's been amazing to witness. There was something different about last week. The performance and the way they left the pitch. Whose to say how far they will go and they may or may not fall short this year but I'm certain Jim came back for one reason and one reason only and it wasn't Ulster, as good and all as it is.

When he returned the realism in me said he is unlikely to pull it off again and he may not but the more I see I fancy them to go damn close within the next 3/4 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Don't want to be looking ahead but even making a semi final is something we haven't done in 10 years even with the Ulster titles won under Bonner. If we top the group fully expect to get Derry or Armagh in a QF.

Let's see how Saturday pans out first. Brian McEniff has a great piece in the Democrat (it's online). No bitterness about a league game in 1990 at all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,404 ✭✭✭Goodluck2me

“The trip to Cork also brings back memories of the time they blackguarded us in 1990 with the field unplayable and us with over 1,000 supporters down. I heard afterwards that they were never going to play that game because they were only back from a two week holiday on the Friday as All-Ireland champions and one of the squad got married on the Saturday.”

    😁

So much for gaago. Game not being televised is a balls. Yet Cavan v Dublin is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,364 ✭✭✭henke

It is farcical really. For one no one cares about Dublin and Cavan it won't be competitive. Secondly, Donegal to Cork is the longest round trip in the country. Potentially good game with more neutral interest. Difficult for fans to attend and especially with kids. Accommodation expensive and a 10 hour round trip would be tough even without bringing kids.

Maybe due to Dublin's population they sold more subscriptions there and want to appease them.

if you have a dodgy box or stick it'll be on that, most pubs have them now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,364 ✭✭✭henke

It won't be. You will get gaago streams on a dodgy box when they are actually on gaago but when it's live nowhere it won't be on anywhere unfortunately.

When the Saturday/Sunday game are able to show the highlights, there is obviously cameras setup in the grounds. It mystifies me why they don't show more games live, even if they have to spread them to GAAGO, SKY, TG4, Youtube channels and TV3. It would promote the games a bit more as well if people could see more of their county's games televised.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,949 ✭✭✭Charles Babbage

It is particularly strange when there is a lot of interest in Donegal this year and thousands of people would pay to watch it. Given the distance involved and the outrageous price of accommodation, some people who were in Celtic Park and Clones may not be able to go to this one, why not give them an option?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭ghostfacekilla

I suspect that the decisions on the majority of what games that were to be shown especially in the league was done before Jimmy was announced as manager. That coupled with our division 2 status handicapped our airtime I'd say. Next year, we'll be considered box office to those who decide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

I think I read excuses/explanations why RTE/GAAGO can only cover a certain number of games before.

It's great that we have something else to give out other than the football about these days!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,949 ✭✭✭Charles Babbage

The groups were only selected a month ago and any choice of games occurred after that.

They need to get their story straight. One day they say that GAAGo covers more games than can ever to be on TV and the next day they decide to restrict the number of games they cover, while covering some walkover games and not covering one that will be competitive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,099 ✭✭✭babybuilder

Good win for Cork. Concede three goals and you'll not win. Too quick a turnaround for these lads. Porous defence against a physical Cork side. Pundits predicted that we'd be tested by non-ulster opposition. Ulster provincial seems nearly pointless in this new format. Beat Clare now and hope that Tyrone beat cork to top the group.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭ghostfacekilla

Not taking our goal chances eventually bit us in the behind today. Great work to reduce the deficit but can't help feeling we left that one behind us. Ridiculous amount of turnovers today. It reminds me of how Mayo loved to use their strength to bully us off the ball. More gym time required after the championship finishes up. Well done to McBrearty who stepped up enormously and the contribution from Moore to the scoreboard. Hopefully Jason McGee is recovered for Clare and best of luck to the Donegal teams playing in Comortas Peil na Gaeltachta.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,169 ✭✭✭downthemiddle

Very disappointing display today. Our decision making was extremely poor. The number of turnovers was staggering. Cork caught us with the same kick out time after time. The three goals came from our mistakes. We still put ourselves in a position to get a result only to kick the ball away twice.
Credit to Paddy and Caolan. They nearly dragged us over the line.
We will regroup from this and we won’t be as sloppy again. I would expect a big response the next day out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,099 ✭✭✭babybuilder

We never do well against a stronger physical team that gets stuck in. However, I think the exertions of the last month are bound to have an effect when one considers the style of play adopted by the team. Cork ambushed us today. Also, we have to remember that we came through two close games that could have gone either way. A wake up call to the supporters who are looking at the QF or SF at this point.

I’m still trying to make sense of that performance. When we were set defensively we coped comfortably with the Cork attack. The nine points conceded is testament to that. However when our attack broke down we were wide open and could have conceded three more goals.
There were times going forward when we had fourteen players inside the Cork 45. Space was at a premium and we consistently turned the ball over in the centre of the pitch by failing to beat the tackle. This left nobody home and Cork broke at pace exploiting the acres of space in front of our goal. Too often our defence was chasing back facing our own goal , a recipe for disaster.
We have four main ball carriers on the team. McGonagle was excellent, the others really struggled to impact the game and one had a stinker. Despite all our issues we forced ourselves back into contention. With a couple of minutes to go we had an easy point chance but tried to force a goal, a very poor decision. We then had the call that went against McGonagle for overcarrying. In the context of what had gone before this appeared to be extremely harsh. It led directly to Cork taking the lead and decided the game.
We will learn a lot from this performance. The mistakes we made won’t be repeated. We knew we weren’t the finished article yet. This is, however, a test of where Jim has brought this team. In the past this group of players did not respond well to adversity. There is no option but to respond now. Lose to Clare and our season is over. Win and we could top the group.
The fortnight break gives us the opportunity to regroup. There will be plenty of twists and turns before our championship ends.
