Back when Boards was bustling and the community was pretty tight-knit, Boards.ie released some t-shirts with the logo made out of users names.

I found it today on a clear out

Man I miss those days so much.

Those days boards.ie was such a great place to be and the forum actually worked well compared to this horrible new incarnation

I think the logo was made with forum names.

    should spend a bit of cash re-promoting boards….new T-shirts, media actually…

Get Leigh Francis in on it, have him pick one of his famous alter egos to do a poster campaign..

Actually rename the site, boards.eeeeeeheeeee, or boards.shamone

    Tshirt idea.. “ boards, it’s proper Bo, I tell thee ! “

I had one too! Long since gone. Probably for the best. Dread to think how it would fit nowadays!

Back when The Ladies Lounge, BGRH, Clearasil & Hormones, After Hours, and The Nocturnal Forum could all organise quality get-togethers, and nobody had to re-reg every week to spout the kind of bollox that infests the Current Affairs forum of the last few years. When there was a soccer team, cycling group, regular Motors events, and the madness of The Cuckoo's Nest. Where did it all go wrong?

The nature of online discourse has changed. Forums used to be for niche interest, which naturally led to like-minded people getting together to discuss and help each other (particularly thinking of the early days of BBS and ICQ where we could chat about computing, games etc.). Finding people who were the same as you was revelatory and pushed the massive growth of the internet.

Then it became accessible to all, so the common bond wasn't there any more (computing, games, musical genres etc.). Without the common bond to unify, even when arguing, it became 'just' arguing. This can be seen in the rise of social media platforms that don't rely on community, but give open platforms without the constraints of a community. (not blaming social media, they simply respond to what the service users want)

Also not passing a judgement, evolution is impossible to ignore or resist, but online communities will always wither when opened up to the masses.

To zoom back in on Boards in particular, look around, see the sort of opinions proffered and people now posting, they're generally not in search of a community, they are in search of a soapbox. That makes it far less attractive to have meets and get-togethers.

There are still communities to be found on here though, as I imagine there would be in any places where people assemble and socialise, it's just not as transparent anymore.

I would happily give personal info like phone number, address to the boards users I chatted with in 2005 (just an example year) to organise a meet, swap comics, videos etc, whereas now I would treat any fellow poster with a degree of suspicion. Times have changed.

^^ All of that for a nice t-shirt. I must have too much time on my hands.

I still have mine, unfortunately it wouldn't fit me now at all…some day I'll get back into it.
