Contra 4's final stage is a vertical climb through gargantuan levels of bullshit. It goes on forever as well. I mean the final stages of Contra 1 and 2 in the arcade are the same but they never went on this long. I thought I got close to the end but turns out I only got about 3/2s of the way through.

Had a pretty mediocre run of contra 4 last night. Kept getting stupid deaths and losing weapons but it wasn't a disaster. Got to the two stages that preceded the last stage that are usually a nightmare for me and absolutely stormed them and picked up loads of lives from score. Went into the final stage with 15 lives. Sounds like a lot but very easy to screw it up. Got to the boss with 12 lives and decent weapons which I managed to lose with two cack handed jumps before the boss.

Boss is very tough, fantastic pixel art. I was without weapons but he drops weapons every so often so not too bad. Managed to kill him with 6 lives left.

Was going to move on to some analogue pocket games but think I'll stick with the DS and give Spirit Tracks a proper go.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,747 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

So Ive spent two nights playing Spirit Tracks and it still feels like I'm not out of the tutorial. I'm kind of glad Nintendo have moved on from this form of inelegant handholding.

As a long time Robotron fan I am ashamed to admit I didn't know of the sequel, Blaster.

Booting it up on the cab, courtesy of Retropie, it's bloody marvelous!

In fact, I can see where Minter got a lot of his inspiration for his later titles such as Moose Life and Polybius

After years of being curious about it, I can confirm Touch the Dead/Dead 'N Furious (DS) is a great little House of the Dead clone converted for touch controls and is utterly gimped by a fidgety-as-**** reload mechanic that cripples what's already a pretty tough game of reflexes. Initially it lent an air of tension to the proceedings, but as the hordes increased, the novelty of having to carefully and precisely draw your clip across the screen wore out something fierce.

Playing a lot of metal slug 2nd mission and it really is a massive improvement on the already excellent first game.

It really has the absolute essence of a Metal Slug game. Really impressive how they achieved that on a handheld at the time.

The first game is good too alright, but it's definitely missing that certain something.

Im really impressed by the pixel art. It looks incredible and the animation on everything seems over the top for a handheld game. Every sprite has so much personality. It's also more than twice as long as the original game. They packed so much into it.

Have graduated to that level of impatience where I'll spent hours learning to cheese a course in Monkey Ball rather than learn the level. AV/RGG's design and accommodation for 'breaking' levels they've obviously designed with care lends a whole new admiration for the work they put into their stuff.

Hard Corps Uprising is the greatest sequel to ever exist that I only just heard of in the last 24 hours.

It's really damn good and It's a shame it's stuck on PS360 and Konami never let Arc System Works make another. The DLC characters are excellent as well.

Just coming to the end of Rent A Hero on the Dreamcast, should have the last couple of missions finished over the weekend.

100% worth a go, very funny game. The only thing that annoyed me a bit in this translation is they changed all the names to 'funny' ones. Like 'Hangover Park', 'New Dork City', 'Cornhole Valley' - the character names are different too.

I thought it seemed a bit on the nose and really not fitting with the game. Looked up a walkthrough and all the names are Japanese. 'Hangover Park' where you live for example is actually called 'Kojhia' in the walkthrough. So not sure what's going on there. Translators taking liberties?

One other niggle I had was the lack of interaction. The detail in the interiors is absolutely amazing. There are fully fleshed out houses with all kinds of things in them. You'll find gashapon machines and other types of vending machines all over the place. There's even a Gigo arcade full of Blast City cabinets.

BUT, absolutely nothing is interactive! It's basically 'Shenmue, the comedy'. Some little touches like being able to collect capsules, play some games in the arcade or just interact with some of the TVs and stereos about the place would have just made it so much more.

I had a craving for some StarCraft. Installed the blizzard launcher and downloaded the game.

I remember it being 450mb roughly, with the Broodwar expansion being similar. I had them on one disc years ago.

Turns out they've added HD textures. It's now over 5Gb to download! I was shocked.

I ended up just playing one level and kept toggling between original and HD textures to see the difference, and didn't really play it properly.

On a side note, you can only see the HD textures if u purchased the enhanced edition. This means i would have bought this game with the knowledge of these HD textures, but simply forgot about it....

Had a quick go of that PS2 version of Sega Rally and it still holds up remarkably well.

Finished up Steamboat Chronicles and started Ace Combat 4. For an early PS2 game it's very graphically impressive. The gameplay still kicks ass but what I'm surprised by is the story which so far has really grabbed me.

Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow follows on from Aria by being a better SotN than SotN. Even the touchscreen stuff isn't that bad for an era in which they were getting tacked on to everything.

I powered on the AES for the first time in ages, and Puzzle Bobble sucked nearly an hour of my life away, like a bubbly cute dino vampire

Finished up Ace Combat 4. Fantastic game if a little short.

Managed to get Klonoa 2 working with the SSD. There's an option in OPL to defragment in 8bit chunks or something but this has sorted it out and I managed to play through the first stage. It's such a fantastic platformer.

I'm in the mood of a good jrpg so started up Digital Devil Saga. I tried playing this on PS3 but the version that was sold didn't work in the emulator and ran at 3/4 speed with audio sync issues. It's kind of insane they actually sold it on the store. Anyway it's a much better experience on real hardware!

I'm currently juggling Final Fantasy IX and Ace Combat 7.

Mentioned before but it's my first playthrough of FF IX. I've had a copy of it since it came out and has a few false starts over the years but never saw it through.

Which is a right shame as it's turning out to be one of my favourite FF games. Story aside, it's absolutely amazing what they managed to pack in visually. The prerendered backgrounds an prerendered animations used throughout the actual gameplay are stunning. Soundtrack is incredible too. Just such a wonderful game all round.

Ace Combat 7 is just pure silly fun. I've a friend playing it through at the same time and he's miles ahead of me (I'm half way through on level 10 now, he's just finishing up)

I kept having to repeat some levels multiple times and he was taking the piss out of me.

It transpired that he's playing it on easy and in third person mode. I fell around laughing when I figured that out. I'm playing it on Normal and in cockpit mode. He thinks I'm mad, I'm adamant it's the only way to play the game.

So, I tried out Strike Gunner STG on the Snes (via Analogue Pocket) and, well, it's all a bit dull, isn't it?

Feels like they were going for a Aero fighters vibe, or trying to compete with the much better Shmup content on the Megadrive, but they just forgot to stick a game in there, or any level design to speak of.

I play the odd C64 game most days.

Hope you are playing with the advanced controls as well. The simple controls are actually a hindrance as it doesn't take long to get used to the advanced controls and it gives you a lot more maneuverability. And if your friend is using simple controls then wind him up as well.

Not sure how you can play the game in easy either. Normal is a nice challenge but easy is pretty toothless.

As for FF9 it's probably my favourite of all the PS1 FF games that aren't tactics. Load times are a pain but it's a lot of fun.

I didn't know there were advanced controls at all! Thanks for the heads up, will switch over to them this evening. The standard controls make it feel like an arcade game which can be fun, but I was definitely looking for something a bit more realistic given the overall aesthetic of the game.

Plus you know, always handy in case I ever end up on a flight where both pilots spontaneously die and there's a callout for a pilot….😁

'I can use Ace Combat Expert controls, I got this!'

Advanced controls are a game changer. Makes the game a whole lot more fun and immersive. You can't just press left and right to turn, you have to roll and then pitch like a real fighter jet. Honestly think the game should have totally discouraged the basic control scheme as it's really detrimental to the game.

I'm kind of annoyed I didn't realize this sooner, feel like I wasted the first ten missions of the game haha these expert controls are bloody amazing. Plane is so much more controllable and what I was looking for initially.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,747 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I picked them for the first mission and they just felt so off and immediately changed. The rest of the series has the more realistic controls. I know why they added them for accessibility but they kind of make out that the simpler controls should be default. Anyway at least you are playing now like a true Ace 🤣

Rondo of blood remake on PSP for me. Got through that and unlocked the original Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night… I feel strangely guilty playing it on PSP when I have a rather expensive original CD and PC Engine Duo plugged into one of the TVs in the gameroom.

Symphony of the Night next I think. And another dilemma with it… PS1 original… or PSP version… Portable usually trumps all for me.

Next up.. Castlevania Advance games.. debating… play on original hardware e.g. AGS-101 or perhaps on the Analogue Pocket vs playing all of the Advance games on the Switch collection, the physical version of which arrived recently. I see Dracula X is also on the advance collection… I realise its a discount store version of Rondo, but its one that I am also wondering … its another expensive original that I have on SNES… but I am probably better of playing on Switch right ?
