    Origin:

from the name of Captain Charles C. Boycott (1832–97), an Irish land agent so treated in 1880, in an attempt instigated by the Irish Land League to get rents reduced.

These are things in the media recently that I've essentially been avoiding for years anyhow:

    Coke

    Pepsi

    McDs

    Starbucks

Recently found out a hummus brand I used to get is tied to a certain apartheid ethnostate. Not buying that anymore.

How about yourselves? There is huge, often untapped, power in mass Boycotting.

Try to avoid Nestle products, likewise I wouldn't knowingly buy anything of Israeli origin for the foreseeable & likely long term future. There are other brands I take a scunder against from time to time. Hit them in their pockets, that's what is understood ultimately.

Good call on Nestle. Hard to completely avoid them due to their omnipresence, but I do also make the effort to.

I stumbled on an app called Boycat. You can use it to scan the barcode of a product. Within seconds it will tell you if it's on any Boycott lists or not and you can decide if it aligns with your views and beliefs.

Wetherspoons, Tate & Lyle and almost all newspapers. I'd add JCB but I doubt I'll be getting anything from them any time soon.

I boycott boycotts through a combination of unfussiness, laziness and stinginess. Anybody called Boycott is dead to me.

We have a bin storage thing with pneumatic struts which hold the lid up. One of the pistons has failed and I can't replace the thing because the manufacturer is Israeli (keter).

Sodastream, nestle, all the toiletries that aren’t cruelty free.

Brexit but another poster has provided a much better reason.

If they tested dangerous toiletries on you, would you be dead or alive? Or a superposition of both until we looked in the box?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,962 ✭✭✭✭banie01

I remember a friend of my wife's once waxing lyrical about an aloe Vera supplement for dogs that was specifically "cruelty free" & "not tested on animals"

It took her quite a while to grasp that her using it for dogs pretty much amounted to animal testing then 🤷‍♂️

    **Edit**

As for what I'm boycotting, Sodastream are probably my most visible. I do have a Sodastream that I use regularly but my boycott revolves around not buying or using their gas or syrups. I have a Co2 fire extinguisher for gas and my main use is for sparkling water or fizzy MiWadi.

I still do a little consulting work for a Telco and by extension FSI here and unfortunately a lot of that revolves around Cellebrite and other Israeli tech that I have for years, been trying to get replaced.

The Cellebrite, Telco and FSI/Gardaí overlap is massive and followed me even after I left full time employment. The capability of Cellebrite gear for "police work" is built on years of Israeli actions in the occupied territories. The ability of the "government only" gear, to not only extract data, but to generate visual representation of contacts and volume of Comms, that can be fed back to a database of other downloaded phones and create absolutely mission critical FVT visualisation is incredible. I totally get what and why it's important but it's tech built on foundations of oppression & occupation.

I left my accredited trainer status lapse during COVID and fully embraced retirement, no regrets. My last taste of similar work was 2021, there are now at least a few alternatives to Cellebrite but, from what I hear from folk still in the industry? They are still the gold standard.

...I'm not sure who that boycott is having a more detrimental effect on

Starbucks, Nestlé (as much as I can), any Israeli linked product (just found out Sudocream is f*cking Israeli now!), Supermacs & Spotify.

They're either called for boycotts or my own personal boycott, which I know means f*CK all in the grand concept of things, but I feel a bit better knowing I'm not contributing to it.

Since the time of covid outbreak from China back in 2020 many countries had to go into lockdown the economic costs of lockdown and then the human costs of covid all the people that passed away due to covid some of us may of knew someone that passed away due to covid; but ever since then any clothes or electronics I check where to see it made and if made in China I refuse to buy I simply boycott; the economic and human cost of covid China has never compensated any country for not properly containing covid within its own borders at the very start that is one reason I refuse to buy chinese .

The last tv I had to get I got a samsung made in South Korea.

And then there is presenting the ongoing organized animal torture on Chinese telegram groups; I hate to have to post about it but this is just a glimpse of what I am talking about.

Between the human and economic cost of covid ' the ongoing organized animal torture videos on Chinese telegram and human rights issues I cannot in good conscience willfully buy or purchase Chinese goods or products.

You should look into stents that cardiologists use. Maybe you’d like us all to boycott them. Most are made in Israel 🇮🇱👍

I haven't spent a penny in Dunnes since the strike in 1984.

Lidl toilet tissue wipes since I noticed they were made in Israel a couple of years ago. They may have changed producer since but I haven't checked. I just get the Aldi ones which are British.

I have been boycotting the Irish media outlets like the Irish Times and the Irish Independent for the last few years.

I do read them from time to time, but I make sure to go through a proxy in order to deprive them of clicks and revenue.

Guiness to Guinness 0 to No alcohol at all, at least most of the time.

Guiness 0 reminded me how expensive going for a few beers is, what a pain in the hole it is getting home, how **** I feel the next day and how sick of drinking I am.

Thanks Guiness 0, I'm sure this is not the effect Guiness was hoping for.

Every single ingredient that goes into all toiletries, no matter who produces them, have been and must be tested on animals. This will continue until a suitable alternative is found.

to be fair, it's not as if i'm living a miserable existence because the lid of my bin storage thing doesn't always stay up!

Quite a few made in Limerick too, Cook medical are one of the largest stent suppliers in the world, cardiac, peripheral and drug infused. Granted asking your surgeon for a specific supplier at a time of extremis might seem odd but, alternatives are available.

    must be? i did a quick google and found this;

"In 2013 the European Union banned the sale and importation of cosmetics products newly tested on animals - or that contain any ingredients that have been tested."

In 2013 the European Union banned the sale and importation of cosmetics products newly tested on animals - or that contain any ingredients that have been tested.

Some exceptions are allowed, though - ingredients may still be tested on animals under certain circumstances,

Don't Abbot and Boston Scientific make them here in Ireland as well along with many other interesting life saving devices ?😁

According to the spiel from Bioinnovate Group in Galway 80% of said devices are produced in Ireland now .

Your first post stated every single ingredient must be (and you stated must be) tested, which is quite a remove from the post you quoted there. Which is it?

Toymaster - was looking for 2 beanbags for a santa present, went in ~3 weeks before Christmas and they said they'd have stock back in next week; strung me along for the next 3 weeks saying they'd be in in a couple of days. By the 22nd, had to go elsewhere to get them. Useless shower of c*nts

Supermacs: Can't support that tight baxtard who pays min wage and takes lunch out of the wages even if you don't eat their food. You've to pay for the uniform and while everyone was locked down he was fannying about on holidays with his family and recording it for everyone to see. Could do for Galway hurling what JP has allegedly done for Limerick hurling, but he's too tight and just wants his brand on the jersey. This extends to any Circle-K that has a Smacs on it because he owns them too. I don't use hotels and don't own/rent property so covered there.

The Beard Struggle: Previous douchey dudebro controversy aside, I do like the products. But their EU orders ship from the UK so until they get an EU based base, I no longer buy from them. On a side note, anyone recommend any decent beard products, preferably Irish produced!

Google: A hard one, as Google are everywhere, but they're no longer a search engine, they're an ad engine. So my boycott is by saying I'll "search" something instead of "Googling" it.

The nestle one is interesting. They own a lot so I reckon it's actually impossible to boycott them. I do like me a Lion bar, aside from shrinking they still taste the same as they always did, unlike most other bars which no longer do. Oh, yeah, let's add Tubs sweets to that mix, picked up a box of the chocolate white/pink mice. They're smooth, no grain like they used to, so they feel weird/waxy, and the taste is all wrong. Ate about 3 of each color and threw them away.

My boycotts are smaller than most…

Nestle products…. They are a grim company who don’t treat people very well….also they don’t treat consumers very well, Aero chocolate now vs when it was manufactured by Rowentrees is a great example…. Shrank the bars and changed the ingredients, everything from texture to flavour is beyond substandard now….

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 50,290 CMod ✭✭✭✭magicbastarder

Aero (and wispa) are genius bits of marketing. the whole point of them is they're selling you a bar that's half air.

McDonalds and Starbucks because of Israeli support.

tbh it's not very difficult since there's a lot of fine local chippers and cafes on every street in every town anyway.

If you REALLY care about boycotting companies that directly or indirectly support Israel you should be boycotting all tech corporations, even get off the internet and stop using computers altogether.

WTF is that a jihadi using click bait titles and alt right style youtube videos?! When I thought I saw them all…

  • Registered Users Posts: 735 ✭✭✭foxsake

seems like the statin meds are too I'm told. thankfully I've no need of any of them …. so I'm good.

But on a more serious note - I'm not sure boycotting all Israeli goods is right more the ones that contribute to the war machine -as I said specifically

but maybe I will .. . I'll need to consider..

  • Registered Users Posts: 685 ✭✭✭Housefree

    Everything on

    https://bdsmovement.net/get-involved/what-to-boycott

    &

Starbucks. Also Costa is owned by CocaCola so I boycott them. Soda stream is owned by Pepsi so all Pepsi products. All US fast food franchises McD's/Burger King/KFC/Domino's etc.

I will boycott anything & everything from Israel. The longer the US supports and arms the genocidal apartheid regime of Israel. The more US corporations I will boycott.

I will never again support any of these companies, even after the genocide/apartheid stops

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,211 ✭✭✭Cordell

It will be only fair to boycott everything from Palestine as well, but the only thing they export don't have the range to come all the way here.

I will boycott anything & everything from Israel.

You won't. You need to stop using computers and internet if you're really committed, but just by posting that you created income for tech companies who directly and indirectly fund Israel.

  • Registered Users Posts: 735 ✭✭✭foxsake

i didn't know that about supermacs - i kinda suspected something about him
