Was on the new walking area beside Dunnes today, absolutely wonderful space, semi mature trees, plants etc, feels smaller than I thought it would be but overall good.

You've all been very quiet on the politics.

DIdnt exactly capture the imagination did it. Boxer back despite no local floods.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,126 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Perhaps he should have run for Roscommon as well (some fella in Dublin ran in two regions and got both so it's not unheard of) They've been having some awful flooding issues.

Kind of ironically, the South Roscommon section is called Athlone.

Coffee Haven and Kafe U just announced they were closing at the end of June!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,072 ✭✭✭rn

Haven't been in Coffee Haven in a while - it had dipped a bit in quality even before the pandemic. But still a big loss to the area. Kafe U was certainly a good spot for grub on the east side and a big loss.

I'm guessing the college trade wasn't as strong as Kafe U hoped.

    ..

I'd say trade is good - it's just the margins are hard to maintain. Price of food and costs relative to charging a price for it. And then they are probably coming in to Lean period for July and August with college closed.

I have to imagine that government supports must have an expiry date upcoming. Would want to be some conuncidence otherwise

A bit surprised that Kafe U is closing up. Anytime I've gone it's been quite busy and the food was always lovely. There were times during the winter where we've gone and the only seating available was outside and we didn't fancy sitting out in the cold so went elsewhere. They hadn't really enough space for seating inside to meet demand. But I agree the cost of overheads - electricity, rent, wages and VAT rate I would imagine have all contributed. I'm not sure how much business the college students brought in but my son is college age, doesn't go to Athlone but when he meets up with his friends at weekends or college holidays that's where they meet up for lunch.

The changed around the whole store in Roscommon. I think the deli is gone

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,126 ✭✭✭✭flazio

I know in the same ish area of the Ballinasloe Tesco, there's a Holland & Barrett but there's already a full size store in Golden Island so it's unlikely to be that.

Anyone on west side of Athlone seeing the mini drama going on between the monksland youths clubs Bealnamulla and st. Joe's? Two clubs playing in the same colours. Traditionally Bealnamulla are the ladies club and Joe's the boys. Joe's have now set up a girls team. Both clubs running free summer camps to win hearts of young kids in the area. Families split over it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,574 ✭✭✭veryangryman

Was the credit union in monksland always closed so many days of the week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,072 ✭✭✭rn

No. Seems to have gone back since the merger.

Used to be monksland was open Tues- Saturday, with athlone Monday to Friday. Now monksland is Tues to Friday.

Wasnt there talk of expanding Athlone cinema a while back? In it for first time in years at weekend and it's so dated

I think planning was approved, but that was back in late 2019, then covid happened and things just stopped, by the time things reopened, numbers never recovered to what they used to be so the plan was shelved.

I was last in the cinema for Avengers Endgame which was April 2019.

When you have a 40"+ TV at home, no screaming kids, not paying a tenner for popcorn and a coke, and no sticky floor, the appeal of the cinema is less than it was.

I used to be a fan of the adult cinema in Dublin(No! Not that kind of adult cinema). The seats were more like armchairs, fully licensed bar, 18's only. Smaller screen but a more intimate setting.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,126 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Plus Omniplex has increased the competition in Roscommon and Ballinasloe, although they seem to struggle with numbers as well. I worked in Athlone for a time while it still had seats on slanted floors and a box office up front, that's not all that long ago and already the place looks run down.

I think there were objections from a fast food outlet close by…

This article from the Westmeath says planning was granted in 2019, then an application to extend the period of planning was refused earlier this year.

    https://www.westmeathindependent.ie/2024/04/04/blow-for-athlone-cinema-revamp-as-council-refuses-to-extend-planning-approval/

It's a pity. Granted I don't go to the cinema that often. But the cinema in Athlone as it currently is - isn't appealing or inviting. The popcorn is stale and the place feels a bit grubby.

    And there's 2 cinemas in Mullingar?! 😮

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,556 ✭✭✭roosterman71

Stale popcorn and grubbiness don't need planning permission to fix. Is it a case of laziness or a don't give a fiddlers attitude?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,574 ✭✭✭veryangryman

Tis a dying industry. Coupled with the price of even farting these days, Id say those with the chequebooks are holding off

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,010 ✭✭✭Lewis_Benson

    Tis a pity.

The Omniplex in Ballinasloe is a lovely cinema, well laid out and comfortable seating.

Been into it a few times and enjoyed it. But as stated already, it's not wedged when you go in, numbers are low, which means it may not last. Kinda sad, the cinema is a great night out and less expensive than going for pints.

Both Coffee Haven and Kafe U are still open under new management. The former is now called Spanner Café and the latter is called The Good Café although there's still a big Kafe U sign on the side.

Kenny Auto Parts, down beside Aldi is boarded up.
