Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. You could just tell there was going to be a ferocious finishing time - the field was totally strung out after only one lap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,733 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Fair enough, still a 5 second pb and 7 seconds faster that last year at that level is massive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,638 ✭✭✭Hamachi

I disagree. I think top 5 is baseline for Adeleke. I don’t see any scenario where she finishes outside the top 5.

Paulino will almost certainly finish ahead of her. Kaczmarek possibly too. Who else? Drug cheat Salwa Eid Naser? Shaunae Miller Uibo isn’t herself this year. There isn’t really anybody else capable of beating Adeleke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭Musicrules

You've already named 4 and Sada Williams is another. It's the Olympics, you don't think Eid Naser will be the only drug cheat Adeleke will be running against do you? And even without them the standard is so high. A top 5 would be outstanding but she has a chance of a medal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,638 ✭✭✭Hamachi

Sada Williams isn’t anywhere near Adeleke’s level. Miller-Uibo may not even run in Paris. That leaves three rivals. Adeleke was training through the Euros. There’s a very high probability she’ll medal in Paris.

Outside Naser, none of the top 400m women have ever been tainted by doping allegations, so not sure where you’re going with that one..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭Musicrules

    Don't be so naive!

There's a lot of maybe's and presumptions in your post and even then you have her 4th. I think she has a good chance of a medal but let's not talk of this being a foregone conclusion. A top 5 would be amazing and anything higher incredible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,638 ✭✭✭Hamachi

If you have evidence of widespread doping in the women's 400m, you really should get on to WADA right away!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭Musicrules

How would I have evidence? This is a small internet discussion forum in Ireland, calm yourself. I just told you not to be so naive.

Let's hope Adeleke gets a medal anyway, it would be amazing for Irish athletics.

You call the guy Naive, and then follow it up with a 'calm yourself' comment because he responds?

    Please…..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭Musicrules

I didn't think calling someone naive was a big insult? It's separate to the main topic of the conversation anyway, which I think the poster now accepts. The topic of drugs in athletics is a whole other ball game, if someone thinks it's not much of an issue, then I think naive is a good way of describing them. That's my opinion, it's not meant to offend anyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,638 ✭✭✭Hamachi

I'm not in the least offended by your opinions. You're entitled to your views on the prevalence of doping and the predicted performances of athletes.

For my part, I'll drop this interaction now, as I suspect it's not leading anywhere productive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭Musicrules

That's good, I'm not sure why the other poster got offended on your behalf. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. We all want the best for Irish athletes at the end of the day.

I hundred percent agree with this Rhasidat will be gunning for a medal and she is world class. She finished 4th at the worlds last year after a long NCAA Season she on a different level this year in my opinion but Paulino is still the main contender for Gold and same as last year can Kaczmarek get a medal I don’t see her beating Adeleke at the Olympics. The other two that are in contention is Naser who I am not a fan off she is rounding into serious form but doubt she get any respect every again as an athlete and Pryce can she do something after a long NCAA season. She ran a crazy time 48.89 to win NCAA title but that means she has to peak twice need to see her running a Diamond League think she might be doing London next week… . The American girls I am not sure Ellis has come on and Holmes as well but going need to be in sub 49 territory to medal in my opinion! Sada Williams is also a great runner at the big races but Pryce beat her at the Jamaican trials semi finals! Will be interesting but definitely think Rhasidat can medal 💯 percent just not sure what it is yet!!! She insanely good….

Disappointed for Ciara but could just be an off day I hope it’s not the lingering fatigue from the Europeans. She running Monaco on Thursday so hopefully she has a better run.. but needs to be rounding into form

Delighted Sarah Healy got a PB her confidence seems to go out the door at the big races so she running well below her potential so hopefully this gives her a good mental boost! Still lots more to come from her…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,709 ✭✭✭Tombo2001

I'd say with Healy that 7th in a European senior final was actually not a bad result, maybe a bit overshadowed by Ciara's gold; but it was a decent performance, one of our best individual performances at the finals and I'd say it helped her confidence.

No real surprises there. Seeing Cadden, McGrory, and McCann all selected for the mixed and women’s 4x400m, suggests to me that the big guns may not be running the mixed relay. It’s a shame as it’s probably one of our best chances at a medal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,926 ✭✭✭deisedude

The fact that the athletes are forced into a choice by the sh1tty timing is a disgrace and we aren't the only country in this boat I know.

It just means the big countries with the most depth like the US who already have massive advantages are given further advantages over the smaller nations

Ciara Mageean and Rhasidat on the startlists for Monaco Diamond League tomorrow night

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,638 ✭✭✭Hamachi

100%. The only squads with a sufficiently deep pool to field solid squads across all relays are the US, GB, and Jamaica (didn’t qualify for the men’s 4x400m).

It’s very annoying. The mixed team from Rome would be very close to a medal. Zero chance without Adeleke and Mawdsley.

    Diamond League startlists for Monaco

    https://monaco.diamondleague.com/en/programme-resultats-monaco-en/#baseFrame%23__athSchedule%23ScheduleInit%23Monaco_2024_CURRENTEVENT_JSON

Will be interested to see how Ciara Mageean gets on over the rather odd 2000m distance, and to see whether Paris was just a bad race or a sign of poor form.

Very intrigued to see what Adeleke will do in the 400m, think she might be looking to lay down a marker before the Olympics.

The men's 400m hurdles could be incredible if all three of Warholm, Benjamin and Dos Santos take to the start line, but fully expect one will pull out with 'injury' before tomorrow's race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,638 ✭✭✭Hamachi

Not aimed at you, but it isn’t it mad that we are categorizing a 3.58 1500m as a poor race, symptomatic of bad form. 3.58 was Sonia O’Sullivan’s Irish record for 27 years. These days, all it gets you is a back-of-the-pack position in a diamond league race. Shows how much the event has moved on. It feels like 3.56 / 3.57 is becoming the new benchmark of legitimate world class.

I also can’t wait for the men’s 400m hurdles tonight. Should be fireworks.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,539 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

The big three are all still listed in the 400m hurdles tonight, so seems it'll likely be happening. I don't think it's unreasonable to think the world record could possibly go down? Fast track with all three to push each other, I don't think it's out of the question. If not that then a low 46 perhaps.

Speaking of world records, Jessica Hull is gonna make an attempt on the 2000m record. Fair play to her, may as well as she's in the form of her life.

First ever DL win, not far off her PB, brilliant. Sub 49 won't be long coming 😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,236 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Looking good for Paris - that was a very fast time.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,539 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Sedjati is very firmly the Olympic favourite now. Whether or not he'd eventually get to keep the medal is another question 🙂

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,539 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

World Record for Jessica Hull! Wow!!

Ciara Mageean tried going with the pace and faded badly, 10th in 5:43 😐

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,369 ✭✭✭Markus Antonius

So bizarre. 2-3 of the leading pack just pulled out on the penultimate lap and the commentators just completely ignored it. It was almost like they were just there as wind-breakers for Hull.

Something about this championship (being so close to the Olympics) that just seems a bit off….

They were pacemakers 🙂 Their job is to drag Hull to as fast a time as they could. They were supposed to pull out of the race.

…are you referring to the pacemakers? Martín and Guerrero?

What's happened to Mageean's form…..illness, injury? It's only four weeks or since the European Championships.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

You don't watch a lot of athletics outside of the Championships clearly. 😂

Mageean is miles off where she needs to be at this point. Something must have gone wrong in the last few weeks, but the improvement in standards in the event from many others means she was unlikely to contend in any case. On current form she won't make the final, or possibly even be the top Irish athlete in the event.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,828 ✭✭✭✭28064212

It may be as simple as she's not targetting these races. She could be in the middle of an intense few weeks of heavy load, and the races are simply to keep her sharp, without being concerned about times/placing (or conceivably to fulfil contracts). She decided to peak for the Europeans and the Olympics, and everything else is just part of the training, and she considers it all part of the plan.

Or she's injured, or she's unwell, or the Europeans were a peak that couldn't be maintained, or, or, or… We're really not going to know until the Olympics rolls round, barring she comes out with some explicit statement

3:26.73 for Ingebrigtsen, he's got to go for the World Record some day. Will go to Paris as the favourite, but I still think he's beatable. We know he can run fast in these kind of races but struggles when he has to do the work himself. We'll see in a few weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,733 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Am I mistaken in thinking she said she trained through the European championships. (might be getting her mixed up with someone else.)

What a run from Jakob... Looks like his back in shape again. Great runs behind him so.

Hopefully it's that she's in the middle of heavy training. She had a smile on her face when she congratulated Hull if that means anything.

That's a stunning run. Fastest run by a European 19 year old I'd say outside of Jacob. His 3000 metres time from Cork earlier in the week was also outstanding

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,638 ✭✭✭Hamachi

I hope so too, but there’s no denying that was a very poor run. I have my fingers crossed she is simply timing a peak for Paris. My expectations are low right now though.

Excellent run by Adeleke. The only slight concern was Klaver being relatively close. Paulino and Kaczmarek are way, way better than Klaver. It will take sub 49 to medal in Paris.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,539 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Feels like Griggs has been around for a while now that I forget he's only 19. Great future ahead.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 liamooooo

His season has been excellent but really gone under the radar. If he was born 2 weeks later he would be still in the under 20 age category this season and outside of laros the Dutch lad there are not any other 19 year old Europeans putting up these consistent all time leading European times at 1500, 3000 and 5000 for this age

And 0.47 is a long way for Rhasidat to be ahead of Klaver at her best in a competitive 400m!
