    Hi,

I'm not looking for lists, but your favourite racing titles from the 16bit generation.

This comes up because I was looking for a decent F1 game on the MD, aside from Virtua Racing, and I came across Nigel Mansell on the system, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Feels like Top Gear X Formula 1!

And I like the polygonal track scenery and the inclines in the track

    How about you all?

What whets your racing whistle on the 16bit systems?

Not straight up racing, but I grew up with Road Rash II so that always hits me in the nostalgia feels when I stick it on for a bash. Got lots and lots of play time that one.

Also like most other Megadrive owners back in the day, I had Mega Games 3 which had Super Monaco GP. Probably pants now, I haven't played it in years but it sure did get a lot of play time back then too.

Interestingly, I didn't play Mario Kart when it came out, not even once. Had some relatives with Super Nintendos but for whatever reason, nobody bought it. Didn't play it for the first time till emulators in the very late 90s/early 2000s

Domarks F1 games on the megadrive are similar but also quite better.

    You looking for realistic racers?

    F-Zero on the Super Nintendo.

Formula 1 Grand Prix by Geoff Crammond on the Amiga felt as realistic as it got in early 90's, not sure how it has aged but great memories of it.

Anything, whatever floated boats back in the day or even now.

I can play them all via emulation but I'll probably pick suggested ones up and they don't appear to be expensive to collect.

Stunt Car Racer by the aforementioned Geoff Crammond was my favourite 16 bit car game (racer might be pushing it with only one opponent). It was a work of art on 8 bit too.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Lotus II and III on the Amiga, still play them to this day.

Rock N' Roll Racing. Loads of fun and great soundtrack!

Super Skidmarks on the Amiga, cracker of a game. Unsure if Super Skidmarks 2 was released on the 16bit Amiga, there was a caravan version of that one. A series of games well worth a look

True, it possibly shouldn't have worked on 8 bit machines but played it on the C64 at the time and was great game, tried to play it again recently and didn't realise how difficult it was!

I played it on the Spectrum 48k!

And it was surprisingly good there

Another Vote for Rock N Roll racing , loved that game. Mario Kart as well on the Super Nintendo.

    James, slams into first!

Agreed great game. Never played the MD version, so can only vouch for the Snes version. The MSU1 version is amazing, but the original is king.

on the nigel mansells game above ,i have the snes version and its a lot different more like super monaco gp than what is above. still an ok game but i thinkid prefer the md version

micro machines 2 with the F U to Sega and the extra ports on top of the cartridge.

Super Hang-on. Street Racer was fun too.

Have fond memories of Revs on the BBC MICRO when back in secondary school.

It was the only game we had on it, and there was a daily battle during lunch breaks to try to beat the record time for a lap.

I proudly held it for a few days. Ah, good times.

I assume there's at least one good 16bit port of OutRun.

surprisingly.. not really. The Saturn one was the best I played but that’s 32 bit.

Another for Micro Machines 2. Spent so much renting it from Xtra vision that we would have been better off buying the game

Not exactly 16 bit, but from that Era (1993)… World Rally in the Arcade was always strangely compelling to me. Sort of a proto-sega rally in Isometric 3D. I remember the sound being deafening on it in the Arcade. Surprisingly I can't find a home port of it, although I do see it is on the Evercade Gaelco Arcade 1 cartridge. Which I am going to pop into my amazon basket now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,826 ✭✭✭Inviere

Love that game, I remember playing it in a few different arcades. Still enjoy the odd blast of it these days through MAME.

Was the PC Engine port of Outrun up to much?

In terms of the thread itself, did Chase HQ ever get a near arcade console port? I know there was a few ports to various Micros, and maybe 8bit...but 16bit ports aren't springing to mind.

Lotus and Buggy Boy on the Amiga, Top Gear, Rock n Roll Racing, Mario Kart and F-Zero on the Snes, Road Rash and Super Hang On on the Megadrive are all superb games.

Another vote for road rash 2 on MD, and a slight variation with a nod to super monaco 2 (ayrton senna's)

I think the saturn port was pretty close or arcade perfect.

Pc engine version was bad, Saturn and ps2 where pretty good IIRC ps2 was perfect

Apparently the team behind the Space Harrier and After Burner 32x ports were also due to make an Outrun port.

    What could have been, eh?

True, in both the case of Outrun and the Japanese only port of Chase HQ… (I found PC Engine versions of both to be fairly poor).

The saturn ports seems to be a double pack with the sequel SCI.

… the universe is a strange place. After I posted this I saw a slightly rough albeit cheap, practically give away jamma cab for sale nearby on Adverts. With a fully working driving game. Later on the seller put up a picture of the game…Some of you who follow Adverts probably saw it.

And here it is in my kids playroom until I find a better home for it somewhere. Admittedly in rather less portable format than the evercade exp version I was about to order

    I can’t believe that.

… this thing is so simple and addictive. Now I have to figure out how to tidy up the cab, pick up some fresh silver edging bits or whatever they are called. Maybe even find some world rally vinyls and decals if that is even possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,826 ✭✭✭Inviere

You think that'll be it then? Cabs like you to spend time on them, lots of time....soon you'll be wondering about upgrading the controls, servicing the chassis, replacing the power supply with a modern one, replacing the speaker, fixing this, fixing that....and then the big one, hmm, what other games could I run on this thing....

Before you know it you're old, broke, and you've got three cabs smiling at you while you're wondering where to fit the fourth one (because obviously an odd number is just wrong...)

Quintessential 'playing videogames in a chipper/pub my parents brought me to' cabinet that!

Nicely done. I'd be torn between leaving it as it is and refreshing everything on it.

99 euro… owes me nothing. Maybe a small tidy just to make it not stand out in the room and listen to fewer complaints

Sure you'd barely get an empty JAMMA cabinet for 100 quid, let alone one with a working monitor and game PCB. T'was a bit of a steal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

… you know me… restraint, fiscal responsibility, impulse control, none of these are things that I am well known for.

Slippery slope. Maybe I tidy up the edging on it and follow O1s1n's advice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

…. although I am already searching jamma boards on adverts thinking.. I really should get a 2 player cheap board, just to test that all the controls work on the cabinet.

It seems only right that you test the player 2 controls. 😁

A Neo Geo 1 slot board would work great in that cabinet, could then start hoarding collecting MVS carts.

The J-Carts!!! 4-player console games in the mid 90s was literally the cutting edge of consoles at the time. I think we had a couple of versions of Micro Machines with the extra ports. Micro Machines Turbo tournament was the best, if I remember correctly.

I used to love Skitchin'. Like road rash on roller blades, hanging off the back of cars and battering your opponents.

The J-Carts were an amazing idea. You could even get up to 8 player games going in Micro Machines with two people sharing each control pad.

Only down size to them was the ability to freeze the game if someone got a bit too boisterous with a controller hooked up to the cartridge 😁

I quite liked Exhaust Heat 2 on the Snes and the Test Drive series on the MD.

Stunrunner on the Lynx was impressive, a style of game only seen in arcades and the likes of the ST and Amiga
