Classical music type presenters

    I enjoy light classical music and listen to Lyric FM. George Hamilton, Marty Whelan perhaps. I like the movie score show as well. Music of that nature. In fact I have often wondered about Marty Whelan's background in music. I recall him being a pop record type of presenter and he had a programme on TV along time ago. Interviewing the likes of Sade. What I particularly like is the extra snippet of information some presenters bring. George Hamilton always has background information about the composer. As does the movie score programme. I see that Simon Delaney now has a programme on Lyric on a Sunday. I think it includes some classical pieces as well as a lot of 'requests'. I am not too sure about Simon. I have never heard him talk about classical music before so I am unsure how much he knows about it. Would he himself choose the music on his programme?

    Michael McNamara and Lorcan Murray both moved from 2FM to Lyric FM back in 1999 when it first launched. Michael, in particular, moved between various genres in his radio career. In his earlier days on RTE Radio 2/2FM, he played a lot of "golden oldies". Then, in the early 1990s, he reinvented himself as a dance deejay, calling himself Mickey Mac! On Lyric FM, back as Michael, he did a classical countdown! Another of the early presenters on Lyric FM was Eamon Lawlor, who had been a newreader and reporter for RTE!

    I've been listening to Liz Nolan while working for over a decade and fell in love with her voice.

    For some mad reason I got it into my head that someone as knowledgeable about classical music and with such a soft sounding voice as hers had to be a big chubber in real life.

    It's only about two years ago I saw a picture of her for the first time, what a beauty!

    Alex James, bassist with Britpop band, used to present a few years ago on the British classical station Classic FM.

    Marty is great. His show can be a real tonic to the misery and anger of current affairs. It’s a light entertainment show and it covers its brief impeccably. There’s plenty of other slots available for the Rachmaninoff and Liszt stuff.

    A good few of my friends, and indeed myself, have him on the car for this very reason; for an hour or so he's a cheery and cheesy counter to the invariable feed of bad news on Morning Ireland and Newstalk or more more more pop on the other stations. I like him, and he will not be easy replaced when he has to go.

    they should go for an old RTE / ex-2FM name who is already a staffer, perhaps rick o'shea, lorcan murray or will leahy

    Christ almighty, we're already speculating on who might be the new 'king of the banter' on lyric.

    I don't really care who's presenting, but does it have to be another auld fella and does the music have to be so dreadful on this show in the mornings?

    Can we not have one just ONE radio service that just sticks to it's original remit - classical and specialist music (jazz, world etc)?

    What's with the ABBA, Steely Dan, Peter Sellers comedy, CMAT, the already overexposed f**kin Nevin Maguire, endless reading out of text's telling the presenter how great he is, "funny" Whatsapp messages?

    It's clear from the recent publicity campaign for Lyric, which features Marty Whelan exclusively, that the powers that be are embarrassed by the cultural content of the station and are now trying to chase audience.

    "Jesus, don't mention the Classical Music what ever you do!" seems to be the strategy.

    That is not the reason for the existence of Lyric. The guardians of Public Service Broadcasting let down PSB once again.

    The lack of editorial control of the music is nearly criminal.

    And those who love the "bants" with Marty would surely follow him to Gold, Classic Hits, Sunshine, Q102 etc - any of those are a more natural home for him and his music. They are not really lyric listeners.

    I was once flicking through stations while driving and settled on a Ritchie Hawton track. I was a little surprised when I looked at the dashboard and saw it was on Lyric.
