just an FYI , Irish rail has published proposed timetables to begin from the 25th of August. Unfortunately the feedback period has passed but I got in some feedback that the trains running outbound after 6.30pm should be starting in Grand Canal Dock

anyway main points for Maynooth line/m3 parkway

    • End of direct services between Maynooth and Bray
    • Morning and evening peak hour Maynooth line services to/from Grand Canal Dock
    • timing changes

    Anyway proposed timetable is attached

The Sligo trains will stop at Broombridge to connect with Luas.

Forgot to mention that . It will be another connection for people heading west of Maynooth without the need to go to the city or Maynooth

Nice new options leaving south side stations in the evening (17:11 from Pearse Street I'm looking at you) but a real dearth of trains past Connolly in the morning.

Inbound terminating at Connolly is becoming more common because of congestion over the river. It should mean that it's not too hard to change to a DART.

Changes came in today. More peak hour trains running to and from grand canal dock until 6pmish tonight . After that they're in and out of Connolly until 10pm , then back to GCD

How's the second set of changes been so far? I'm off all this week so trying to figure out what to expect when I'm back in the office. Following IR on Twitter doesn't instill too much confidence tbh.

My experience is that instead of being 10-15 minutes late, trains are 10 minutes late. But maybe there are improvements somewhere.

The new timetable has been a bit of unmitigated disaster for irish rail . more significant changes coming from the 14th October . hopefully the morning train to Bray is reverted and that they keep the evening Longford running from Pearse or GCD, has been carrying decent numbers

Irish Rail also seems to have been unlucky with a high number of non-timetable issues - technical faults, signal failures, idiots driving into bridges and level crossings.

    Extremely unlucky

Anyone know the reasoning why Broombridge doesn't have a live timetable of expected trains in either direction like (I think) all other stations along the Maynooth line? For instance there are expected Luas times and intervals posted on the adjacent tracks but nothing for the train line so very annoying getting off a Luas to be unaware of the wait time without having to resort to looking up the Irish Rail website.

Historically vandalism I would say but if no one has asked for it, doesn't look like they're going to proactively fix it/turn it back on.

I emailed info@nationaltransport.ie to ask for an extra Leap card tag scanner between train and Luas. There's always a queue at the single scanner for those changing from train to Luas.

You could email the same email address to ask for them. Maybe with most people having smart phones they figure they can look up the Irish Rail website - sure what else do you have to be doing while waiting :-)

The whole station was de-developed years ago when the Luas was extended and the Luas have overhead electronic displays so no reason why the train line is excluded. Even newer stations such as Pelletstown have electronic displays so odd that Broombridge as a major enough interchange facility is excluded.

Thanks @daymobrew for requesting the additional leap scanner, well needed. The fact you have to tag off the train and back on the Luas is ridiculous in itself for a supposed connected rail system and both tracks adjacent. I rarely use the train and wasn't aware of that requirement initially so when I tagged off the luas in city centre it saw that as a new journey and charged the previous at €4 which took something like 6 months to issue a refund. That would be somewhat akin to leaving Connolly to tag off the commuter train to enter again to board the Dart.

Anyway will send an enquiry to above email address asking why Broombridge has no electronic timetable display for the train lines.

Train late this morning, Sign on platform times not updating. Train home 3 carriages and rammed.

I don't really expect a train on time theses days. I just go knowing the longest I'll have to wait is 20-30 mins.

I took the evening 5.09 train to Longford train home last night . very popular and busy .

Its great to be able to stand at Pearse at 5.10 and catch your train, it was the one gap that was missing .

Also great to see 2 or 3 dozen getting on the train at GCD, shows it will be used if available

There is actually 2 scanners for the train, but a lot of people seem unaware of the second one. In the evenings heading west, the one with the long queue is the one beside the Irish Rail ticket machine, at the end where the 40E bus-stop is. There's a second one down the other end, about 20 metres before the lifts. (But obviously no reason why they couldn't put a third in).

I've marked the two that I know about on this map. Is that the two you mention?

(the one on the left is at the very end of the westbound platform so not useful for those dashing from eastbound train to Luas).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,606 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Yes, those two. I'll call them East and West. I can see how East would be the more useful in the mornings after you come down the stairs after exiting the train. West would be a chore.
Though in the evenings after people get off the Luas they seem to just use West and largely ignore East.
Unfortunately if you emailed complaining there's only a 'single scanner' then they may just file it as an incorrect complaint.

    edit :

Actually not sure your Xs are correct. There is definitely one at the tag on your map labelled 'Luas Green Line'. So is there actually three in total? I'll look tomorrow.

You are right, there’s 3 Irish Rail tag points. While the middle one that you mentioned is not far from the one at the bottom of the stairs I highly doubt anyone will walk the 20 secs (each way) to it. Another at the bottom of the stairs would be very helpful.

Well said . Also they really need to upgrade the information displays on the platforms to the newer blue ones. The older ones the information can be illegible , especially at Clonsilla and Maynooth.
