Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I would love to go for this and if something comes to pass, that I wish I had someone to talk to about, I would have some excellent experience in applying for it but right now I think I would struggle to pass, shame it is not a year out.

My experience in applying now and answering the questions would be from several years ago - really in two minds about even trying for it right now or just go for it and get the experience of it. As said above everyone is a guinea pig on this as a new application process.

What have you got to lose? I am applying for it even though I'm not sure I'd accept it if I was successful. It really depends on the Department and my circumstances at the time.

Get an application in, worst case you get to see the interview style etc and it can make your next application stronger when you feel you have better examples etc :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 16 Christmaschris

Does anyone have any advice for what competencies to choose for the application? Or how they should be layed out etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 85 ✭✭hungerjames

Watch the Vimeo linked in the original post, because the metrics they are using are different to previous competitions and they go into a good amount of detail. You can see the breakdown of each area here: https://www.publicjobs.ie/en/information-hub/capability-framework/higher-executive-officer

Generally speaking each example should follow the STAR format but with more of a focus on how you went about the task, and why, rather than giving up most of the wordcount to describing the problem itself.

I'm quite happy to go over the examples you're considering with you if you DM.

I wrote mine out as an essay styles with points starting as situation, task, action and results except for the overviews of leadership this is a few bullet point's covering each key word in the competency. It's actually really difficult to coherently fill it out under the word count as it counts spaces as a character.

How many point do you need to hit in your application to get shortlisted anybody know?

  • Registered Users Posts: 508 ✭✭✭gestappo

I need focus on getting this application started this weekend. I haven't had a chance to look at the application since it was released or give it much thought. There is quite a lot of effort involved, so I need to get back into the 'headspace' of it all 🧐

There's an internal HEO coming out in my Dept too so that'll be two ongoing applications

Have many of you submitted the form?

I'm in the same boat. I was hoping to get some guidance from my AP but it's hard to get the time.

Is there a time frame for how long HEO comps take? I assume we're talking a month or so for each stage to complete and move to the next one

  • Registered Users Posts: 85 ✭✭hungerjames

I was a single digit placement candidate in 2022 and the campaign launched at a similar time of year. I had a first week of September start date.

When filling in the application form do you adhere to the word count or does it matter if you don't match it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,553 ✭✭✭jaffa20

It's a limit from my understanding. It will prevent you from entering more text.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 D3BAS3R13

the application is pretty lengthy.. do you reckon they want you to hit the word count in the questions or am I over thinking it.. lol

Im about 50 characters off, it hards to get it perfect when they count letters and spaces

  • Registered Users Posts: 29 The_Taxman

Are you going into specific examples I.e STAR for the competency questions on the form or giving an overview of your experience and role?

  • Registered Users Posts: 23 prin2023

Surely it doesnt need to be 2500?

  • Registered Users Posts: 29 The_Taxman

2500 characters is not that much at all. Words would be a different story

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 408 ✭✭skidmarkoner

I'm breaking it down by background, actions and results. Working STAR into each answer

Quick Question: For question 2 where you fill in details of your experience in the civil service, is it just a line like they have quoted or do you talk about your experience? There are a ton of characters for this part but I've already talked about the roles in the employment history part.

  • Registered Users Posts: 50 ✭✭shardor18

I just listed the different areas I've worked as they demonstrated. I'm guessing alot of people might have been in lots of different depts hence the extra space.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 dublindoyle2023

Quick question, i have filled out all my past job history. The question refering do you have 2 years experience i just put down my most recent dept i have been in 3 years as that makes me eligible.

My other job roles were HSE, DEASP dating back 15 years unsure whether to waste my time as they were 9 months temp here and there and its already noted in my job history

  • Registered Users Posts: 50 ✭✭shardor18

I would only put any previous civil service roles so the HSE wouldn't be relevant but the DSP would.

  • Registered Users Posts: 508 ✭✭✭gestappo

I got a text yesterday from publicjobs, it brought back memories of the EO comp and anxiously waiting for the texts to come in 🤣

I opened the application last night. There was a question about whether you had at least two years service. To answer you had to pick from a drop down that had at least two years in Civil service, two years public service or if you selected no you would be eligible.

That makes me think length of service in the public service is counted.

Hello! I can't find the competition on public jobs - not sure what I'm doing wrong - can someone help? Thanks!

anybody else having trouble with Question 5 Strategic awareness and change. I’m struggling to think of example. Embarrassed to even say I don’t get what it means.

think it’s time to open a bottle of wine and leave this until tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,692 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Filled out everything but the questions - need to really ponder a good answer to them.

Does anyone think they will eliminate applications based on the application - they say they will shortlist from the applications. I know there is a massive shortage of CO and EO but don't know about HEO

    Hi all,

I can't find the candidate information booklet for this competition. Can anyone help? Thanks,

  • Registered Users Posts: 508 ✭✭✭gestappo

I’ll be working on my application today. I had a look over the questions the other day, but I don’t remember that’ being asked 🙈

  • Registered Users Posts: 2 JobJourney

Thanks for getting back to me. With any previous competition I've applied for, the candidate booklet was attached to the job advert, which I can't see here -https://www.publicjobs.ie/en/?option=com_jobsearch&view=jobdetails&cid=189011&campaignId=24231106&Itemid=263

Is the circular intended to function as the Candidate Booklet, or is there a separate booklet I should have access to?

  • Registered Users Posts: 508 ✭✭✭gestappo

There's no separate booklet, this is all that's referenced in the application form too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 508 ✭✭✭gestappo

How are you all getting on with the application form?

I'm at it hours now, and I've only gotten to the main questions 😞

So I'm guessing questions 3, 4 & 5 will mainly be used for the shortlisting? Or would previous work/education history come into it?

I finished my application on Friday because I didn't want to be dreading it all weekend. I was waffling away and ran out of space for the last question so had to edit myself down. Not long an EO but if you're not in you can't win.

I asked that question and was told it doesn't count.

  • Registered Users Posts: 937 ✭✭✭furrybones

That was clever. I'm down to the 3 dreaded questions. At least it's only 2500-3000 characters, I initially read it as WORDS! 🤣

2500 characters and if you go type 2500 then go add some to the middle it deletes off the end so be careful

  • Registered Users Posts: 508 ✭✭✭gestappo

I have read this and think it means you can only apply if you have served 2 years at the grade below HEO.

This is the first time I saw this is on HEO application it was normally open to all grades.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭MaryKaye79

there’s very little space for work experience responsibilities and achievements compared to previous forms. Only 800 characters is crazy

    Hi all,

Are you all using the STAR method to answer questions 3, 4 & 5.

I did mine in both STAR and using the sub categories as headings , I felt it read better that way but I know it's not the usual way. Any help or suggestions appreciated

  • Registered Users Posts: 59 ✭✭JacenSolo

Same here. Maybe its just me but unless your role is highly specialised I cannot see how many COs or EOs can answer this. Most of us aren't either given an opportunity to develop this or to implement it. I'm taking that they said implementing change to mean a change from on high that we then put into practice the problem being that we'd rarely have any say… we're how to implement that change.

Has anyone who has completed the application forms been sent the tests yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,692 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Won't happen until after the competition closes

  • Registered Users Posts: 508 ✭✭✭gestappo

everyone who is eligible will be notified about the testing stage and will have the same open window as each other. They won’t stagger it.
