i agree. That was a cemented half back line. I think byrnes and hannon have a role going forward but automatic selection definitely not. Looking back byrnes should have dropped before this game due to bad form.

Hayes needs to be put centre back next season. For me Hannons physically spent . I do feel Finn got a fine roasting on Sunday but he ll come again. Plenty of jusice left in this panel but there still needs to be more youth..

Limerick will still be there or thereabouts for the next few years , but, not with the same dominance as over the last few years, which it to be expected. They owe nothing to Limerick, won all around them over the last 6 or 7 years.

Btw if Kiely is leaving, can ye please send him down to Galway to sort out our mess; although I think not even Kiely and Cody combined could sort us out 😅! Will have to rely on the footballers.

Any truth in the rumour Kiely is lining up running in the next general election?

What a fantastic team, got so much from themselves and enjoyed it as well, as did we, this time will be remembered for a long time in Limerick, shag the 5 in a row it won't make a bit of difference to the memory we have of them.

Is taking a career break (confirmed on Examiner), till September 2025 (missing a full academic year) so maybe it makes sense

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,696 ✭✭✭Seadin

If he goes, I can't see Limerick been at the top again. Imho.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭shockframe

It needed to change last season really.

We got a bit lucky last season in Munster and the All Ireland win papered over the cracks somewhat.

Since the Kiely reign there is about 12 or so decent forwards that have made a mark but the defence hasn't really changed except for one long term injured player replacing another.

Obviously that wasn't an issue at the teams ludicrous best in 20/21 but it started to show last season and the forward brilliance took the focus away.

In any year you start with the best set of players understandably but it crept up on us as we got close to the 5 in a row attempt and Cork went to town on it with their pace.

Ethan Hurley from Newcastlewest, Jimmy Quilty from Blackrock have been/are on the panel, nobody else apart from Coughlan who seems to have fallen down the pecking order, even though he's making the 26...may need some new blood but will need to come from 21-25 age group as we have been poor enough underage last few years and will be behind Tipp, Clare and Cork next few years

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭shockframe

Cian Scully was also on early enough but seems to have been let go close to championship. And Ronan Connolly too.

Quilty was out with the cruciate injury last season so would be asking a lot to be ready for championship maybe.

Good responses. Half back line is an area that needs work as Cork in particular will be strong their going forward. I forgot about Cian Scully he captained u20s this year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭shockframe

The concern is that you may have a scenario like Kerry Football facing into 1988.

All the greats coming to a shuddering halt and only 1 or 2 anywhere near the level of player in the aftermath of the Golden years.

Dublin and Kilkenny managed to hold on for a while as they had reinforcements on either end.

If 2 or 3 new players emerge to boost what's there then you may get through a transition.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,346 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

    Replace them with who ?

Like honestly which player do you drop and who would you bring in for championship ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,631 ✭✭✭Field east

what is TOTALLY overlooked is that a year from now - assuming no major change in panels- both teams will be a year older. Limerick have reached the top and are on ‘ the way down’ , having an older cohort/ tired legs, etc, and Cork are on the way up re younger age, getting a years more experience, etc.

This can all ‘change ‘ of course if there are skilled young players added to the panels.

REMeMBER, there was a time when we thought , a few years ago , that Kilkenny could never be beaten unless———-.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,095 ✭✭✭Rosita

On the last paragraph.............seriously? Kilkenny will be trying (in vain) to win a first All Ireland in ten years next year. Its a very long time since anyone seriously thought (if they did) that Kilkenny "could never be beaten unless.......".

Dublin footballers (7 All Ireland titles since Kilkenny won their last) might be a better and more modern example.

Id say we needed minutes into someone like Fergal O'Connor. Finn and Casey have had terrible injuries so it was always going to be a concern. We were forced to go with the strongest pairing in the round robin as it went down to the wire but I would have taken a risk on O'Connor in the Munster Final.

Lack of forwards of course is greater concern than backs but the bench was top heavy with attack. Only 3 of the 10 players on the bench were defenders.

Lads, I've great admiration for limerick team and was really hoping ye would do the 5.Ye were a bit unlucky with both p.casey and nash missing last Sunday and ye still could have nicked it but for some freakish saves by Collins. One thing that has always puzzled me is why pat Ryan was never brought back into the panel. Was that his own choice or was he not asked. He would have been handy on Sunday coming down the stretch

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,176 ✭✭✭hans aus dtschl

In fairness, Kk were so dominant for so long it was hard to imagine a stretch where they would be going through such a drought.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,176 ✭✭✭hans aus dtschl

I'm a Cork supporter through and through but I think it's premature to think of Cork as some kind of dominant side just yet. I'd love an AI first and foremost, but beyond that having a team that's a genuine AI contender over the next decade is a big deal. The elephant in the room is that Harnedy and Horgan are hugely important.

But we haven't truly been at the top tier for a very long time and it's great to see a local buzz behind hurling again so long may that last.

Tipp and Offaly U20's coming through give some hope too that things won't be all Limerick, Clare and Cork.

In terms of Limerick specifically (this is a Limerick thread after all) I see the current side coming back hungry next year. You don't get near 5 in a row without serious hunger and commitment, and I suspect they'll be well fired up already now. If Limerick don't win next year that's a different story, but I expect a big backlash from Limerick in 2025.

Pat Ryan had off the field issues. However I'm not sure if the decision to remove him from the panel was a personal or management one.

Might not have helped him but there was enough players in attack to compensate.

Ryan was a great impact sub but not stronger than what was starting.

English and O Neill became Plan B over time.

solution, a chat called Davy Fitzgerald from Sixmilebridge

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭lukin

Corkman here, don't worry I haven't come to gloat 😊. I actually thought it would be Tipp and not Cork that would be the team to take ye down. Because they won two U-20 All-Ireland's in 2018 and 2019. Cork won it the two years after that and again in 2023 but I thought Tipp's players would get on the senior team before ours did.

But those Tipp teams did not fulfil their potential it seems.

Feel sorry for Hayes, genuinely feels like watching Paul Gascogne self destruct all those years ago. Unfortunately expecting more of this kind of stuff from him in the future.

At the same time pure stupidity and only himself to blame driving at that speed knowing how it would work out if caught.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,647 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Why do you feel sorry for him? Would you feel sorry for him if he crashed into someone while doing 150kph in a 100kph zone? What about a person taking personal responsibility for their actions?

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,299 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

In his character reference Kiely said everyone deserves a second chance. Let's see what Limerick GAA do now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,504 ✭✭✭High bike

He should never play for Limerick again because be broke the speed limit

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,235 ✭✭✭big_drive

150 in a 100 limit zone is significantly over, silly from him given everything else. Would be important to keep the head down and not have more headlines so soon

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,095 ✭✭✭PeggyShippen

The difference is Hayes doesn't drop his sporting standards. He's an aggressive young man.. these little things have to be taken in context. All minor stuff
