Pension awarded, how long before I start getting it?

I applied for my contributory pension on my 66th birthday (March 10th 2024) and today I have received the notice from mywelfare that it's been awarded ("You are due this pension since March 10th 2024").

My questions are: 1) when I will start receiving my weekly payment and 2) Will they pay the arrears too since March 10th???

If you had applied for it three months before you 66th birthday, as they advise, you'd have got it in the week of your birthday!

You should get your first week's payment either tomorrow (if they had time to process it) or next Friday.

Pension arrears can be paid for up to 6 months, and you should get the back payments owed to you within the next two or three weeks, depending on the volume of work in the arrears section.

Don't forget that it's a taxable payment and Social Welfare will be advising Revenue that they're paying it to you.

Not being smart but why ask those questions here?

I suggest you get an email address or phone number from mywelfare and contact them directly.

They sent a 5 pages pdf with all details, payment breakdown, how to claim their decision etc. etc. but not when the payment will start or if I will get the arrears. Any questions, they provide a phone number, which would be annoying to go through.

Being this a sub-forum dedicated to pensions, I would expect many users have been through this and a quick answer would help. Isn't this what forums are for. 🙄

Thanks StormForce13! They mention that I 'may be liable' to tax but I have to do nothing for the tax to be paid. The Revenue will contact me. I suppose there is a threshold under which the pension is tax-free.

If you are interested in accurate information about your situation then you need to use the phone number you have been provided. If you only want random opinions from people who may or may not have any experience of a similar situation (you have not way of knowing) then yes the internet is the place to go.

As with @Henry Ford III, it is beyond me why some people choose to ignore the obvious and accurate source of information for their situation.

What will happen is that Revenue will reduce your annual tax credits to take account of your State Contributory Pension.

So, if say you were getting a pension of €8,000 this year, they'd reduce your credits by €1,600, being 20% of €8,000.

No, there is no tax-free pension threshold.

For people over 66, there are income tax exemptions of 18k single / 36k married.
