Recycling rip off

Today I bought a 500ml of Coke in Supermacs Loughrea, €2.20 which is higher than most outlets but with refund scheme in place since Feb 1st 2024, I presumed that I was doing the right thing for the world and getting money back for my efforts. Turns out Mr McD is buying the Coke in Poland, Polish lables that I cant understand, obviously by passing the Irish recycling charges by doing so but still charging end user the recycling fee which we cannot get back. Almost 4 months selling Coke since the new scheme came in, surely the old stock has been used up by now.

Issue also with retail products being sold in this country with ingredients etc in a foriegn language.

Any idea who is responsible for checking out if this is a con job please?

Have you tried putting the can in an RVM ?

You can also check the barcode on the Re-turn website.

Those cans may be sold until June 1st but you shouldn't be charged the deposit if it can't be got back.

Goods are in free movement in the EU.

Restaurants are exempt for the charge

€2.20 excl deposit is the norm for 500ml coke these days. €2.45 in my local Centra + 15c = €2.60

If a deposit is charged, it is detailed as a separate charge on your receipt and the display price will have "+15c" deposit.

From tomorrow all drinks bottles and cans will have to be DRS compliant no matter where they come from.

Restaurants are not exactly exempt they have separate rules.

Restaurants have to either charge the charge or retain the containers. If you bring in Polish coke you need to register the barcode as an international barcode and put logo stickers on the can.
