Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

But it wasn't initially. They eventually put it on much late in the day.

I and others were watching it on eurovisionsport when I message popped up to redirect us to the RTE player - which is what I did.

What's notable is how much talent is coming through at 400m now. In addition to the latest batch of NCAA talent there's an 18 year old Czech athlete running strong times for her age, she's at the Europeans and is an outside shot for a medal. There's definitely a window for Adeleke to win a European gold and an Olympic medal this summer, but it doesn't look like getting any easier for her in future years, especially if McLaughlin and Bol turn their attention back to the 400 flat at any point.

I was watching the RTE player for an hour before the race? I just opened the RTE player and clicked on the box. It was mainly a panel talking about the mornings runs and highlights from earlier but it was available and the stream was clean.

Its on RTE2 tonight from 18.45

Where are you right now? 😉

To be fair, there's a good turnout every evening, but that's largely because they sell evening only tickets and most of the finals are in the evenings. There was a good turnout this morning, in the southern end of the stadium, but that was pretty much entirely to see Tamberi. Gotta say it's pretty emotional hearing the crowds belting out the Italian national anthem even in a half-empty stadium. Much better than Amhrán na bhFiann. The local support id a huge boost for the Italian athletes and it's showing in their medal tally.

The anti-RTE moaners are always quick to pile on.

While I agree it was a poor decision to be Player-only for an event where we had a strong chance of a medal, at least RTE had flagged in advance that Fri night would be streaming only (people were complaining about it - quite rightly - before the games even started).

The BBC seem to be screening the games entirely on iPlayer and Red Button, so also beyond the standard BBC 1-4 offerings.

That's the way broadcasting is these days - and pretty much everyone has the internet and a compatible device, so it's not like it was unavailable.

And while RTE Player still needs investment and improvement, it does seem to be better than it used to be.

Well done to the athletes, and to the RTE commentary team on the ground there, who are doing a good job under difficult and I am sure quite penny-pinching circumstances.

they probably should have spilt screen during the rugby match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,499 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

It’s quite possible that the rugby tournament has legal broadcast requirements attached to the rights - this is a feature of Champions League football broadcast rights for example. You can’t modify the feed. Not sure that IS the case for what is a relatively minor rugby tournament but I wouldn’t be surprised.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,236 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Yes, I suspect that is the case - if you're contracted to show X number of games, you must show all of the matches in full and cannot opt out of broadcasting one either (probably connected to sponsorship etc).

I've no idea why the 4 x 400 wasn't shown on the RTE News channel though - it may be that they seriously underestimated the level of public interest in it.

All three Irish athletes in the top 10 in the women's 400m semi finals. Becker narrowly misses the final but the team is looking seriously good for the relay in a few days time.

Dobson looked ridiculously easy winning that semi. Adeleke looked great in her semi and having two women in the final will be great.

    Dobson looks a talent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,191 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

Regarding RTE, do we need 3 talking heads in the studio? Just SHOW the damn athletics!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,716 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Can O’Donnell still qualify for Paris?

I was reading that max number athletes for 400 is 48. So surely across the globe they have 48 already?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,499 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

Well, they’re not just talking heads. They are former world class Irish athletes with plenty of expertise and nuance to add to the mix.

Would be better to see more of the field events rather than studio chat imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,499 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

I think we are seeing plenty of field events. There is loads of downtime and plenty of ways to cover the action. Plus there is the Eurovision feed (although vpn needed to bypass the RTE redirect).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,191 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

OK, but it's not for everyone. Definitely not for me. Plus, I don't know why they have to do it while live athletics is on in the stadium.

Think Sarah can medal. Runs really hard and good and maybe gold

    Stunning

    Ah brilliant. Delighted for her.

    Another gold...swoon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,236 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

At last! She's had such a long wait for a gold medal.

Is she the only Irish athlete to win medals at three different European Championships?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 837 ✭✭✭omicron

Gap between last golds, 26 years, gap between this gold: 2 days!

Fantastic, barging through the Brits made it even sweeter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,184 ✭✭✭Xander10

The Brits tried to block her in but she had the confidence to know she was good enough

    Brilliant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,202 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Brilliant! I'm so happy for Ciara after all she's been through. I was worried that she was being boxed in, but she found the gap and she powered to victory. We don't get European gold medals every day. Jerry Kiernan will be looking down, and nobody would be more proud of her. Bronze, silver and now gold. 🥇

I miss Jerry's contributions at these events.

wow that was so exciting - well done to Ciara, what a race she ran!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭breffni bogballer

We could end up with 4 golds by next weekend,W400 relays and individual W400

    100m final is over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,716 ✭✭✭✭walshb

You could see on Ciara’s face as she pushed through that she had lot more left than the other three. Two Brits were cooked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,191 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

Jeez, RTE didn't even show the 100m? I'm stunned.

Suppose they were making up for missing the first gold !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,191 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

By missing another one? I thought they'd like to see Asher-Smith, Rhasidat's training partner, winning gold. Maybe not…

Delighted for Ciara Mageean. Very nervous watching it as she was boxed for so long. No doubt once she broke free. A worthy champion. A word for Sarah Healy. She had a decent run in seventh. Hopefully lesson learned that she needs to stick her nose in there a little more.

All three 400m women were excellent. Adeleke qualified with ease and looked very composed. She will surely win a medal, hopefully gold but Kaczmarek will be tough. I was surprised at how nervous Mawdsley looked on the start line. She’s usually a relaxed character. Still job done and hopefully more to come. Fair play to Sophie Becker for really attacking it. 51.54 is a good time and only a few tenths off the final. She has improved so much this year and is an integral part of the relay.

Both Chris O’Donnell and Mark Smyth had creditable runs. I think O’Donnell in particular has a lot more to give this season.

Controversy in the women's 3,000m steeplechase, where winner Alice Finot has been disqualified for an "infringement of the inside border" - stepping over the inside border of the track, as she went over the water jump.

That seems ridiculously harsh. RTE could have covered this had they not been so quick to go off air. The news broke right as they went off air.

Their coverage has been a little bit shoddy, maybe I missed it, but I don't remember seeing the end of the men's hammer, the women's triple jump and the last 2 women in the high jump.

Lovely words from Sonia about Jerry.

Ciara was inspirational. I was worried about how she would deal with the tag of favourite. She showed great mental strength.

She's been reinstated now. Agreed on the field events... incredibly frustrating.

Brilliant from Ciara. What an inspiration she is. The way she runs, the way she speaks, she is someone all our aspiring athletes can look up to. This on top of the relay has been the greatest week in Irish athletics in decades and it's not over yet!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Well tonight lived lived up to the billing again. Obviously delighted for Mageean, overdue a senior gold medal and now she has it. An Olympic medal still an outside shot for her, but you'd never know.

The 400 went pretty much to form, Adeleke has a great lane draw and a real chance chance of gold tomorrow. Hard to see her finishing any lower down than second, she seems to have Klaver's number. Will be tough for Mawdsley to sneak a medal but encouraging to hear her say she was holding a bit back tonight.

The only slight disappointment tonight was Sarah Healy, she has plenty of time to learn of course but she never really got involved and probably should have finished a few places higher than seventh. Still a nagging doubt for now about her ability to perform in the championships unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,638 ✭✭✭Hamachi

Both Mawdsley and Adeleke have great lane draws for the final in 4 and 6 respectively. I think Mawdsley’s best chance of a medal is Klaver going kamikaze in the first 200m again. There’s a decent chance it will happen as both Adeleke and Kaczmarek are inside her. Fingers crossed for them both tomorrow.

    who’s on the women’s 4x400m for Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,306 ✭✭✭ariana`

Unbelievable to see 2 Irish gold medals. I let my youngest stay up last night to watch Ciara and I just loved watching it with him - I think my roaring at the TV may have helped the magnitude of it to sink in for him!

Aside from Ciara's race last night I watched a lot of it on the RTE Player app on my phone yesterday while out in the middle of nowhere, half-way to New York, visiting my teenage son during his stint in the Gaeltacht. I have to say I was very impressed with how the Player held up. No complaints from me, aside from the odd blip where coverage was patchy. It was nice to get home to watch on the big screen though 😄

  • Registered Users Posts: 663 ✭✭✭Fr D Maugire

On the watching thing, I prefer less analysis for the chance to see more athletics. On that note I started using the RTE player for the first time ever for the Relay. Did take me a bit to find the stream, but since them I have been watching a mix of RTE2 and the Player. The player uses the Eurovision feed I think, so can watch that when there is too much analysis and vice versa if I want to hear the chatter. Last night I had the TV on RTE2 with the Player on the computer so I didn't miss the 100m which was poor from RTE2. Haven't had any issues with player other than finding the stream sometimes.

Finally back home after an amazing week in Rome, three days of which was spent watching the athletics. Incredible experience to witness two Irish golds in person, properly emotional stuff! Very proud of what this small country is producing in athletics at the moment.

Very excited about the women's 400m tonight, imagine if we snagged two medals there?! Obviously hoping Adeleke can get the gold, but I've a feeling Kaczmarek might be too strong.
