But that's not a question of fitness, that's just managing his workload and not flogging him and is all about injury prevention!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Apples and Oranges….Don't play him to prevent him getting injured…..Play and he gets injured….

Anyway, my point stands. Throughout his career he can't be relyed on to play a full test series. Old father time waits for nobody and he will never be able to play 4/5 consecutive test matches. He should do what Jimmy did, and pick one or the other to prolong his career imo

He has been toothless…. He’s not taking wickets, fitness is an issue. He has a left knee injury that has been well documented. And only played in 60% of those tests that you mention.

“Comeback from knee injury”…. That my friend is a fitness issue.

It seems England have won this match after 4 overs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,407 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

going well, 176 runs on the board after 33 is quite decent.

A couple of bad drops and as I’m typing another, Holder ! Not a difficult chance. Hmmmmmm. England could have been 5/6 down.

Shamar Joseph goes off the field injured mid over… looks like he might be done. Moving very gingerly and a significant grimace.

All WI need is to be behind the 8 ball on the scoreboard but a bowler down and potentially another with a niggle.

Suggestions that England were a bit short of a par score today, but against this WI side it's highly unlikely to make a huge difference.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

India or Australia you’d say they might be short. Soft dismissals and dropped catches 500 looked on but should be plenty. Stuart Broad was talking all day about how day two and three are best for batting at Trent Bridge so if West Indies can get a start and a bit of luck they might take it into day four or five.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

Hopefully the WI can bat well and at least make a game of it!

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,407 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

poor session from WI. Getting to lunch 3 wickets down and the two batsmen at the crease with single digit scores so far.

A lot of poor / high risk cricket…. The manner of the dismissals…. Just careless, high risk batting.

Kirk McKenzie just minutes before lunch, crazy shot selection given the match situation.

Poor from WI after a good first hour. Seems a decent pitch for batting.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,407 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

good comeback though. England will be frustrated with the post lunch bowling performance. Too short, too samey.

No slips. Relying on a mistake.

it seems that too much of T20 cricket is dictating how batsmen get out these days in test cricket, patient technical batting has been replaced by forced hitting mostly - just my observation off course - tho it has made test match draws a thing of the past which is a positive

  • Registered Users Posts: 246 ✭✭nice bit of green

Delighted they’re making a game of it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

WI response is excellent in the afternoon. Great to see Hodge get to 100.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,407 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

England after day one would have been very very relaxed and calm back in their hotel. Be a nervy one for them this evening. Need a big shift from their bowlers in the morning. At this stage a WI innings lead of some sort is a reasonable possibility… even probability the way they are going…two well set batsmen, 5 wickets remaining, docile pitch and a tired, not majorly effective England bowling unit.

Mad that 767 runs were scored over two days play. That’s even with I think 7.3 overs play missing over two days.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,407 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

so WI take the lead, some quite naive, dumb ass bowling by England.

Proof, the WI number 11 hitting Wood for 6. Same number 11 is 25 not out from 18 deliveries and hitting boundaries as Wood and co bowl half arsed half trackers.

Umpires allowing drinks onto the field for the WI batsmen, no scheduled drinks break…..6 balls later they want a glove change and more drinks come out, umpires = 🤡

Root bowling, England need the wicket, 18 off his last over.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Enjoyable day again. England were rocking a bit when Brook came out but him and Root have them on top again.

What's going on with the Duke ball? Farcical now needing to be constantly changed. And each ball plays different and often brings a wicket. Its the most bowler friendly ball but for whatever reason is no where near lasting 80 overs.

Test match still well poised for the final 2 days. The pitch looks pretty good still and shows no sign of deteriorating and so England will probably need a lead of 400 which they should reach before tea tomorrow if they bat at their current rate and continue to bat sensibly. Harry Brook is a seriously good player that really will be the backbone of this side for years to come.

Good test match even if both sides look flawed in so many ways.

Poor morning by England, yes they scored 100 runs, entertained, amassed a 307 lead but 3 of the absolute cheapest give away wickets you’ll ever see in that session. Brook will be annoyed by the manner of his dismissal . No foot movement just casually swiping at the ball.

Stokes gone just before lunch. Caught at deep third man, a bit of a careless shot, he has to know that there is a fielder there so what he’s doing going arial… match situation didn’t warrant that at all.

Smith with just a lazy careless prod and edges an average delivery…..a 400 lead looked a formality, but they might be glad of 350 now.

Thought in the spirit of 'bazball' England would have declared by now! 🙂 lead will be around 400, interesting to see WI approach and if they'll chase or play for a draw to keep the series alive.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Just about to say the chase couldn't have started much better for the West Indies and Louis nicks off to the keeper off Woakes. Drinks break with another assist. West Indies need another partnership now to keep the pressure on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

England could win tonight at this rate!

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,407 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

77/4 I’d say that’s all she wrote for WI, some concerned faces in their dressing room. They probably know it too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

Dismal collapse by the WI after such a fine first innings performance.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Still, much better from the West Indies. England had to work hard for it unlike Lord's.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,407 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Shaoib Bashir 5/41 from 11.1. Guy is 20 years old….Fantastic stuff.

Looks like a very cool customer. Doesn’t go nuts when he takes a wicket, doesn’t spit the dummy if he bowls a loose over… a focused demeanour.

Harry Brook though, jeeeez he could go down as one of the greats..25 years old and….

    13 tests

    4 hundreds / 8 fifties

    Averages 61.55 / Strike rate 91.11

    😵‍💫

I’d say England unless they make a load of changes will win the 3rd test comfortably. West Indies have been absolutely hammered in both tests.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Big tick for England Bashir producing in the fourth innings and winning a game. He does seem very mature for his age and inexperience. Atkinson too is very calm and almost robotic.

I guess they'll play Pennington next week and hope he can hit the ground running too. I know it Iirks some people how focused England are on the Ashes but these decisions are only being made because of it in 18 months. Leach, Jimmy, Foakes and Bairstow would probably be playing here without it.
