Tailteann Cup 2024

Tailteann Cup counties won't be impressed if the semi-finals are switched to Saturday. To be fair, I think hurling does need the promotion on the Sunday as they have only 5 games left. The danger for the GAA is that if Tailteann counties feel they are being mislead by GAA HQ, there could be motions coming for an open All-Ireland football championship without the tiered structure. Offaly weren't enthusiastic about the Tailteann this year. In hurling, Offaly don't want any relegation to the McDonagh!

Kildare's season goes from bad to worse. Were favourites to win the Tailteann Cup but dumped out by neighbours Laois today by 2-11 to 0-12. Glenn Ryan surely must go after this pathetic year in charge.

Wow. Some result for Laois. Did not see that one coming (and neither did the bookies)

And Laois lucky enough to overcome New York in Portlaoise last weekend. It looked all set for a Kildare win but they can never be trusted.

Hard to believe just how rubbish Kildare have been this year.

Fair points by the Sligo manager on the proposed switch

"For three years now we've been trying to give some status to the Tailteann Cup, trying to tell lower ranked teams that this is an important competition and we respect it, it has a position in the calendar and it has its own rights," McEntee said.

"Sunday the 23rd was the date set that teams who had done well and got to the Tailteann Cup semi-final would get a Sunday afternoon slot and get the high-profile exposure that had been agreed to.

"All of a sudden this is changed and that slot is now going to switch to hurling. The GAA still say the Tailteann Cup teams will play in Croke Park and it will be televised on the Saturday. It’s the integrity of the competition and more so that when the hurling teams lobby the GAA, the GAA will readily switch the dates for the competitions at a whim's notice."

    Semi finals

    Down v Sligo

    Antrim v Laois

Game of two halves in Tullamore imo. Laois were lucky to hang in there in the first half.

Second half felt Laois had more control. Probably should have had a 3rd goal

Saying that the Laois goalie made two good saves and Kildare hit the post near the end.

Felt like Kildare had plenty of possession but didn't know what to do with it.

Sounds an awful lot like Laois beating Limerick at this time last year.

Looks like some people in Central Council saw some sense and the semi finals stay fixed for next Sunday. A vote to change, on the back of a Wexford motion, got 57pc, just short of the required 60pc.

Would have been very unfair, especially to Laois to have to today and then play semi final on Saturday. They need to push out the All Ireland finals another 2-3 weeks to give some more space on the calendar.

It was also very short sighted to potentially give up Croke Park for a rugby match at the peak of GAA championship season.

Good old Kildare, never let you down.

Very excitable commentator on the game.

Be a big upset for Down to go on and lose the cup from here. I'm hoping for redemption for last year's final and a cup to instil a bit of confidence into a young squad going into Division 2 next year.

I think it was important the Tailteann Cup semi finals today were not switched to yesterday for the prestige of the tournament going forward. For it to be taken seriously by counties, players and management it deserves primetime billing for its semi finals and final. Hopefully down the line it will get bigger crowds for the semi final double header.

I'm all for promoting the Tailteann Cup but I think to be fair on balance, the Tailteann semi-finals should be on Saturday and the hurling quarter-finals on Sunday.

Antrim were going very well in the first half before the Laois goal. Laois finished the half strong after the goal. Antrim need to regroup at half-time.

I would get rid of the All Ire hurling prelimary quarter finals so free up a weekend so you wouldn't have to choose between a Saturday and Sunday for the hurling quarter finals and Tailteann semi finals. Have them both on consecutive Sundays.

6 point swing in the blink of an eye. Laois hotbthe crossbar to go a goal ahead. Ball ends up in back of Laois net moments later. What was it Paidi O Se said 'the difference is a grain of salt'. Small margins.

Laois were fortuitous with that goal. Attempted point effort was nowhere near but dropped kindly for a Laois player to punch it into the Antrim net.

It's turned into a good game. Laois looking strong but Antrim finished with a flourish away to Fermanagh they'll need more of that today if they're to progress to the final.

That's it over now. Few Antrim attempts drop short and could have made it a one point game. Now it is 6.

Shocking marking from Antrim. Similar to the first goal he scored. Whoever was supposed to be covering number 6 has a lot to answer for.

I think Antrim are the better team, but they haven't shown it today. They've made silly mistakes.

Second semi final defeat in a row to Leinster opposition for Antrim. Last year it was Meath. Today they fell away badly towards the end and Laois finish much the better to roll on to the final. Decent game.

The flaw with this suggestion is that beaten provincial hurling finalists wouldn't have two weeks to recover.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭YabaDabaDooley

Maybe move the Tailteann semi finals to the Sunday before. Im sure the fixture makers could work around it to make sure both get live tv Sunday billing.

    That's some goal by Sligo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭YabaDabaDooley

Super goal by Sligo. Love their jerseys. The All Blacks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,998 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

It's a point for Sligo, but it really should have been buried in the back of the net.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,998 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Sligo with a second beautifully worked goal.

    Very enjoyable game.

Really helps that it's played in good weather

Be nice to see Sligo make the final. Down only put 8 goals past Laois last year i think. I'd rather a Sligo v Laois final.
