Sligo have done very well to keep the game level at half-time of extra-time being a man down.

'Nobody wants it to go to penalties'. Speak for yourself Ger.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,293 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That was the first throw up that Sligo won and led to the free and point.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭YabaDabaDooley

No penalty for me. Player hit the deck with slightest touch. Referee wasn't very close to see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,293 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That penalty looked soft enough. There was a little bit of a tug , but the Down player went on and down easily.

I would have expected the Sligo keeper to kick that point, even if it was far out. Nerves maybe.

Sligo num 6 looked like hamstring just went. Must be so tough on the legs playing in that heat with 14 for so long.

Credit to Sligo for giving their all. Unfortunately they were done in by a bad decision from the referee that turned the game on its head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,780 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

The defender pulled his jersey. Foul all day long. Inside the box so it's a penalty.

Defender was silly to pull the Jersey. The GK was there and another defender coming across.

He panicked and paid the price.

Sligo got the rub of the green with the ref all day.

    Down deserved winners.

The referee gave the correct decision for the penalty.

    18. TACKLE
Football: The tackle is a skill
by which one or more players
    may dispossess an opponent
    or frustrate his objective within
the Rules of Fair Play. A tackle
is aimed at the ball, not the
    player.
    A tackler may use his
    body to confront the opponent
    but deliberate bodily contact
    such as punching, slapping,
    arm holding, pushing, tripping,
jersey pulling or a full frontal
    charge is forbidden. The only
    deliberate physical contact
allowed is that in the course of
a Fair Charge one player only
with at least one foot on the
ground , makes a shoulder to
    shoulder charge on the player
    in possession.

I was talking about the wrongful red card. It never would have gone to extra-time if the referee hadn't made that blunder.

Tailteann Cup far more enjoyable then the Hurling over the weekend after all that

Still a primary competition v secondary competition.

elbow into the head of a player when he's in the air is a red all day long. No attempt to even play the ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 702 ✭✭✭gigantic09

Hopefully the final is as good, the players today definitely bought into it and the attendance though low showed many supporters did as well .

Was hoping for a Laois v Sligo final as Down should be hard favourites.

But then again Laois were not given much of a chance against Kildare or Antrim so fingers crossed. That's also two games that Laois finished stronger in as well.

The atmosphere was very good but a lot of the Sligo n Down fans didn't turn up until near the end of the 2nd half while a fair number of Laois n Antrim fans left after their match so it looked like the Hogan stand was always half empty.

Did they show a replay of the red card incident?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭skinny90

Would ya get away there was no elbow to the head.
I didn’t see the replay but it didn’t look like an elbow to the head.
it seemed to be a swinging arm which hit the down player chest/shoudler in the air causing an awkward hard land

Borderline yellow maybe but not a red

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,293 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

No. At no point at all did they show it or say what it was for, didn't say whether it was merited or not.

So which is It? 2 knees on the Down player's neck or elbow into the head? Maybe he did both. 🙄

The RTE report doesn't even say what Nathan Mullen did wrong.

That was the final today between Sligo and Down. Unfortunately Sligo got done in by the referee. Down will beat Laois easily. Surprised Antrim couldn't beat Laois. They didn't help themselves with the soft goals they conceded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,780 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

How did they get done by the ref?

They didn't score for 20 minutes in the second half. They gave away a silly penalty. They got a point ahead with 2 minutes to go and couldn't hold on.

Showed it fleetingly on the news. Down player at full stretch to catch the ball over his head, and sligo man crashed Into his back at full speed. Down man was wide open, it looked like a cowardly and dangerous tackle, should merit a long suspension of it looks anything like it did at first viewing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,470 ✭✭✭Choochtown

On another view he went down with 2 knees but it was just the 1 knee that landed on the neck.

Edit: Sunday Game showed different angle to clear it up

Defo red card. Well done ref for spotting it and taking the correct action

Down v Laois final. Down lost in last year's final and then to Westmeath in the Division 3 final. Laois were destroyed by Down in last year's semi-final. Laois won their Division 4 final. Down strong favourites. Hopefully it'll be a good game. The McDonagh Cup in hurling has provided great finals.

FT Down 0-14 Laois 2-6.  Added time goal for Laois and Down hang on, deserved winners in the end.  First final win in 13th attempts for them I believe.

Down deserving winner but hanging on at the end. They'll struggle at senior next year, like Meath.

Down look a average team. They were lucky to beat Sligo in the semi. They don't seem to have a plan B it's all run at pace with the Johnson. Very little kicking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Notmything

Down were the better team, Laois struggled to get into scoring opportunities.

Poor enough game, second Laois goal put a bit of gloss on the scoreline

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,486 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Only very slim margins in Ulster and Connacht kept Down and Sligo out of Sam. That would make both of them above average teams, with performances like that against two of the last four in Sam.

"Armagh snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as they fight back to secure their place in the final. They had to do it the hard way as they had to battle back following two Down goals, but they got back to level terms heading towards 70 minutes and then they had the quality to win it in injury time."

"Robert Finnerty's goal in additional time at the end of a pulsating second half spared Galway a shock exit as they limped rather than sprinted over the finish line with a two-point defeat of gutsy Sligo in a Connacht semi-final that defied all pre-match expectations. 20 Apr 2024"

Sligo were the best team in the competition. Very unfortunate not to win it, 3 points up against Down in the semi-final when the referee changed the whole momentum with the sending off. And because the rules have changed, they had to play extra-time with 14 men as well. That was the final really, not today.

Referee changed nothing, that guy almost got his head taken off with a lunatic, dangerous tackle. Let's not blame refs for good decisions.
