An increasingly large amount of our laws are coming from the EU. The European Parliament has an increasing role in deciding those laws. The strongest parties in Europe shape the committees and choose the people who lead policy making on different issues. Fine Gael happens to be part of the largest European party and as such, its MEPs have an advantage in terms of potentially having greater influence. If you actually want Ireland to have influence in Europe voting for one of the established parties makes sense, even if you would never vote for them in a General or Local election.

What makes zero sense is voting for independents in European elections. Not to say that some of our Independent candidates arent highly skilled, but most start at a significant disadvantage in terms of influence.

A two foot long voting paper with only one candidate for each main party. We need experienced people who know how to 'work the system' at EU level. No point in electing people without the contacts to get things done. It is not just a matter of turning up at meetings and voting. I know from a long serving EU Civil Servant how the system works and what makes a good MEP for Ireland. Sometimes you have to hold your nose for the benefit of the country.
