This forum is going to hell or needs better moderation. The amount of misogyny, hatred, and bitterness around here is getting to be OTT. Don’t like a presenter, that’s fine but personal attacks, gloating on their misfortune or denigrating people on a personal level who haven’t even taken up a post yet isn’t on. I’m here because I’m interested in the effects of the changes going on in the industry here just now. Not a radio pro but an avid listener. It’s not much fun trawling through angry keyboard warrior stuff at tge same time.

its funny how GOC on breakfast 2fm only lasted 18 months, i thought he was there a long time. I remember they had a billboard campaign bigging up the "Des and Gareth" element with football jerseys on a washing line with their names on them. They really were in a proper war with Radio Ireland at the time and they had to do serious marketing. I thought it was a good show myself, but GOC in the afternoons on 2fm was probably one of their best decisions ever, it was a great show (yes i know about the Steve Wright stuff but I only found that out decades later!).

I am not going to jump on Lottie's grave, i posted here a month ago hoping it would go well for her and TBH I dont think 3/4 weeks is a fair way of assessing her although I did note the lack of interaction between her and her co-host, a minor thing that could be sorted. It's funny wandering down memory lane, I do remember Gerry frequently telling us about "charlotte" and what she was up to in the last few years of his show, maybe he was prepping the ground a bit.

I think Mr Dobson's description on what a presenter does on radio is a bit unfair and reminds me of the sort of thing you hear when workers start looking for more pay ("sure all luas drivers do is push a leaver and sit on their arses all day").

The thing about it is that you never notice a good one but by god you notice the bad ones. Even in the days of Nova and Hot Hits Sunshine where you would hardly hear a DJ during the hour it was the same, and as I have said before this is a national radio station and its paid for by the licence fee, we should be demanding the best talent properly trained to do the gig.

Its another woman, so of course people here will have a pop. As @squonk highlighted, misogyny is rampant on boards…

Definiteky. GO’C in the afternoons was great. I didn’t realise he’d nicked a lot of the presentation style off Steve Wright. It wouldn’t have been noticed here at the time as BBC R1 coukd only be picked up on LW/MW so it was a step down for many to go from FM. Only A252 managed to lure listeners away from FM successfully I’d wager.

You weren't far off the mark. He's co written a Children's book.

And I stand by my opinion that putting Justine Stafford and Garron Noone on a show would be like putting two Liveline callers in charge of a music show.

    "written with" Karen Owen

Just speak some random shoite into this dictaphone here, Donnacha, and I'll try to make something out of it.

Ah feck it, I'll just write it meself.

So apparently Lottie knew all along that she was only doing 5 weeks of the new show, all cleared up now…

"I wanted to clear up some recent headlines about my role at 2FM. When it was announced that I would be taking over Drive, it was always agreed between myself and my bosses that this would be
for a five-week stint. The term "summer schedule" has led to some
    confusion, implying a 12-week duration.

It is a very bizarre loyalty to RTÉ or it is the truth.

    Hold on.

The article on Monday was very clear - with plenty of quotes - that she was "devastated" and felt "used" why would she have those feelings if this was all known to her beforehand?

And the article on monday was true about her being let go from the show so whoever went to the irish sun was in the know.

Some have opined on here that lottie would put up with putting out the bins at 3am if it meant staying in RTE and to be honest her Instagram statement seems to back that up.

A storm in a tea cup. RTÉ should be getting rid.

I'm sure photoshoots for presenters for a five week stint is totally normal. Perhaps the Fair City photographer had a free afternoon 😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,810 ✭✭✭Trampas

So she prefers to read out social media news than host a drivetime show.

    what’s that I’m smelling?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,763 ✭✭✭squonk

It does read like she was fired, got mad, went to the papers, got hauled in by the boss and was told to roll back the story or else. Summer schedule does imply something lasting till September so I don’t think anyone was expecting her to be going anywhere for 3 months after the initial announcement.

The reality is that making say 100k a year for a radio show and not being allowed do outside commercial work simply isn’t worth it for the likes of Jennifer Z, 2 Johnnies, Donnacha etc.

100k for early mornings, abuse on twitter from total oddballs and weirdos, likely to be replaced on short notice. Nah, not a good gig. Loads of folks in their 20’s and early 30’s already bringing home that wedge for a 9-5 Mon to Fri.

poor them! poor! poor them! I feel so sorry for them.

Well done to the folks in their 20s and 30s earning that living, working hard 9 to 5, doubt they have any problems in work!

Just saying that a salary of 100k with no chance of making additional income just isn’t a great deal these days for people who have other revenue streams.

It’s like people complaining that politicians get paid too much when they should almost certainly be paid more.

It’s very easy make 120k+ in Dublin these days if you do some long-term career planning. For that you can get some pretty cushy numbers as well. Talking realistically about 25-30 hours a week, remote work, expenses. No having to deal with online abuse, being harassed for photos when out etc.

    That’s just the reality.

Bod years ago RTÉ should have said to their "stars" that's fine we can't afford you, you head to the US or to the UK and now they should be saying, we definitely can't afford you and if you dislike the terms then you know where the door is and since you are good at your job you can find other sources of income.

In fairness if you want to send me a link to such jobs, I'd happily apply and again those in RTÉ can also avail of such positions with a career plan also. RTÉ don't need them is all I am saying.

So the summer schedule meaning has changed then. I was in college in 2006 and that summer I worked in a place where the radio was on 2fm most of the day and Gerry Ryan was replaced by either Damian O Reilly or Aidan Leonard, and it was more than five weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,330 ✭✭✭RoTelly

In the past RTÉ Talent would take of for the summer, Gay, Gerry and Pat would all be off for 2 to 3 months before returning in the autumn, around that time it began to change with the arrival of Newstalk and the Regional yuff radio stations (Beat, iRadio, Spin), then RTÉ shows would take a week here an there rather than in one full summer. I think Tubs contract had him on 40 - 50days holiday.

Is that the same Damien O'Reilly who did Countrywide?

The inexorable drift to the Chatbot 2000 continues when someone well known for miming videos can take over a show!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,118 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Is it not Justine Stafford that is getting it, not Kayleigh Trappe?

Basically the same thing but at least Stafford seems to have original content in fairness to her rather than just miming. Miming without the black & white face paint may I add!

I think you got skin in the game here.

100 k for playing music and talking muck for 2 or 3 hours a day is money for jam.

Chris & Ciara would have been ideal to move from weekends to weekdays now… except they were fired.

How has Dan Healy not got his marching orders?

That headline is not backed up by what is actually in the article....lol

Her contract was always for 5 weeks...

There has been so much spin and backpedalling with this story, it'd keep a wind turbine going for a month. What an unedifying mess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,460 ✭✭✭Tork

Most people would be dusting down their CV and looking at their options if their employer humiliated them like this. I don't buy that "For 5 weeks" story that's being pushed now. They decided to pull Lottie for reasons best known to themselves and it was manna for the red-tops. Because Lottie knows she'll never have an easier or better-paid job than that of "Showbiz reporter" she'll take it on the chin and hang on in there. Dan Healy & Co know it too. Lottie will do anything to stay in 2FM.

  • Registered Users Posts: 182 ✭✭Chun the Unavoidable

This is literally what RTE said:

"And then in the afternoon, 2FM veteran Lottie Ryan will be presenting the drivetime slot with David O’Reilly, taking over the reins from The 2 Johnnies.

Lottie is a familiar voice to listeners on 2FM and David has been building his profile on the station, regularly joining Jennifer Zamparelli in her slot 'Jen’s friends' and he also co-presents a podcast called Any News with Brendan Courtney.

Head of RTÉ 2FM Dan Healy said: "We are very happy that for the summer we are strengthening our schedule with 2FM homegrown talent with Aifric, Lottie and David.

"It always starts with the audience first and this summer's schedule is built with only them in mind. I believe that 2FM has the most exciting mission in RTÉ. Our mission is to inform and entertain younger audiences with wonderful music, chat and sport. The summer is full of music and sport and that is where we will be.

"We will be working hard to continue to build a station with the next generation of 2FM presenters and there's no shortage of those." "

I mean, you can understand how Lottie Ryan thought she was in "for the summer" - its funny how of the three of them named, the other two are still on air next week.

So it does sound like she was told you're in till September, then sacked, she went to the papers and was then told "this is the line to stick with" and she went along with it. Like everything else in RTE its as clear as mud and the whole thing seems very in house political.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,763 ✭✭✭squonk

I agree. I think they should face lived with the decision however. Lottie isn’t in the door so they should have known her ability. More so, if they were in doubt, do a trial show in house and test the format out. They didn’t and someone shot from the hip appointing Lottie fur the summer. Ok, it’s not working as expected Give them pointers on presentation style. Basically do whatever the fúck you need to do to keep the show on the rails. It’s only 3 months after all. You’ve made a public facing decision, live with it and thank your stars it’s just for the summer.

What you don’t do IMHO is pull one half of the team after 3 weeks seemingly very suddenly. Also don’t blindside them so they’re pissed off and likely to head for the papers. OK, now they’ve kind of corralled the blowback It’s made the place look like an even bigger basket case than it is. Head of Radio of whoever is in overall control in there should be rounding up the various gimps responsible, pulling them into their office and chewing the atses off them before admitting a good kicking and probably P45s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,559 ✭✭✭Clo-Clo

RTE/2FM want to dump Lottie but looks like they can't get rid of her, no surprise, so come out with statement that trys to cover up for firing her from the slot after it was a disaster.

It gets worse by the way.

No chance by the looks of it Lottie is leaving what we would have to expect is a big pay cheque, so is she back to entertainment snippets during the day and trying to act like a teenager?

It’s all very bizzare if you ask me. To get that excited about a 5 week stint screams something is off. She was getting congrats from her pals online - all for a 5 week role

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,559 ✭✭✭Clo-Clo

They are both trying to save face

2FM for sticking her on another show and it been a disaster, then call would be made to fire her

Lottie because she doens't want to admit she was useless, again, and doesn't want to lose her nice pay cheque

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,810 ✭✭✭Trampas

If she’s still a contractor then just let her go when her contract is up if not then she can be one of the 400 getting cut

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,637 ✭✭✭joebloggs32

Part of the problem for Lottie bombing in the slot she got was that the listenrship the two johnnies had pulled were at the opposite end of the spectrum from where Lottie would be fishing.

I used to put on the two johnnies when I wanted a laugh and some easy listening. I had her on for 10 minutes and switched away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,763 ✭✭✭squonk

the huge problem with the RTE restructuring is that the redundancies are voluntary. They shouldn’t be allowed to pull that one. It should be involuntary redundancies as experience by most people living in the real world. You won’t get rid of Lottie or any other underperforming hangers on in a voluntary redundancy. Instead you’ll lose Dave who is good at his job, is sick of the crap and knows he’ll do better doing the same job in an independent company or Laura who has been there a nice while, wants to slow down and takes the redundancy to allow her to work maybe a 3 day week ride where to ease into retirement. So you’re losing experience and competence while the hangers on linger. It’s even more destructive as anyone who is turned down due to being seen as too valuable has already taken the mental step towards leaving so will go eventually if they’d own accord.

You don’t clear out kifers and intransigents with voluntary redundancy. It’s the opposite. It only doubles down on stupid and makes the place worse overall.

Oh I would say she is a contractor but RTE skill to negotiate seem to be pi** poor. So she is probably entitled to some lump sum payoff or an automatic renewal even if she is terrible

After all she is "the talent" 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,559 ✭✭✭Clo-Clo

Exactly, the good people will take a big payout safe in the knowledge they will walk into another radio station

Get rid of lottie and…….did Gerry work outside of RTE?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,763 ✭✭✭squonk

Both really deserve to be rid of each other. 2FM for docking Lottie around by putting her on the show while knowing her capabilities and then pulling her 3 weeks in, Lottie for jumping the gun and going straight to the papers badmouthing her employer without trying to address things internally and then causing a massive embarrassing climb down on both sides that doesn’t refldct well on either party. I do feel sympathy for Lottie but it’s time at least one party grew a pair and did the necessary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,460 ✭✭✭Tork

I see parallels between what happened to Ryan Tubridy last summer, and this debacle. In both cases we've got RTE lifers who've lived sheltered existences and have got to where they did thanks to connections and good agents. When the real world came crashing into both their worlds, neither handled it well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,742 ✭✭✭Wanderer2010

Her employer have with this spin and backpedal basically told her they will do whatever they want with her and she will sit back and take it. The people who have moved on from that station are laughing their heads off at Lottie, just like the management.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,097 ✭✭✭Expunge

She's no longer a contractor (if she ever really was one). A number of sometime on-air types - like Lottie was - have been made staff in recent weeks and months, apparently.

Same money but now tax and PRSI are taken at source.

There are a good few like her who were also "contractors" until recently.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 LloytronN402

I wonder have Tracey Clifford and Jenny Greene also become staffers ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,097 ✭✭✭Expunge

I'd say so. They've been around quite a while and RTE is committed to cleaning up it's 'bogus contractor' act.

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

Was there a proper public procedure to appoint these staff. There really should be that are open. To anyone to appy

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 LloytronN402

They are both mid 40s, so only a matter of time before they are shifted to RTE Gold
