At those prices Samsung will be considered when I upgrade next. Won't be this year anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,987 ✭✭✭TheRona

They already crossed that line for me. Gone are the days of €900 for a phone with free headphones worth €300+.

Samsung already offered better value for me this year, and it looks like it's getting worse. A real shame, unless Google can really up their hardware game and iron out the bugs.

I wouldn't rule the Pixel out, and I'm probably not in the market for a new phone for another 12+ months anyway, but definitely will be considering other options at that price point.

Likewise,I've 8 pro ATM but at that price I'd switch back to 🍎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,326 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Yeah, the 8 pro is €719 in local shops. I find it hard to believe the 9 is worth an extra €480.

    Madness and greed

It's not that much different to what top end Samsung's launch at.

Prime Offers on 8 Pro are really tempting me, €780 for 256gb version. But I think I'm going to wait and see what the 9 Pro XL offers. Seems to be a few decent upgrades over 8, new bigger camera sensors, larger battery, 45w charging all seem confirmed from leaks , Tensor G4 and new modem should also help with battery life. Phone is a year newer with a years more support so that does add to value. Whether all that is worth more than 400 extra is the big question. Hopefully the promotional launch offer is good enough to sweeten the deal.

Nothing wrong with my Pixel 6, still in support for more than two more years. Do miss having an optical zoom and would like the bigger screen. Battery life has dropped off a little bit but it's never an issue. If I had just bought the 6 Pro in the first place I'd be waiting for the 10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,197 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Yeah I have a 6 Pro and absolutely no reason to change it yet. When I do though I won't be buying anything at launch unless there's a seriously good preorder offer. If you wait a few months you'll be able to get something from the Pixel 9 series at 25-30% off or so... which will only bring it back down to what my 6 Pro launched at 😡

Don't think it's worth it if one has an 8 pro

I have a Pixel 8 Pro and I usually upgrade every year but this year I don't think I'll bother as apparently there are no major improvements aside from the aesthetics. The Pixel 9 Pro XL has the same camera and battery as the 8 Pro plus the G4 is only supposed to be 15% faster than the G3.

Also any word on the preorder freebies? I remember the Irish market got shafted back in 2022 but last year's Pixel watch/ear buds were nice.

Rumoured freebie this time is a year's worth of Google's One AI Premium subscription that they're claiming is worth €240 or so. It's like they don't want to actually sell any of these.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,051 ✭✭✭opus

I've no plans to change either as got the 8 pro last year & figure it's good for three years (at least!). The watch was sold immediately which made it a small bit more affordable.

    You can't sell a subscription I'd guess 🙂

  • Registered Users Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Phat Cat

The Google One Premium AI plan is €21.99 per month but should be free anyway to help justify the prices of the new phones.

I think Google are have seriously dropped the ball here and can see very poor sales on launch for the P9. I'd say most people will wait until the price drops around Black Friday or Christmas as the first few months is usually Google trying iron out the bugs so you'd be better off buying a cheaper, more stable device in a few months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,756 ✭✭✭wassie

Thats a sh!t bonus offer - a digital freebie that effectively wont cost Google a cent. No thanks.

My bloody yokes getting extremely hot at times lately especially using the tune in radio app

But not exclusively just whilst using that particular app ,

Even now as I type this after browsing for 30 m it's bloody warm, never had this issue with Apple 🍎

Check the battery usage stats per app, it's a pretty good indicator of what is really chewing up resources (and outputting waste heat). There might be a process lurking and not going to sleep properly.

One of my work colleagues in Scotland told me that they have the 8 range at 35% off today, well for some

I got a Pixel 8A from a seller on adverts for €379 still wrapped so perfect new condition.

Have to say, i'm surprised at how little Android has changed since whatever was on my old Pixel 3a which hasn't updated in a long while. In fact apart from the camera at the back being different the main difference between the 3A and 8A is that it is far more responsive so far.

That said i hate the lack of home and back buttons, these gestures instead are a PITA to me, i suppose i have to move with the times. Glad there's another what 6 years of updates on this as I'm a bit underwhelmed at the difference between 3A →8A, so I guess 15A will be my next one!

You can use the home and back button, you just need to turn it on in the settings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,097 ✭✭✭muckwarrior

Took me at least a couple of weeks to get used to the gestures, but I'd never go back now.

Getting an issue here where the screen sometimes goes green in colour and pixelates itself, anybody with any ideas what might be causing this? Only got the phone last week so it's unlikely to be an age thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 357 ✭✭pandabat

Sounds like a hardware fault, possibly loose connector for the screen. I'd contact Google for a replacement although they may suggest jumping through the factory reset hoop first. Seem to recall others reporting same thing once or twice before

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,740 ✭✭✭corks finest

That happened several phones, known issue , ( last year)contact Google

AFAIK lots of ppl got replacementd6

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,290 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Thanks for the advice folks, it was put down as "screen - display problem" and it was immediately approved for a warranty repair without any further questions…

I might wait for the issue to happen again and put photos of same into the package just in case they can't replicate it

Yeah. Played around with the Gemini text service. It's chat gpt for text messages. It's fairly responsive if you ask it to draft something.

Bit of fun messing around with it.

    Yes

Is anyone having an issue with signal strength?

I've tried various fixes, it was just going to voicemail without ringing but got it working again. But the signal can go from one bar to full bar depending what position I hold it in.

Seems to be bad when put lying flat say on the couch but if I hold it in front of me it goes back to full strength.

I'm on basic Gomo so not signed up to 5g.

No issues TBH,but my mate was complaining of not hearing me a few times, yet I could hear him no problem,

That happened via Bluetooth in car and normal calls,

    Better since the last update

is there a big difference between Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro? My main thing is a good camera and good backlight. There is so much info out there so I would like user feedback.

My iPhone 12 is on the way out, I will be buying on Refurbed. It seems good bu again any experiences would be helpful. Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,560 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I use GSMArena when comparing phones. Here is a link that compares features for both phones side by side.

I have no experience with the Pixel 8, but I have a Pixel 8 Pro for about 6 months now and love it.

Went from 12 pro max to 8 pro

    Google camera superior

    They over heat occasionally,solid phone

    Eco system decent

    Id recommend one

But personally I won't buy the 9 pro max,too dear

Spending that kind of money id go back to apple( better resale value)

I agree, the price is initially what put me off in January with the Google Pixel 8/8Pro. They've come down since then but still expensive. I will try Refurbed when I am ready to buy. The main thing with me is the camera.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,740 ✭✭✭corks finest

Honestly I loved the apple camera, but id the 7 Pro aswell as the 12 pro max

    And currently the 8 pro

    No contest

    Google wins hands down.

Climbed our highest mountain on Sat and the pics I got were brilliant, those with me were amazed at the quality,

    Despite the rain,wind etc

How did this turn out (or anyone else with pink lines/green areas on the screen)? Google have acknowledged an issue and have extended the warranty for these devices:

    https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/15009955?hl=en

My device has started with the intermittent pink line. I've been approved for an RMA but want to get a picture of it occurring to send with the device in the event of any disputes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,294 ✭✭✭CantGetNoSleep

I got it replaced quickly after I posted this from Amazon and the new one has been fine ever since. The pink seemed to disappear before I sent it back so not sure if it was a software issue but happy to have it replaced anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,756 ✭✭✭wassie

Google Store is offering great trade in prices on Pixels at the moment.

I picked up the P8 Pro last week for €679.20. Being offered €732 as trade in price on a P9 Pro XL for €1219 which includes free Pixel Buds Pro 2. Tempting as I still have a P7 to sell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,023 ✭✭✭beardo81

I saw that too, the trade in prices have increased significantly.

With the addition of the Buds Pro 2 worth 250 thrown in it makes for a great offer (first in a long time from Google)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,756 ✭✭✭wassie

So I decided to return the P8 Pro (even thought it was a great price) for a full refund.

Trading in my P7 on the P9 Pro XL after being offered €433 - not bad considering I bought it in Sep 23 for €519.
