Vodafone 3G to close

Apologies for the late reply here but that is most likely how Vodafone have designed it.

WIFI Calling and VoLTE reside in the networks IMS core, moving out of WiFi coverage the IMS core will try hand the call off to the VoLTE network or failing that to the circuit switch network (2/3G), so it's looking for you on their network to hand off the call not on the 3 Ireland network, without an active 4G data session it won't go to VoLTE, next then the CS network if you are reachable, anyway there not internet calls but encrypted like a VPN IPSec tunnel, given its GEO blocked they more than don't allow IMS calls to leave the Vodafone network.

3 on the other hand seem a bit looser in this regard it sounds but again all down to the design engineers and what network security / fraud departments demand, Vodafone are rigid in those areas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,517 ✭✭✭KildareP

As an update to the above:

VoWiFi to VoLTE handoff will still fail on a single SIM iOS device with a Vodafone SIM and mobile data turned off.

VoWiFi to VoLTE handoff will also fail on a dual SIM iOS device, with both SIMs being Vodafone, on whichever SIM that is not set active for mobile data.

VoWiFi to VoLTE handoff works perfectly on an Android device (or, at least, a Google Pixel) with a Vodafone SIM and mobile data turned off for that SIM, for both single SIM and dual SIM scenarios.

So it appears whatever way Vodafone and iOS devices are handling handoff does not work seamlessly on iPhones but does on a Pixel.

Whereas WiFi to VoLTE handoff works perfectly on iOS for both Eir and 3 once you have local 4G/5G coverage to handoff to (since 2G/3G is not as you say packet switched).

This 3g shutdown is mad. One city covered in 10 months 😂. They are probably expanding 5g countrywide now as a priority. Nothing happening in Cork.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8 KubaKLucan

Anyone have any news on this whole shutdown? The Vodafone page hasn't had an update in months and if this article here (https://www.bonkers.ie/blog/broadband-phone/vodafone-to-fully-switch-off-its-3g-network-by-the-end-of-the-year/) is true we should've probably seen a little more progress than just limerick city by now 😂 Has anyone seen any new 5g masts and loss of 3g signal at all? Here in Lucan most of our masts are only 4g not even 4g+ so bit disappointing here. though i have noticed my phone will bounce between E and 4g/5g a lot more now. 3g is still in operation as I do still see it show up, just less often.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 789 ✭✭✭Cork981

For a few days back in September all my connections were going 5G/4G to E but 3G was still available if forced. This was all reverted after a few days and back on 3G.

Most Vodafone masts around Cork and now upgraded to 5G (NR and DSS) behind Eir but ahead of 3 at this stage.

Apparently it was delayed at least around Ringaskiddy in Cork due to some factory using 3G repeaters for coverage around the factory. It was switched back on Apparently they were giving until the end of December to migrate.

Getting that 5mhz block in the 900mhz range broadcasting 4G will be a nice improvement.

Cork and Galway were listed on this page for a few weeks before they were removed.

They have abandoned it I'd say. They seem to be upgrading rural areas instead. Sky mobile was meant to launch on the Vodafone network and that hasn't happened either.

I wouldn't be surprised if Vodafone are gearing up to be taken over or sold off. Reminds me a bit of O2 in their final years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 789 ✭✭✭Cork981

That would be my thinking as well. They’ve sold off Vodafone Spain. Vodafone Ireland is way smaller is comparison and requires a huge investment to upgrade all those legacy wooden pole 3G sites.

Same with Vodafone UK merging with 3.

I can’t see the regulator allowing a Vodafone and 3 merger here in Ireland from a competition point of view that would leave Eir dead in the water without a huge amount of spectrum and site transfers.

Maybe an Eir and Vodafone merger could make sense but I don’t think that’s Xaviers modus operandi.

Perhaps an EE takeover to break into the Irish market….

I'd say they will pull out of Ireland soon. Vodafone network isn't what it used to be. Three have far passed them for stability and reliability

Vodafone still the network of choice for business though. Price doesn't matter as such with most MNC using their services exclusively with masts integrated into their sites.

Denis O'Brien on competition in the telecoms market

He said that regulators, as well as European Commission directions, have been “shocking”.

“Four operators in every country is mental,” he said, of regulatory preferences for multiple operators in each marketplace to provide competition.

“In reality, if you have two mobile operations knocking the sh*t out of each other, that's better than four, under-capexing the market.”

Appears to be a bit pissed-off atm, he's about to exit his his mobile business in the Caribbean

It's true that vodafone lost their magic by a lot. Eir coverage is so much better now, especially in rural conditions. Eir has blown up new mast sites everywhere nationwide recently. Complete speculation, but maybe an eir an vodafone merger if anything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,563 ✭✭✭Micky 32

Feck i hope not, they got me to sign up for another year. Cheaper rate for 6 months. The only reason i stayed with them was because of the upgrade promise.

  • There's no way a merger between any of the 3 remaining networks would be allowed here. It would breech competition law.

If they're going to merge with anyone it'll be an acquisition / merger with a network that's not here already.

A more likely merger would be Vodafone with Virgin Media Ireland, and dropping the Virgin brand.

  • Liberty Global has been toying with joint ventures in the Netherlands with VodafoneZiggo and they’ve begun a collaboration with Vodafone here, opening their cable network to VF, while Siro, which Vodafone is a 50% partner in, is being used to expand VMI’s reach.

The Virgin Media brand is on shakier ground as it’s just licensed by Liberty Global from Branson, like all Virgin brands.

Virgin Media UK is now now a joint venture with O2 (Movistar / Telefonica) and the short lived integration of their Irish and U.K. operations was undone again.

Liberty has always been a branding mess though. They never seem to be able to build a pan European brand and set of products. It seems like none of their brands ever last beyond about 10 years and they seem to keep jumping into rebrands and restructures. It’s hard to keep up with it.

UPC for example looked like it was being built as a pan European brand but then all of a sudden then dismantled it for no particular reason.

I wouldn’t really have many expectations for Liberty to build any kind of strong brand.

All the legacy sites are gonezo. The MNOs are getting out of the towers game. Eir(MMC) sold theirs off in like 2019, VF have a controlling stake in Vantage but let them run it. Cellnex (and their sub Cignal) are hoofing up sites all over the gaff.

Very soon most sites will either be Cellnex or ESB Telecom. And I suspect ESB telecom's pricing makes the MNOs want to move away to cheaper sites.

So the 3g close down seems to have ground to a halt! Uk is progressing as planned maybe a few delays, and news or updates regarding Vodafone Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,409 ✭✭✭Sunny!!

sky mobile launch delayed because of this I'd say maybe until the end of the year. In reality I would say Vodafone are planning of leaving Ireland.

  • They're spending a LOT of money on their fibre broadband product offerings, including a major launch of a new TV service, complete with a ton of advertising. So, I doubt they're in any rush to leave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,563 ✭✭✭Micky 32

I noticed Vodafone have being adding 4G to some of their old 3G poles. I didn’t think that was possible. The one I encountered is transmitting on Band 8 (5mhz).

Looks like they might have done an upgrade in south Drogheda recently. The 4G signal strength seems better and I'm now getting 102 down and 10 up, whereas I was getting about 10 down previously. Not sure about 5G as my plan doesn't support it. I was considering leaving Vodafone and was even trialling GoMo (who couldn't even get me 1 meg down on 4G or 5G at home sometimes!) but this has encouraged me to stay with Vodafone for the time being.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 789 ✭✭✭Cork981

Vodafone 5G really ramping up around Cork City. Travelled around the City today and had 5G pretty much everywhere.

Previously in Ballincollig I got around 30mb download on 4G. Today I got 1300mb download and almost 200mb up. That’s faster than my FTTH connection.

3G was still broadcasting everywhere I checked.

They seem to be doing work in Kildare over the last few weeks.

3G has largely disappeared and the phone now moves around 2G, 4G and 5G.

Now though, where the phone might have previously moved to 3G in areas, it moves to Edge.

Phone calls aren't moving nicely from 4G/5G to 2G, dropping more often than not.

Made worse by the fact that journeys I would have easily had a 4G call the entire length now keeps trying to move down to 2G.

Steaming is difficult to impossible - music apps buffer a lot more while live radio times out every time the network dips to 2G Edge.

Was looking on UK forums where Vodafone UK have just completed 3G switchoff and there's a lot of complaints of similar issues with large pockets of reasonable 4G backed by excellent 3G now relegated to unusable 2G Edge only with no sign of 4G/5G equivalent coverage coming along to replace it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭GIMP

Good to hear your experience in Kildare, in my own area North Dublin 5g has popped up for the first time today but the signal is low 1bar and speeds are slow. We live very close to a 4g enabled mast so interesting to see if they upgraded the mast or not!

  • Moderators, Regional South Moderators Posts: 5,863 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quackster

I've actually noticed this on the train recently in that neck of the woods, more interruptions/buffering when listening to streaming radio due to gaps in the 4G/5G coverage that had previously been covered by 3G.

Perhaps the wrong place to post this, but ill try anyway. Is there still any incompatibility of 5G phones with Vodafone? For example, I'm looking to buy an OPPO Find X3 Pro 5G, would this work with Vodafone on the 5G network? Currently have a OnePlus 7T, which is 4G only, and even VoLTE does not work on this phone with Vodafone, making phonecalls a bit of a pain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,517 ✭✭✭KildareP

Travelling a bit through rural Ireland over Easter - all I can say is Vodafone have really let their network crumble in recent years now that 3G seems to be deprioritised or taken off air. Feck all 5G, very little 4G+ (mostly heavily congested single carrier 4G) and I've never seen as much Edge (or outright No Signal) since the early days of 3 and Meteor.

Meanwhile those two networks are absolutely wiping the floor with Vodafone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,563 ✭✭✭Micky 32

They are taking the piss. They have been adding 4G to those old 3G monopoles. They are transmitting on band 8 from them. The ones i tested for speed are horrendous. 1-2mbs download.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 297 ✭✭dollylama

I believe Vodafone used ISDN circuits as backhaul for some of these 3G poles. Sounds like they replaced the radios but the pole is still on a limited backhaul

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭GIMP

I travelled Dublin to near Fermoy recently, streaming two kids tables was flawless tbf on motorway anyways. Once off motor way it was poor coverage mainly 3g in North Cork county rural area. So 4g isn't deployed in that area!

Yes lots of E1 or ADSL2+ circuits feeding the very rural sites from the Eircell days - great in the days of 2G and 3G and often meant Vodafone reached many areas others couldn't (or wouldn't).

The problem for Vodafone now is Cignal have been closely following the OpenEir and NBI fibre to the premises rollout nationally and once full fibre rolls into a given area, one or more of their monopoles appear soon after, and you'll see an Eir or Three (often both) cell site spring up on it soon again after that. Whereas Vodafone appear to avoid using Cignal, probably seeing them as a competitor to their own sister tower company, Vantage.

I'm surprised they're putting 4G onto such sites though without upgrading the backhaul first - traditionally as I understand it they kept sites tied to 3G only because people naturally expected 3G to be slow anyway, and bandwidth starved 4G/5G cells would skew their respective rankings on Ookla and nPerf and the likes (which is how they've managed to stay ranking so highly despite 3 and Eir long outpacing them in coverage terms).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,169 ✭✭✭✭ED E

If glass isnt available I really doubt they're re-building a site. Be far better off finding the local ESB site to rig up. None of the new monopoles Ive spotted have point to point (some old ones do).

Newer update, First time Dublin has been mentioned,........

Following the successful switch off in Limerick city we will continue to upgrade the network on a phased basis, starting with the cities of Cork, Galway and Dublin in June 2024.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 789 ✭✭✭Cork981

They’ve been talking about switching off Cork since September last year.

Apparently some pharma factory in Ringnaskiddy had a huge issue with the 3G switch off and they had to roll back.

To be fair Vodafone have pretty much upgraded all sites to 5G NR or DSS around the city and outskirts at this stage.

I wouldn't hold my breath on even that date being met! The network is a mess in Kildare for the last number of months with little sign of improvement happening.

They have put a number of planning applications into SDCC, Fingal and KCC (under their tower division "Vantage Towers") around areas that are now left largely to 2G only due to having no 4G and where the nearest mast infrastructure is too far to provide 4G and 5G denisty - but are sticking with large, bulky lattice towers for the most part, which are having a very hard time getting past the local authorities and many attracting significant volumes of objections.

Compare this to Cignal/On Tower who have seen Eir and Three add hundreds of new sites to their respective networks using monopoles with near-zero rumblings or pushback.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,517 ✭✭✭KildareP

Back on the road again around Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny the past week, and a lot of changes apparent.

5G much more prevalent now, and 4G is the minimum in a lot more areas. Very little EDGE compared to previous but that seems to be because 3G looks to have been readded to the automatic selection again in the more fringe areas.

Still a good few blackspots as before where both 3 and Eir maintained service. Indoor coverage particularly is still quite poor, the 3/Eir move towards monopoles in the rural towns and village centres is really putting them ahead of Vodafone by a good margin.

Promising signs though - added to the fact that Vantage (Vodafone tower division) are extremely busy with almost every local authority planning section countywide at the moment putting in for new towers.

I noticed in the last few weeks that Vodafone pushed a carrier file update to iPhones to remove the VoLTE option, it’s now always enabled with no option to disable it. I suppose it makes sense so you don’t fall back to 2G when making calls.
