Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

You could be talking about England at any football tournament really! They're always unbalanced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

They need to use the width a bit more… Trippier on the left offers the illusion of width, in that he's taking up that position high up the pitch on the touchline, but every time he gets it he's just playing it back inside again. There's never a hint of him taking it on down the line. They'd nearly be better off having him sit a bit deeper, and have Foden shift a bit wider to open some more space.

Has Trent played much in midfield at club or international level? Seems like a crazy call from Southgate to do that for a major tournament.

  • This Guehi seems decent. Trent not good enough to be a CM

    Much better from Serbia

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,172 ✭✭✭Irish Aris

Could it be that it's not Trippier's natural position so the instructions are different? In any case, not having a natural LB kind of weakens this side completely. Big difference with having Walker behind Saka on the right side.

There's something in this for Serbia now. Getting into the game and I could see England getting nervous a bit. They're certainly not making the most of their strong squad.

Interesting that HT has meant the pendulum has swung towards Serbia.

    Will England adjust tactically?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Far too many England players getting a bit greedy and getting drawn to the ball, rather than holding the shape.

<edit> doing a bit better now, actually starting to work together

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Bellingham and Foden can't be in the team together. England making the same error of previous tournaments with Gerrard and Lampard.

should be a peno for Serbia. Stupid tackle from Trippier

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

I think they can - they just can't both have free roles to roam wherever they want all over the pitch. Feels like both get a bit bored of this thing of not progressing the ball quickly enough, and come looking for it.

We're not seeing Rice and trent get on the ball and play through midfield pressure, which would then open things up for Jude, Foden, and Saka. Someone like Saka should be pinning their fullback back - instead it's been the opposite.

that was one of those, you've seen them given. would be a foul else where i suspect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,576 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

This is such a boring game. All that attacking talent, and only 2 shots on target after an hour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Would have been a very soft penalty I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,716 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Little bit more composure and Serbia would be level here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

    England playing sufferball.

    Against Serbia.

    For 45 minutes.

    Southgate hasn't a fiddlers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,180 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Better first touch there and chances are Serbia would be level.

England might hold on and win but every manager will tell you that you don't sit back with a one goal lead. They are giving Serbia a great opportunity to get a goal.

  • Like watching Ireland in Italia 90 here with all the hoofs

the Bellingham love in would sicken you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

It's the last Euros final all over again, totally unnecessarily. Rice and Trent been really poor in midfield though, not fighting to win back the ball, not bossing the midfield, and not passing through pressure to open space. Both just kinda sitting back in formation and hanging out. They're so passive, instead of actively engaging.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

With England it's like they are just hoping one of their star players will just produce something to get the win, instead of playing well as a team and having a proper structure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,232 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

Apart from the goal England are dreadful.

Trying to combine watching the golf and England game……but the golf is better😀

Seems like England are struggling a bit?………how did TAA play?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,716 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

    Trent off

'It's working well' according to Shearer earlier (re: Rice), who was clearly watching a different game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

Knew that would be the move.

No system tweak, just replace Trent with a runner.

    Basic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

Pickford loving the fact he's getting to throw shapes every 2 minutes in launching these long balls.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,271 ✭✭✭Tandey

Palmer on for Foden would improve this team imo.

Its a manager problem. Both TAA and Rice had the ball plenty of times there tonight, looked up and no runners ahead of them so they turn around and pass the ball sideways or backwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Like to see Eze brought onto the left, and for the midfield to be told to act like midfielders instead of a second set of CBs just sitting there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,716 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

    Forgot Kane was playing

    Top save

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Great save - though Kane was climbing all over the defender, so not sure it would've stood anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,176 ✭✭✭Xander10

The Pace Cantley plays at , there will be time to catch loads of golf when this is finished

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

I'm absolutely baffled that this team, full of superstars from DM to CF, can't play through midfield, and instead, are just punting it to the CF.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,170 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Trent is a liability. Can't defend to play in a back 4 and has no positional sense to be a midfielder either. Hes just there for set pieces and maybe a long ball to launch a counter attack/beat a high line. Offers zero other benefit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,576 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

Look at the goal tallies from this season:

    Kane: 44 goals

    Foden: 27 goals

    Palmer: 27 goals

    Watkins 27 goals.

    Bellingham: 23 goals

    Saka: 20 goals

    Bowen: 20 goals

The team should be far more attacking than they are. Honestly, what is Southgate playing at? It's like they're playing with some bizarre handbrake on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,536 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Any worry I had of England winning his tournament are fast disappearing, so much talent and so useless

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,388 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Jesus Kane has had a shocker. Foden hasn't been far behind.

Bellingham off, a bit surprised with that one. Only one out there that has shown a bit of composure

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,978 ✭✭✭BenK

For all the talent England undoubtedly have, they don't have it in the managerial position. Hard to see a manager like Southgate ever winning a major tournament. A proper team won't fear England.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,600 ✭✭✭✭siblers

If Serbia had any bit of a threat up front they'd probably have equalised by now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

England playing a form of football in this second half that I've not seen from a team of elite players since the 90s.

    Mad to watch that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,948 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Serbia did OK, just lacking a final ball. England not that convincing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

They kept having that final ball being a direct one through the centre, instead of getting it wide to swing it in for Mitrovic to get his head on. In fairness though, Serbia did try to get it wide a good few times, but the English defenders did well to cover it. Felt like that was the route though.

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

I think if mitrovic stayed on him and tadic do something. Jovic has been unreliable since his move to Madrid which is a shame as he was so good at Frankfurt first time round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,716 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

First game of the tournament or no, Foden was septic out there

Wasn't alone, but job done, 3pts in your first is hard to criticise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,176 ✭✭✭Xander10

The Ref has been poor falling for Kane's playacting all night.

Sort of thing the English commentators frown on as a unique foreign trait

That was dire. No fear of England winning this, playing like that.
