Presume all this gcn dust has settled by now. Mind me asking how lads are getting on 26th they're new D+ alternative? Is that the only show in town now pretty much?

Probably should sort myself out for coverage with the giro looming.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,991 ✭✭✭cletus

I took out a sub. Race event coverage is pretty much the same. No documentaries. Not sure if the pre race stuff GCN did for the grand tours will be a feature this year.

If you just want it for the racing, it's all there.

Regarding the documentaries, I was looking at the comments on one of the vids on their YouTube channel recently (I tell myself it's not the Journal) and they said they're actively looking for a home for all that content.

Real shame as I actually enjoyed watching all of the tours without the ads. But that was the only reason to sub, so hard to say if it made financial sense if a lot of subscriptions were only for that reason.

There is an ad-free option on Eurosport (I still have an old legacy subscription) so I imagine that will be the same for Discovery Plus

There is an ad-free option for any race I've watched live or on demand on the Discovery Plus app.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,288 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

I’ve had discovery for nearly three years now. All races are ad free. For the big races, Eurosport coverage is included (ie the breakaway, pre race etc)

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,047 ✭✭✭G1032

How do you get the ad free highlights? I get ad free live coverage but have to sit through ads on highlights

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,347 ✭✭✭Melodeon

The D+ coverage has been superb; two versions of pretty much everything as far as I can see.
The 'Eurosport' as-broadcast version (with ad breaks), and the full ad-free version.
The Highlights offerings are patchy though, it being seemingly random which race/stage gets a highlights package or not.

The highlights packages all appear to be as-broadcast on Eurosport, so they all contain ad breaks.

As far as I can see anyway.

And I don't recall the highlights having ad breaks with GCN+, but I could be misremembering that.

Its such a kick in the teeth for the makers of all those documentaries to just have them sitting on a shelf somewhere.

I used to love putting one of them on on the background. The GCN channel on YT recently had a video of Simon doing America's toughest gravel race. It has been viewed 163K times in just 4 days. And its just 16 minutes long.

Think that could easily have been 45-60 minutes of interesting content without massively increasing their costs to produce it which lots of people would still be happy to watch.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,446 ✭✭✭Macy0161

Not Highlights - I generally just watch the live coverage back (as eurosport "highlights" tend to be just the last half hour/ hour of a race anyway)

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,047 ✭✭✭G1032

Ah! Do that myself sometimes, generally to get the last half hour or so of a race

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,047 ✭✭✭G1032

They didn't. Definitely not. Used to have a 5min and 25min highlight option on GCN+, ad free

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,699 ✭✭✭omri

Subed for 1 month to D+ and boy isn't this a treat without the ads. Will do it again for TdF and Vuelta.

bah, Sky have finally noticed that I was still getting D+ despite having downgraded to the Essentials package, and have cut me off.

I've paid me 6.99 for the Giro, I assume there's no cheaper way of getting D+?

GCN is back in the hands of its founder but their website is to be shut down with “up to 20 layoffs”

Racing rights stay with WB, but the YouTube channel will continue under Play Network

EDIT: for some reason a link won’t post but google will find it for you!

Some tough news tied to this thread.

Cillian Kelly posted on Twitter today that he's finishing up with GCN. He mentioned in his tweet how he was heavily involved with GCN+ amongst other things and ended his post saying he's open for work.

Stating the obvious but that means he was let go and hasn't been able to find anything up to this point.

The former is obviously a direct consequence of the platform being shuttered.

The German GCN channel looks like it's dead - both presenters left to start their own channel, and no videos have been posted in the last two months.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,288 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

AFAIK Cillian left a non-cycling job which must have been a decision he didn’t take lightly. Hope he gets to work in a field he clearly loves

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭JMcL

Feck. Aside from his analytics role (which I assume ground to a halt when GCN+ was shot) his videos were generally very good

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,251 ✭✭✭CantGetNoSleep

Is it just me or is there less GCN content recently too? I have YouTube on the living room TV and I'd often turn it on and watch when I got a bit of free time but the last few times there seemed to be nothing worth watching

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,640 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

My immediate response was that I felt that the depth and variety of their content had scaled back dramatically. But this is a screen shot of their content of the last 2 weeks approximately.

Granted it has a 2 hour compilation in there of old videos but aside from that it doesn't look all that dissimilar to how it has looked over the last couple of years. Maybe more shorter videos, but there's still a good variety.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,640 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

There might be less and less going forward it seems.

Saw another tweet today from someone saying they are leaving GCN (behind the scenes staff member it looks like), also with nothing lined up. That led to a response from someone saying it has been sold back to the original owners and the website is getting the bullet.

It's still up but signs that its not going to last long. Several posts over a couple days a week ago, nothing since.

i watched a video yesterday, on the GCN tech channel, which was 5 months old.

interestingly, having read about the change of ownership, the line in the video 'if you like this video, please give it a thumbs up, we need it now more than ever' stood out.

Dan Benson has gotten let go as well, so that doesn't auger well ..

That comment (ollie if memory serves me) stood out for me too. When I heard that I thought oh they are under the pump now or being canned.
