I'd email them. But don't expect a gracious reply. In my experience that doesn't happen.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,718 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

    I have just emailed them.

It's more for their benefit than mine. I wouldn't want to see a business lose custom for something they should be aware of. 👍️

Ive ate in Ritu, found it good, don't think myself or my wife found it over salty

Thanks. I'm hoping it's a once off thing; I'd like to return.

Maybe I should post this in the Stupid Questions Thread, but...

Would it be considered acceptable to bring my own condiments to a restaurant?

I don't mean anywhere fancy or high end now, but, for example I prefer chilli sauce over ketchup on my chips. Some of my favourite hot sauce on my burrito. A bit of Dijon with my full Irish etc.

It's those types of restaurants is what I mean.

I guess I could always ask first, just wondering would it be a bit odd?!

    TIA

oh I wouldn’t think it would be an issue?

I know someone who used to bring a bottle of hotsauce to hotels for their eggs at breakfast. No one minded.

I've often thought about bringing hot sauce to Bunsen. While I love the simplicity of their burgers, I do like some sort of chilli with a burger.

Fab Georgian food at the Geofood place on South Main Street, tiny little shop but has seating and they now do Georgian wines too. Lovely cheese bread (khachapuri) and dumplings (khinkali)

I got meat ones. So tasty and the lovely owner in there makes them fresh!!

    Definitely a hidden gem

I love that little Georgian/Greek shop @Curb Your Enthusiasm, the owner is lovely. Must pop in soon to try the fresh food. 👍️

    Man Friday, Kinsale.

My first visit to this restaurant, and also my first time trying both ceviche and lobster.

The lobster (€46.95) was, OK I guess? I was expecting more flavour, something along the lines of crab perhaps? But the taste was very subtle, even a bit bland.

Perhaps I'm just used to stronger flavours. As I say, I haven't had lobster before, so I have no reference point.

The ceviche (€15.50) was lovely; but again probably due to the lime juice and other additions rather than the seafood itself. But it tasted very fresh, and not like raw fish at all, the citrus fleshed out the seafood protein, but in a very elegant way.

Definitely, this review is my very subjective experience, and these dishes are not at all my area of food experience; I'm much more into bolder flavours, so that's a big caveat on this restaurant review.

It was a very enjoyable experience, lovely surroundings, great service, and not at all snooty. Would recommend for those who like this kind of thing, if you're prepared to pay that kind of money.

A couple negatives that I have to say: the chips were disappointing. Just bog standard. And overall, the meal lacked a bit of punch; a little unimaginative. For this kind of money, I expected something a little more exciting.

(And before anyone asks why I went to a place like this considering it's not really my thang… it was a staff party.)

That menu is straight out of 1992. There's a big market for that kind of thing. Familiar, not very challenging and reassuringly expensive. My parents used to love Man Friday. I've never eaten there.

My parents would have been a bit miffed that the rack of lamb was changed to "rump of lamb". A bit unfamiliar.

Man Fridays is gorgeous , havnt been in a while so must return!

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,718 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

Reassuringly expensive is the perfect description for this type of offering. 👍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 394 ✭✭Iguarantee

€41.95 for an 8oz fillet steak is so, so expensive.

    That's ~€160/kg i.e. quadruple the price you'd pay at a butchers counter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,957 ✭✭✭sporina

now c'mon - you can't compare a butcher's price with that of a good restaurant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,183 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

Sophie's in the dean charge €42 for an 8oz fillet. River Lee Hotel charges €45. Montenotte hotel charges 41 for a 10oz ribeye. All more expensive than above.

Eating steaks in restraunts has always been an expensive business. Man Friday is no different.

Now do chicken price per kg. It will blow your mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 240 ✭✭scrotist

    Why not?

I will go further and compare it to Aldi's. I had a €2.50 steak at home yesterday and it was delicious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,008 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

Ah, here. You're not comparing like-for-like. A restaurant has to buy the meat (likely from a more pricey supplier, if they care about quality etc), pay the chef to cook it, pay the waiter to serve you, pay for the gas to cook the meat, pay for the equipment to cook the meat, pay for the upkeep of the equipment, pay for the premises, pay for insurance, pay for rates, account for VAT due on the sale and a myriad of other operating costs. You are also paying for the service & experience of being served a meal, plus in a lot of cases the knowledge of the chef in their preparation of the food.

So yeah, there's probably a reason why you can buy a €2.50 steak in Aldi whereas a premium steak is going to be north of €40 in a restaurant.

    Why?

Because there is no value in doing so. What does it achieve?

If you find a restraunt too expensive, don't go. How does comparing ingredient cost price to menu price give any insight? It's just ill informed moaning.

Personally, I don't see the value in paying 40+ euro for something that I could source and cook just as well at home, myself. That kind of restaurant food just doesn't have value for me. But what's the point of doing amateur maths on just one of a restaurant's costs?

Do you calculate the price per kg of crisps compared to a 10kg bag of potatoes in the supermarket? If not, why not?

Ingredient costs are one of many factors that make up the menu price. Things like steak, lobster and some premium fish have higher ingredient costs than other dishes so they cost more on the menu. This shouldn't be difficult stuff to understand, it's not very complicated.

Also, people are conditioned into and used to paying a lot for steaks in restaurants. The market probably allows for a slight premium for steaks.

    is scrotist a troll?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 394 ✭✭Iguarantee

My extended family owns & runs a butchering business, which supplies restaurants.

No doubt there’s a high markup on meat but, regardless, €41.95 is expensive, in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,957 ✭✭✭sporina

restaurant overheads - cooking, cleaning/washing up, staff, rent etc etc etc etc.. and I am no expert - don't need to be - just think about it..

bottom line - there is no comparison price wise between a piece of meat in a butcher and a "meat dish" (inc. all the other ingredients) in a restaurant

Where can you get a fillet steak cheaper? (bearing in mind that Man Friday has a long, long standing reputation for quality)

Personally, a steak for that price holds no value for me but it's a fairly standard price as far as I can see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 189 ✭✭Mr.CoolGuy

The general rule in a restaurant is a cut of steak should be about a quarter of the price the customer pays. If the cut costs a tenner than €41 is about right

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,178 ✭✭✭beer enigma

There was a big jump in retail steak prices earlier this year, over 8%, lets not forget that the Supermarkets have way more buying power than restaurants. In January steak price to restaurant was €16.83 per kilo.

Add staff costs of around 25-35% of revenue, rent, power etc and the margins are tight and at the end of the day I guess its my choice if I eat there or not. I have a bigger issue with the quality/source or the steak as there's a huge varience on that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,183 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

Where I get annoyed is when restraunts charge the usual "steak price" but serve up a really pedestrian steak not cooked as ordered. There is no excuse for that and it happens pretty often, in my experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,300 ✭✭✭✭rob316

If a pasta dish is €16 to €20,€40 sounds about right for a steak, although its on the high side. I was in elbow lane recent enough and it about 30 for the ribeye.

9 of us had a fantastic meal in Mae Fitz's Lissarda today - just fantastic - food is top notch and such great value for money - staff wer 100%.. I had turkey and ham and all the trimmings - €16.. every ingredient on the plate was 100%.. a pot of Tea for 1 is €2.25 - 2 tea bags.. Tiramisu was divine - v boozy €7 I think - great menu

had dinner in Blair's Cove during the week - I preferred the above - will review that properly soon - but I'll say this now; started and desert buffets are a gimmick imo.. mains wer v good though

Cooking, cleaning, staff, etc... plus the main ingredient,, Profit.

How much percentage of all the things involved here are actual profit?

No place is going to operate without that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,957 ✭✭✭sporina

well profit is a given - its a business - as is a butcher, the suppliers of the other ingredients etc..

Baba ghanoush at Izz Café. The chilli sauce is partially hidden. Tasty and fresh tasting.

Not a bad deal for €9.90. The kombucha was €4.

I actually got takeway of cafe izz last night! Fab as always and I always manage to have some left over for lunch the next day so I think it’s great value. I love the chicken musakhan.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,718 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

I used to always think they overcharged a bit, but perhaps not considering how things are these days.

I must go back to try the musakhan!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,957 ✭✭✭sporina

we adore Cafe Izz - my fav is the falafel manoosheh - spelling might not be right there - its worth the money - though never thought of it as being €€ - quality stuff - could not be any better - well maybe if it was in Palestine minus the war

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 394 ✭✭Iguarantee

Izz cafe is hugely overpriced, in my opinion.

The quantity is there but the quality is not. €14.50 for their falafel wrap (sit in or take away) is a rip off.

Good luck to them, they won't be getting my custom again.

That was my experience, too, and I hated the way they smush and smear the all the falafel into the wrap.

However, that baba ghanoush plate looks like decent value, considering the bread and pickles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,183 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

I really don't know how you can say €14.50 for a staple like a falafel sandwich isn't expensive. It's more that twice the price of a falafel wrap in The 4 Liars!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,957 ✭✭✭sporina

we only ever get it in the pizza/flat format - and even my OH can't finish a whole one - v filling.. and he has a big appetite.. I could never eat a whole one in one sitting - always have some for lunch the next day - maybe there is a less in the wrap - dunno.. so meal I can't finish for that price and quality is totally fine by me

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,718 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

    Sea Salt in Cobh.

The kitchen had closed when I arrived there at 3pm yesterday, so only deli options available.

Sausage roll and flat white. Both were excellent, the flakey roll being packed with sausage meat. Good value, I think, at €10.10 for both.

Looking forward to my next visit there; I'll make sure to get there early for the kitchen (they close at 4pm).

3 of us went to Goldie last night - it was exquisite from start to finish - and adored the decor/interior design - so inviting and comfortable.. staff wer brilliant too..

we almost had everything on the menu.. lol - was there with 2 real foodies..

highlights for me wer the toasted seaweed and wild garlic potato crisps, the oyster and hake tempura courgette flower, my main - turbot.. we all had fish - they wer all flawless.. sides wer delicious esp the colcannon and beets, my fav desert was the caramelised white chocolate dish.. we had 2 bottles of Doro Blanco from Portugal.

Aisling Moore and team - smashing it! its not just food - a culinary dream

Where was the place that charged over 16 euro for a sandwich, a cup of tea and a bag of crisps?

Was the sandwich any good 😛?

    The Tankard - Fenit - Kerry - 100% - can't wait to return

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,957 ✭✭✭sporina

Lord Bakers - Dingle - excellent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,957 ✭✭✭sporina

    Blair’s cove - west cork

steak, lamb, monkfish and black sole.. found the whole experience v contrived.. reception area is a marquee - waiter giving us a spiel which he could have just recorded and replayed.. starter buffet is a gimmick, mains ok - desert buffet another gimmick - lots of staff but inexperienced.. v busy and noisy - tbh I didn't really enjoy it - and my sole was way overdone and over seasoned..

In gallo galetti earlier, hadn't been a good few years. As excellent as ever, it's not food that would blow you away but it's good fare and tasty, I thought pretty reasonable price too.
