What is it with people putting L plates on the sides of their cars now?

never seen this. I’ve only ever seen them on the front or back (or both) either inside or outside.

Never even on school of motoring cars have I seen them on the sides. I think AMKC you just saw (or imagined) a car with them on the sides and then opened this thread.

I did not imagine this I actually seen it and will take a picture next time I see it.

Posting a picture is probably not going to help your quest to find out why they are doing it.

Actually only few hours a car pulled out In front of me I'm coming from right car tuning left was like ffs drive on (100km road)as didn't even speed up looking in mirror after L plate on back of it. I think if had one on side of car too it would be good idea you more cautious went you see it at Junction ect

Apart from driving schools I've never seen it. It would appear nobody else has either. How many times have you seen it?

sometimes it’s shared car with kids at home and sometimes it’s to try and trick the Gardai. A garda explained before when I had forgotten my licence to be really careful not to forget to leave in car at all times as it’s common enough practice amongst learners driving unaccompanied to put up N plates with or without L plates to try and avoid getting stopped if they are seen driving solo.

At busier checkpoints they will usually just check the discs and wave you on but if they see L plates and a solo driver they’ll always try and do a licence check. If it’s N plates or both depending on time and the traffic waiting to pass they may not.

Could be all a load of shite or one Garda’s point of view on the matter but I’d say it’s not entirely untrue anyway. Not going to work out much longer anyway since I believe via the mobility app now they can get real time licence details but that might just be insurance I can’t remember 100%.

Although Wikipedia (which is never wrong) doesn't confirm:

"All new drivers in India, upon receipt of a provisional licence, must display L plates at all times (usually on the front and rear of the vehicle) and be accompanied by another driver who has held a full and valid licence for the type of vehicle being driven and also be in a position to control the vehicle."
