Junior minister refused communion - ‘excommunicated’

I have absolutely no sympathy for Burke. He was part of a government who pushed for repealing the 8th. Abortion is against the teaching of the church and seen as a grave sin. Did he expect to have zero consequences for his actions?
Even if not officially excommunicated, he would have excommunicated himself by virtue of doing what he did.

Why he would want to have a brass neck to go and receive a sacrament of a church for which he showed contempt in going against one of its fundamental beliefs, I have no idea.

well I know for sure raping children won't get you excommunicated, but maybe saying you voted for women to have control over their bodies could be the step the church didn't want you to know about till an idiot priest in cark let it out of the bag!

Tbh very petty behaviour by the church when it's well known they don't care about children and were only anti-choice as they were worried that their access to children would be reduced further

Yes, I think it is reasonable that any institution religious or otherwise proposing to expel someone should clearly outline the procedure and implications.

You remind me of a caller to Liveline before the divorce referendum, who said that the churches would have to be open to weddings on sunday once divorce was allowed.

i would have thought that it is god who is final judge, and therefore the priest is over stepping his position. Burke personally hasn't had an abortion, and if he feels he is still a catholic, then he should be allowed to take communion and repent his sins as he so wishes. Not very Christian for the priest to be so judgemental.

Every voter who voted for repeal, is as responsible as the minister doing his job. But you know this already.

He used the opportunity of a constituent’s funeral to highlight and publicise the priest’s refusal to give him communion.

This priest refused him before. He knew exactly what would happen. If he really wanted communion he could have gone to any of the other ministers but he was just being deliberately disrespectful.

I’m not saying the priest was right but he should have had more respect for the deceased and his family than to make the occasion about him.

Shame on him.
