There is no need to reinvent the circle with another fancy tax law on inheritance.

Remove Inheritance relief completely, remove the tax relief on leasing and ideally on forestry as well, remove the ability to shield land purchases within companies and watch the price of land fall to prices of 4-10k/ acre.

There's any amount of so called part time farmer's subsidising what bit of farming they're involved in with money from off farm jobs & unrelated income.

Doing a disservice a long time now I believe to farming. Not much different to business men & wealthy folks buying land to transfer wealth. Yes they may not be thinking about wealth transfer, but doing full time guys no favour with this foreign money so to speak.

I don't think you'll ever get to eliminate Ag relief completely so that's not realistic.

Firstly, there will be cases where beneficiaries won't be able to finance the tax burden and will have to sell, or sell part of, their inheritance. This would lead to fragmentation. Even with the reduced paper value of the inheritance.

Secondly, you would need to also eliminate business relief. Farms can qualify for this as it is. There is a little more work/planning involved but suits cases where the asset test would not be met.

They have started to restrict the leasing relief. A bit too late but a small step. Forestry has two aspects - tax free income and exemption from Stamp Duty for standing timber. I think that climate/environmental policy reasons mean you won't see change there
