No idea how you’d think the poster in an way could have meant what you’re implying. You seem to have completely missed the poster’s point

The Military Prison still exists in the Curragh , it’s currently mothballed having recently been used to imprison sex offenders.

I can vaguely remember a member of the navy being sentenced to 3 months imprisonment and dismissal , though can’t remember for the life of me remember if he served his sentence in military custody round about the year 2000.

I do know there are members of the defence forces who are solicitors or barristers and you can actually attend court martials by appointment once they are not of a sensitive nature and you don’t intend acting the bollix , details of any upcoming court martials are available to see on the defence force’s website, there are also legal practices who specialise in military law.

Her actions ARE the reason why society is fcked up!

This is a case of a serious assault not getting dealt with correctly by the courts. Constant attempts to create a gender narrative is really tiresome these days.

Are these headcases now organising rallies saying anything about the passerby who helped stop the attack?

In my opinion this is diluting the important issue that was originally highlighted. It suits the government to have this become a gender bashing / blaming session to distract from judges not jailing scum because we need more prison space.

So, she asked someone to stop throwing homophobic abuse in the street, and that warranted her being beaten to within an inch of her life, and you think, her actions are why society is fcuked up?!?

    Your posts are fcuked up.

I don't think the government were involved at all, it looks like an organic event which mushroomed most likely due to social media coverage. Unless the governement are controlling all social media platforms and directing the narrative.

Statistics on violent assault by the gender of the victim. Men are far more likely to be victims of assault than women.

What more does she have to do? Please, tell me. I am all ears. Women are being attacked, abused, and killed right in front of our eyes.

What has to happen before society wakes up and addresses what Justice Minister Helen McEntee has herself called an epidemic?

There are lots of similar articles like the above doing the rounds in the media right now. They are disingenuously trying to portray assault as an issue that only women face when statistics show it's actually the opposite.

I am all for seeing stricter sentencing for assault, but surely it should apply on an equal basis to all?

As I’ve contributed to this thread I’d just like to point out that the disgusting remarks above have nothing to do with my account - I’ve an underscore on my name -unfortunately the username still appears similar to mine

it doesn’t matter wheather your female or male …. We are all vulnerable to scum attacking us and we badly need 2 or 3 new prisons to get vicous scum off the street so they can’t continue to make a limerick city or Dublin City or anywhere else so dangerous!

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,433 ✭✭✭✭walshb

I think we all know male on male violence is far more prevalent. The protest was highlighting the lack of proper sentencing for violent assaults, albeit highlighting the gender base here as well. Bit of a hijacking’s went on, but we get the gist

I think tougher punishments for assaults, definitely custodial, the judge here is getting a hammering online, too much attention about leniency, easy, non punishments etc.,

If only we had a competent tough justice minister

Calling out homophobic abuse is why society is fcked up? Jesus wept.

  • Registered Users Posts: 250 ✭✭Babyreignbow

I think there is confusion where stats of violent crime and gender base violence are being conflated. The figures for domestic abuse speak for themselves, this is intimate partne violence and as McEntee called it, considered an epidemic.

The violence and assaults on our streets are primarily being committed by men and they don't discriminate between victims. They can be gay men, tourists and immigrants.

It was coincidental that these events occured with the announcement of a tribunal of Inquiry into bullying, discrimination, harassment and sexual misconduct within the DF and also the announcement of new legislation to deliver range of new offences to tackle crime and protect victims. This legislation is not gender based.

Judge O'Donnell has probably inflicted more pain and hurt on the innocent victim than Crotty if that was possible, he should be kicked of the bench and thrown into jail. Completed out of touch with reality.

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,433 ✭✭✭✭walshb

The judge in this case, and judges in many other cases are the real issue. McEntee increased from 5-10 years the max sentence for assault causing harm. This poxy judge had 5 years at his disposal, and Crotty was given 0 jail time for an appalling assault. The judge himself labeled it appalling.

Please don't respond to that individual, just ignore. And for all we know he could know the scumbag piece of manure.

  • Registered Users Posts: 385 ✭✭animalinside

It's extraordinary isn't it. The maximum sentence for assault causing harm was just recently 5 years in prison. Not the minimum, the maximum. Despite the fact that she was nearly killed and likely suffers ongoing brain damage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,517 ✭✭✭Ezeoul

If he had imposed the five year max sentence he was allowed with two suspended for the things he "had" to consider, (guilty plea) it still wouldn't have been long enough (imo), but it would have been something.

All it is, all the Judge's actions in letting Crotty walk free did, was assault Natasha all over again.

"nearly killed and likely suffering ongoing brain damage"

    Hyperbole much there?

  • Registered Users Posts: 385 ✭✭animalinside

Quite the opposite - concussions always cause some brain damage and she stated she believed she was going to die.

But not major brain damage no, minor brain damage.

We know about this a lot more now than back in the old days, about the harm that relatively minor knocks to the head can cause. You might want to check out the movie Concussion. Will she be back to normal yeah apart from her PTSD and ongoing panic attacks, but some brain cells gone forever.

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,433 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Are you suggesting what he did could not have killed her, or nearly killed her?

She was beaten “unconscious” by a young man. Bigger, stronger, heavier. Punched her 4-6 times. She herself feared for her life..badly injured and her injuries detailed.

You do realize even an innocuous head punch can kill a person? Never mind 4 punches from a man

What exactly are you meaning here? There is no hyperbole. It was a vicious and very dangerous assault.

  • Registered Users Posts: 970 ✭✭✭Vote4Squirrels

Someone bigger, taller and stronger than you is holding you by the hair with one hand and punching you repeatedly in the face with the other - while people around do nothing.

    Not hyperbolic enough IMHO.

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,433 ✭✭✭✭walshb

His comments are disgraceful. But not surprised. Kevin Lunney got very little sympathy from Francie.

  • Registered Users Posts: 970 ✭✭✭Vote4Squirrels

I’m reminded to paraphrase the Mandy Rice-Davies quote from the 1960s - well he wouldn’t, would he ..

  • Registered Users Posts: 250 ✭✭Babyreignbow

I can confirm, I've lost a few brain cells myself. :) (and have a lovely permanent dent in my head to show for it)

She said she suffered blackouts following the assault and has been monitored for brain bleeds. These kind of brain injurys can lead to seizures and blackouts, changes in personality, mood swings and behavioural issues. It is most likely that she will have to continue to monitor it for some time.

Sickening assault. And more sickening to read a poster downplaying it and accusing folks of exaggerating the seriousness of the assault.

  • Registered Users Posts: 970 ✭✭✭Vote4Squirrels

Yeah I was punched once and was assessed for concussion ( and had it) - that poor wee girl was traumatised and we don’t know the long term effects of repeated blows to the head.

I was the victim of an unprovoked attack in a small town in the south east almost 30 years ago. While at a birthday party in this town, a member of our group who'd had a bit too much to drink went missing. We went looking for him, and on the way back I was set upon by what turned out to be a local nutcase who was notorious for looking for a row. Long story short I had my nose broken with a headbutt.

All this time later I still struggle with anxiety and trust of strangers, and I'm a bloke FFS. I can only imagine what this poor woman is struggling with personally. I hope the DPP appeals the verdict and he sees the inside of a prison cell.
