Good draft so far if you need defensive players.

Happy with that Chiefs pick, surprised the Bills allowed the trade though.

I'd say the LasVegas and Denver are fuming with Atlanta taking Penix.

With them and Minnesota needing a QB, and Minnesota already expected to take McCarthy there would be only Nix left when it came around to Denver at 11 and LV at 12.

So Denver had to take Nix even though he was said to be the lowest prospect of the top six QBs, and Las Vegas were left without any of the top six QBs.

    Chicago did well getting Oduze.

GM should be fired immediately, criminal waste of a pick

Oh, Falcons. Could have gone in for Lamar, instead are now paying similar money for Cousins and spending a top 10 pick on his replacement due to his age and injury.

Really like Morris but the whole thing is a mess.

Especially with Penix’s age, it’s not a green 21 year old that can benefit from sitting and learning the ropes of the NFL. Assuming Cousins plays out the contract, Penix will be in his late 20s when he’ll emerge as starter (all going well). He’s not a first round QB talent anyway imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,039 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

Cousins four year contract is strongly front-loaded that it will be easier for the Falcons to move on from Cousins following year 2 but otherwise Atlanta's pick of Penix at number 8 looks to me as the most idiotic waste of a round one pick that I can remember since I have been properly following the draft over the past decade and pissing off your expensive newly signed veteran QB without giving him a heads up tops it all off

From a team that could have had Lamar and Bill Belichick, theyve now made themselves a laughing stock with that pick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,099 ✭✭✭amacca

I agree its in all likelihood a bad decision but would I be totally in a minority of one here to say Id be apprehensive to have Bill Belichick as a head coach...

I just think his way of doing things increasingly wont fly and I dont see him as a guy that will change much from the blueprint that gave him success previously....imo he needs to have absolute power and thats something takes a while to establish...I think another NFL job now = failure unless he takes over the worst team in the league where they are almost grateful to him for just showing up, is given complete control, budget and 3 seasons to develop them....his way....hard to get that....+ players better not have any delusions of granduer etc

I wouldnt take BB as head coach if I was the owner of say the Chiefs, Bills etc. But for the falcons, with their god awful front office and god awful coaching, BB couldnt make it any worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,099 ✭✭✭amacca

In fairness I probably have to accept that point!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,155 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Falcons fan? If so you'd be happy at least Pitts and Bijan would get enough touches!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,896 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Well you obviously wouldn't have taken Andy Reid either after a couple of bad drafts and a 4-12 season.

As regards the Falcons, I believe it was Belichick and not Blank who pulled the plug on that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,155 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

If I were teams equivalent to the chiefs or bills record now, no I wouldnt. Why would I change when the team is either already proven, or almost there.

To be clear, I really rate BB the coach, obviously, crazy that that needs to be said as a pats fan, but there you go. I just also believe you don't change a winning setup. The only reason bill is gone is because he had no winning setup anymore. For multiple seasons. So it was time for both the club and the manager/gm/coach to move on.

In Andy Reid's case, he had a few close seasons, but really hit on it when he nailed the Smith and Mahomes setup. But even in philly, he was always there or thereabouts and the team went downhill after he left.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,156 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

BB has a fantastic resume but it is inextricably linked with Brady and it fell apart after Brady left.

No idea how a team could entrust a rookie QB to BB after what he did to Jones.

For a team rebuilding with a QB, last time he had cap space to spend he absolutely squandered it.

For any other team, The Patriot/BB Way hasn't worked anywhere when Brady wasn't the QB and BB had plenty of opportunity to bring in fresh ideas into his set-up over the last few years but instead chose rethread after rethread of his former coaches who had been fired elsewhere, former players, and his kids.

Cherry on top, is his age. How long will he be willing/able to coach. Turning down a shot at the young, collaborative guys for a guy who might throw in the towel at any point.

Understand why his name and record would entice certain owners to sign up but in no way surprised that he struggled this year.

His last season in Philly was a 4-12. His last two drafts outside of Jason Kelce in the sixth round were dreadful.

If you checked my posts back then I still said he was the second best coach in the league. I'd have hired him but based on the previous post I quoted of yours you would not have hired him.

That was more or less my thinking…albeit put much more eloquently etc

Nope...Im that most detestable type of sports fan....I enjoy the game but have no particular strong loyalty to any team....ill root for an underdog or favourite if I like the way they play most of the time...I find it hard to have undying loyalty to any team I have no real connection to...I probably should support either the rams or the chargers given I lived there and I did enjoy the rams under mcvay when goff was QB (particularly when they played in the coliseum) they played some very enjoyable high score games during that period, this season Ive enjoyed watching Detroit, the Dolphins some of the Eagles games etc ....I just dont seem to have that die hard supporter in me....Ill also tune in to watch a game with a particular QB or TE or wide receiver or defensive players either I think are going to have an outstanding game etc

In soccer it translates to me being an outcast most of the time as people label me a bandwagoner....liking AC Milan in the 90s, Arsenal in the invincibles double season, the real madrid of fat ronaldo, guti, raul, roberto carlos, zidane, figo etc etc....just cant bring myself to truly support any club I have no real connection to but I can enjoy a team that plays an exciting brand of football..so I suppose most sports are an entertainment product for me without the added dimension of any real "brand" loyalty ..I can however have teams I dont want to see win....(eg: Man City in soccer at the moment...possibly the Chiefs even though I would have thoroughly enjoyed watching them destroy teams during the mahomes tyreek hill killer punch period they provided some entertainment but I never like any team getting too long at the top unless they are exceptionally entertaining) ...I can and do support Irish national teams Soccer, Rugby as I can find some justification for that even if it is a hard slog with irish mens national team currently!

So basically in sports fan terms I'm without a shadow of a doubt and by far and away a mostly reprehensible human being!

Anyway, definitely off topic at this stage.

In what’s essentially a first for them, Netflix have acquired worldwide* rights to the NFL’s Christmas Day games for the next three years.

(* As usual there will be local FTA broadcasts in participating teams home markets).

I have Netflix and prime but I don't like this at all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,156 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

More football that can be watched the better.

If they didn't have move these games on the new standalone dates then these would just be buried on a Sunday schedule, with most fans not being able to watch, as they weren't in their home market, or fans having to dish out way more on Sunday Ticket.

Ideally, they'd go to the networks but if they weren't willing/able to pony up then no issues with these going on streaming.

Interesting to see if Sky Sports still have rights to these 2 Christmas Day games, as they do for the Thursday night Amazon Prime package.

Also next season is the final year of the current NFL/Sky deal, which by all accounts is currently a freebie for Sky (with the quid quo pro being that they showcase/present the games as requested by the NFL).

Some crazy comments from Chiefs super kicker Harrison Butker.

Like obviously being anti-Biden is fine, and anti-abortion is a valid stance shared by many people. I disagree on both but can understand his viewpoint.

But having a pop at gay people, equating IVF with abortion as being things which 'stem from the pervasiveness of disorder', and telling the women at the graduation ceremony that their true fulfilment will be as wives/mothers/homemakers rather than using their just-gained qualifications to make a career - I'm not sure you could even call most of that hardcore religious stuff - its almost Handmaids Tale rhetoric.

Are internet forums much of a thing for the game in the states at all?

Cardinals fan here. I’ve subscribed to the local radio and podcast websites but can’t seem to find active forums at all be it Cardinals, NFC West or NFL in general.

Maybe it’s all gone to social media instead?

Here's one. Search for Arizona Cardinals message boards. There's a few more in the search results.

It probably varies a lot between different teams, but a lot of the SB nation team sites have very active discussion forums attached to each article. The Bears one is very active (some good posters and some complete muppets).

Revenge of the Birds is the Cardinals one, just looking at the post counts it seems a bit quieter than the NFC north ones.

The Vikings 4th round pick Khyree Jackson was killed in a car-crash last night.

    https://www.theguardian.com/sport/article/2024/jul/06/vikings-rookie-cornerback-khyree-jackson-killed-in-car-crash-at-age-0f-24

It appears the car he was in was hit by another car that made a dodgy overtake.
