Well, I'm interested even if there isn't a whole lot to go on. And I appreciate the ambition in trying to make something grand for the big screen (supposedly a four-movie series when completed), BUT...

I can't imagine it'll be doing anything at the Oscars, the Academy are probably still coming to terms with streaming services, the idea of a 2-parter will surely blow their minds.

And I'm open to alternative hypothesis, but I find a two-parter being released within two months of each other completely insane from a commercial POV. Nobody is going to see Part 2 without having seen Part 1, and there's no opportunity to get that Couch To Theatre audience from those that watched the first at home.

From a marketing POV - hardly an easy sell either, an original IP, and they're trying to frontload the necessity to make two cinema trips within six weeks.

I wonder if they'll go streaming heavy early with the first movie. Give it it's 3 weeks or so in the cinema, but then push it hard on streaming immediately after to build the audience of people who can watch the first one at home with that "new movie" feeling, and then pop out the next night to catch part two in theatres.

Might also benefit from a slower release strategy for Part 2 - get it into just enough screens to create buzz to make people watch the first online, and then release it wide maybe 2 weeks later. Of course that only works if its good though. Either way, 2 months does feel like too little between releases, 3 months would've felt a better minimum gap to let it breath, without getting forgotten.

It might go up against Yellowstone the remaining episodes in streaming

I am not sure it will do big at the box office

It'll likely do quite well in the US given the topic, but I'm not so sure how well it will travel from a cinema audience perspective. I really like Costner so I'll be seeing these and most likely buying them afterwards for repeat viewings.

A lot of Costner's work is very under-rated IMO. Granted he's done some crap, but most have. I'll thrown on the almost 4 hour version of Dances With Wolves every now and again just to marvel at it, so I'm in on this.

Kevin Costner: "I am very cool and will beat you up. Just wait for my stunt double to show up and then mysteriously shoot 'me' exactly from the back of 'my' head."

Saw this last night, was actually very good (imo). Some of the visuals are amazing. I can see why some people wont like it though. Telling 3/4 different stories at once so there is a bit of jumping around. Its a 3 hour watch but does not feel like it. Looking forward to the part 2.

And the last few minutes of the movie is like a preview of the next film, in case anyone is wondering whats going on.

Obviously this is aimed primarily at the US market and given the lack of advertising this will pass under a lot of peoples radar.

    Looking forward to seeing it.

It bombed really badly at the US box office over the weekend just making $4.1m

Isn't it meant to be part one of FOUR though? That's what's putting me off. I'd love to see a good old-fashioned (Not TOO old-fashioned) western with wide vistas on the big screen again but if it's basically a jumped-up miniseries I'm not sure.

Edit: I do like the idea of multiple stories/ Something to get your teeth into but I'm just worried about them getting the greenlight to finish (Part 3 currently filming apparently)

It is, but given it only took 4.5 million in the US on its opening weekend I assume that casts major doubt on the 3rd and 4th film. That said, i think it is worth a watch. Just from looking at the casting in the 4 movies I think 1 and 2 will be "different" to 3 and 4

It looks beautiful, but meanders a lot between the different story threads. many may find it unfocused, but I loved it, did not feel three hours.

The two minute montage at the end r makes me look forward for part two.

how much did hbo pay hi for it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,791 ✭✭✭speedboatchase

It made $11m in its opening weekend. The 3rd movie is currently being shot. The fourth one probably won't happen but I imagine Costner can perhaps tweak the 3rd movie's ending mid-filming.

fantastic stuff. 3 movies in 1. And it didn’t seem at all like 3 hours. Took me by surprise when the Chapter 2 montage hit.

I read that most of the same cast will be returning for three and four but will be playing different characters. That will be strange.

Who is the actor playing the guy who points the gun at Liz outside the dance hall? I thought it was Jamie Campbell Bower until I realised he was Caleb.

Part 1 is hitting VOD next week.

    This isn't remotely surprising.

Wouldn't have predicted or wanted the first movie to bomb, but definitely found myself critical of whoever thought this release strategy was anything other than a needless risk.

See, now THAT'S the perfect platform for this, or via one of the streamers. I could TOTALLY get behind a 2 parter epic western in the cinema. As long as part 2 was deep into post production. And I'm talking DEEP. I'd want a part 2 release of MAX of 1 year. Preferably 9 months. I'm not saying they should do a Marvel FX crunch and absolutely kill their teams, just don't release part 1 until Part 2 is almost ready to go. That actually would be great!

As a matter of fact, Westerns would be ripe for a "shared universe" that studios are clamouring for. Sure, it wouldn't be as tight as the MCU (Covering 100 years or so), but there is space to weave fictional characters between 2 or 3 of the movies. You could cover everything from Lewis & Clark right up to Wounded Knee. Of course it would be pretty bleak but it could be epic and interesting

Im the first to baulk when I hear the claim ‘such and such film should’ve been a TV show’ as I think it’s usually an odd and unjustified claim. But absolutely everything about this undertaking - structure, production, motivation - suggests this very much should’ve been a TV show.

Saw this last night after having read very luke warm reviews, for the most part, and a couple of positive ones too. So decided to check it out for myself......I loved it. As others have said, it didn't feel like 3hrs at all. The acting was excellent across the board, with some beautiful cinematography to boot. Personally I can't wait for part II. I feel like this is gonna be alright when all is said and done(financially speaking that is).
