Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Matts refusal to point any finger of blame in the direction of the man he championed to be the President of America for the current situation in Gaza and Israel is typical of the hypocrisy on The Last Word.

If Trump had won the election and he was President now, we would be getting slot after slot on The Last Word outlining how the Americans are complicit in what's going on.

But no, Matt and his team of lily liberals can't see that their hero is just as bad as that other clown.

Today I learned the Irish Defense Forces are a racist and sexist institution for not allowing men to have certain hairstyles such as a Mohawk and some other extreme styles

And white hetrosexual men are to blame, don’t forget that point.

Poor Roe McDermott, it must be tiring to be outraged all the time. 😔

  • Registered Users Posts: 79 ✭✭drserious4

She is infuriating. Matt has really let the show go, some of the guests are of very poor quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,156 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

    Roe is great.

Shes one of the great accidental comedians of our time.

I'm pretty sure she'll claim water is a sexist, racist, transphobic, patriachal demon very soon.

Is Matt still promoting his book, podcast etc?

If not I might tune back in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Maybe she should look closer to home before ranting non stop about men? Just saying......

He had ivan Yates on yesterday to talk about John Bruton. Both of them must have plugged their podcast 3 times.

"We will discuss in more detail on the podcast"

The Last Word has gone to s&*t.

Shadow of its former self. On life support. Needs put out of its misery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,676 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

Haven't listened to the show in over a year, after seeing a post saying McDermott is back I think I'll keep it that way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I heard Matt Cooper call Trump, "Dopey Donald Trump" twice today when chatting to Marian McKeown.

We know he hates Trump, but slightly embarrassing to hear a so called serious journalist getting personal about Trump just because he might have a chance of winning the election.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,460 ✭✭✭Tork

The irony is that by resorting to name-calling, Matt Cooper is sinking down to Trump's level. As far as I can tell, Trump is the one who started the trend of dishing out derogatory nicknames to his opponents. It's unbecoming of politicians and it's not a good look for a current affairs presenter. I'd say the same thing if he was going on about Sleepy Joe Biden or whatever the current slur de jour is. It's not hard to find biased political commentators on either side of the political divide if that's your bag. We don't need to add Matt Cooper to the list.

If Trump wins the next election, Matt would be wise to book himself in for regular medical checkups. Trump hysteria is not healthy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,270 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

If Trump wins the next election it will mean day after day of the same drivel from Copper on the last word. No need to prep for one of the 20 minute segments each day, just whine on and on about Trump. Money for jam really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,460 ✭✭✭Tork

Yes, but you're assuming humans will be able to hear him. Matt's voice goes up an octave or two when he gets agitated. If Trump is re-elected, he'll only be audible to dogs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭gym_imposter

He fully morphs into Ian Guider when fully of righteous indignation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,593 ✭✭✭djemba djemba

I was listening to matts podcast with Ivan Cooper. It's called path to power.

I liked Matt but gave up on the last word due to the 5 at 5 stuff and the other nonsense that is on the show, but the podcast is all the things I think matt does best.

I have only heard the latest two episodes but will give it more time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭fire_man

Ya podcast is decent except too much mention of his book!

Zara King was on covering for Matt on Friday again. Attrocious again. It's so much filler, especially all the cosy chats with Ben Finnegan who I think is pretty boring also. Persistently looking for voice notes from the public, if I wanted to hear the rubbish opinions of the public I'd listen to Liveline or Niall Boylan!! Talk to the contributors, let them have their say and move on.

I really hope she's not auditioning for the long term role as Matt's replacement. If she is I'll be moving over to Sarah McInerney.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭fire_man

Agree total rubbish it was.Only tuned in for sports after 6.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,947 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

Notwithstanding the fact that Zara King is a brutal presenter, you raise a valid point about the "cosy chats". I see it across most stations now, trying to make "personalities" out of the support staff. Be it AA roadwatch announcers, news anchors, they all seem to want their few mins of fame and to make a name for themselves. Who could blame them I suppose, but there's been an editorial decision somewhere to drive this. Find it very annoying, just do your job and move on would be my mantra.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,933 ✭✭✭kksaints

As much as people complain about Matt Cooper the quality of the Last Word noticeably drops when he isn't there. Ian Guider is probably best of the rest but he's still way off Matt. Zara King and Nathan Murphy are awful hosts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

It's pretty poor even with MC, a shadow of its former self.

Dunphy in his heyday was very good.I remember he was missing alot though at the time.

Yep Dunphy used to have more time off than RTE hosts. I remember around 2001, he was off air for about 6 months, was rumoured that he was in rehab

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,270 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

Roe McDermott was on the film slot yesterday and ended up talking about some Francis Ford Coppella produced film that seems to have run into a lot of problems (and these problems seemed to be music to Roes ears).

It ended with Roe telling us about an allegation that the producer tried to kiss some of the scantily clad extras.

She seems to be getting back on the #ibelieveher horse after being off it for a few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭sportsfan90

I don’t know anything about Roe, the only time I’ve ever encountered her is whenever she’s on the Week Trending slot. Every single time she’s on she repeatedly mentions the same things - misognyny, patriarchy, racism, homophobia etc.

I’m not for a second denying all those things exist and are a problem, but she shoehorns them in to every single topic even when you think it’s not possible. I can’t help but get the feeling that Roe would blame the wet spring we’ve had on the patriarchy aswell.

She wasn't so vocal when a certain close relative was in court for dodgy stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 453 ✭✭Shan Doras

It's a pity that nobody has ever uploaded old episodes from the Dunphy era online. 1997-2002, Dunphy's last word got a lot of younger listeners interested in politics,

Funny...Cal Thomas just bitch slapped MC.

And he was right. Marion McKeown spoke for a few minutes uninterrupted, as soon as Cal speaks, MC interrupts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,156 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

He throws that hissy fit nearly every week. Hes still incredibly sensitive about sweet Donnie but nowhere near as bad as he used to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,460 ✭✭✭Tork

I'm surprised Cal still comes onto the show despite the way he's treated. I don't share much common ground with him but I believe we still need to hear how your average Republican voter sees the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 542 ✭✭✭PhoneMain

In fairness to Cal, Matt is ridiculously quick to cut across him and Cal can criticise Trump, way more than Marion would criticise Biden.

Was listening to Paths to Power last week, Matt said that he detests vox pops and wont allow them. Funny then that Zara King encourages voice notes which are similiar enough to vox pops!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭fire_man

Heard that on podcast, Zara will not be impressed!

  • Registered Users Posts: 180 ✭✭Chun the Unavoidable

Cal and Matt are friends according to each of them, so he is probably just narky from old age and having to do the spot at the early time of the day for him (depending where in the states he is).

Cal can wax and wane with the best of them though on Trump, he will be one of Trumps defenders if he gets the WH as he was during the Trump presidency and then "both sides" the arse out of everything when Trump is doing something really outrageous that he cant defend.

  • Registered Users Posts: 59 ✭✭Conovski

I used to like MC, and his podcast with Yates is interesting, although there was some noticeable editing of a recent episode "immigration once again" to remove a very questionable assertion made. Originally dropped on 26 April, edited and reuploaded on 9 May. Video version removed from YouTube completely too

Cal is fine at giving opposing views and does appear to get on well enough with both Matt and Marian. He just has a blind spot for Trump that triggers him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

What was said? I think it's unfair for broadcasters to go back and edit things they say.

Stand by your convictions, don't edit yourself into everyone's good books.

Was it MC who said it? Wouldn't surprise me. Doesn't like to offend anyone these last few years, barely says anything controversial any more.

Lads, Matt is a gimp. And the show is a pale shadow of it's former self. Sin é.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 146 ✭✭dmn22

Am I the only one who can't stick Ian Guider's voice and his inability to pronounce his th's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,270 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

The Tech fella talks like a male Miriam O Callaghan. His voice gets higher at the end of each sentence.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭gym_imposter

Cal is a hack so makes sense he's friends with Cooper

Seriously though while he comes across as likeable enough, you never hear anything you don't expect to from Cal Thomas, he's your typical Israel loving one eyed conservative media hack who's no threat to anyone in power

    Just like Matt Cooper

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,526 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Paul McLoone was on the culture club today, a reminder of him and the eclectic music he played, but was also a decent segment with Matt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,270 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

    Thanks, I must listen back.

Paul was treated disgracefully by his former employers but I suppose it showed us the direction that Bauer was taking (and then they later "neutered" Ed Smyth as another poster put it).

Paul was very gracious, there was no bitter interview after but maybe that's cos his son still works for Todaym FM.

Paul has nothing to be gained from bitching about his former employers. As much as anything else, potential employers like people with a good attitude. I would be very surprised if Louise McSharry, who famously bitched about her departure from 2FM, ever gets another radio job.
