Club raffles for all ireland tickets

Some amount of these draws popping up here in Galway this last few days with some clubs being gifted the tickets by members and they raffling them off with people being encouraged to buy tickets in bulk with reductions if you buy €50 worth etc. I know its difficult for clubs to fundraise etc. but I don't think preying on fans desperate for all Ireland tickets is the way to do it. Think it's something the gaa should clamp down on and leave the clubs to disperse their allocations to members. Interested in what others thoughts are on this .

Been happening for years - see it a lot in Limerick over the last few years Golden Ticket mentality creates opportunities I don't hold the clubs at fault it's time people looked towards HQ.

The reality is clubs and county boards aren't funded enough by the corporate side of GAA. County Boards scrambling to fundraise to transport and accommodation for players is a disgrace surely head office could organise this for every team in the final. 100 euro a ticket and the 'talent' don't get paid and have to fundraise for all their own expenses.

I see a lad named Peter pulling his own number out of the cup for a ticket on a WhatsApp this evening.

Congratulations Peter, enjoy the day out.

Yeh I 100% wouldn’t blame the clubs taking the opportunity to raise some (probably) much needed funds.

If it’s allowed, then anything goes, although I obviously feel bad for genuine fans that would happily pay full price for the tickets. It must be highly frustrating to see tickets going to clubs that could go out to their members but are raffling them off instead.

The distribution needs a discussion. Every club in the country getting tickets needs to be looked at. The counties in the final should get more of a share.

I see today it's I've hurling tickets to swap for football - so club members in the football counties snapped up hurling tickets to barter.

It's been years since I seen such a shortage. Obviously the novelty factor of new teams has created that but it's also highlighted a few issues with allocation and the exploitation of fans (not just the club draws but in other ways too)

Its been on the go a number of years now but they all copying each other now I see from neighbouring clubs.i would have my doubts over the transparency of some of these draws where could have similar draws to peter and the refs draw up in louth last week🤣

You'd have to remember too though that there'll be a lot of the "prawn sandwich brigade' getting tickets and it'll be the only game they were at all season.

The likes of the refs and Peter should be given priority over the best salesman or one the sponsors kids with a stupid name like Fíacra.

I suppose the one issue I'd have with this is that clubs tend to lean heavily on people who are already contributing a lot.

You'll have a parent who is an underage coach - they have to pay full adult fees in the first place for the privilege of giving up their time three times a week to put cones out , and direct kids around a pitch.

And honestly, it is like a second job, its a huge time commitment.

And then on top of that, they'll be told - can you go out now and sell these tickets to all the parents in your group, and while your at it, buy some tickets yourself.

And some clubs will even be publishing league tables of which teams have sold the most tickets.

Clubs need to be careful not to bite the hand that feeds.

What's wrong with that though? It's literally the same for every Sport when you get to the finals. The GAA isn't any different here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,232 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

What would solve a lot of this is stop giving so many final tickets to counties not involved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,874 ✭✭✭Sunny Disposition

The system is not working. And it is also being abused by clubs with these raffles.

The worst of all is four tickets being AUCTIONED for Meath camogie. Bidding is at €1,000 with two days to go.

I hate this kind of stuff. Glorified touting, so so wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 950 ✭✭✭Stationmaster

I disagree. The majority of tickets are given out to clubs and season ticket holders - that will look after 99% of any genuine fans from either of the competing counties.

All Ireland Final day is also a very special day for people who love their sport. If you're a club official up in Antrim for example, who puts hours and hours into your club, admin, coaching etc and your club gets a couple of tickets for the final then you deserve to go as much as anyone. For years, I went to every final no matter who was in it - and I'd defy anyone to tell me I didn't deserve to be there. It was like Christmas for me every year - meet lads from every county, and some from abroad, and talk hurling all weekend long.

The season ticket is there also for anyone who goes to every county game but mightn't be involved much in a club for whatever reason.

If the members of a club feel they need or want to raffle their tickets then more power to them. Fundraising and running a club is getting harder and harder each year. There is no money drip fed down to clubs from the top for day to day running so each club must do what they need to do.

I'm going Sunday, with the rest of the family, and I can't wait!

What amount of tickets are actually given to the clubs?

Is it 2 per club? And something like 4000 clubs in the country? So maybe 8000?

Is those numbers are correct, that's 10% of the stadium, not excessive imho. If it was Uefa, they'd have 40,000 taken and let the 2 counties split the remaining 40,000!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 950 ✭✭✭Stationmaster

It's a bit more to be honest though I wouldn't have the exact figures. I know of a dual club in clare that gets 12 usually and an intermediate hurling only club that get 5 so it would probably be a lot more than the 8k you mentioned.

Clare and Cork got 16k each so far this year - that doesn't include season tickets.

I don't blame clubs for doing this. It's a great way of fundraising and with online sales the counties in the final can be targeting. With outside coaches, S&C coaches, gym's etc it is costing clubs huge amounts of money to survive compared to previous generations. Lack of volunteerism is also a problem and raffles like this are quick wins for clubs compared to other fundraisers i.e clubs have access to tickets and their is huge demand. It is the same people doing everything in clubs i.e the chairman or secretary is also a head coach and has to organise fundraising.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,696 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Which of these allocations included my local GAA club? Top one I assume?

And how many past presidents has there been in the GAA? Splitting 771 between them, seems excessive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,076 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Where did you get that list? It is really interesting to see the breakdown.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 950 ✭✭✭Stationmaster

Yea, your local club is in the 'county allocations' number. It's a pity that's not split into competing and non competing counties although, as I mentioned earlier, 32k has gone to clare and cork combined this year so far (sometimes a second allocation can go out on the week before if not all the non competing allocations are taken up).

The president changes every 3 years I think so they obviously seem to be well looked after!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭HurlingBoy

I believe that all past All Ireland Senior winners are entitled to tickets. Is this included in County Allocations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 950 ✭✭✭Stationmaster

Yea, think so although it might still be decided county by county but I think most counties do it - current county players also are entitled to 2 each - the county boards would give these out from their allocations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,696 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

There's a lot of chipping away at the totals so.

So many little allocations all add up.

Would you happen to know how many tickets each of the 30 players playing in the final are entitled to each, and dare I ask, do they have to pay for them?

    Former GAA Presidents (771)

Strange one..there have been less than 40 Presidents and a fair chunk of them have sadly suffled off this mortal coil a long time. Even if their spouse/kids get 2 , it is a huge amount

...actually maybe this is for all county board presidents which would make more sense

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 950 ✭✭✭Stationmaster

It would vary from county to county. They'd usually get a few free and then the option to buy some more - I'd imagine 10/12 but I'm not sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,485 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

That allocation breakdown reaks of the John and his wife kitty the local bank manger and school teacher who have no intrest in Hurling not been at the a game all year will be in the premium level skulking pints etc

Always tickets available but more hardship than others who effectively be 'handed them'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 554 ✭✭✭Dr Karl

No mention of the politicians who get tickets. Why do Sports Ireland get so many? Are there not rules in place about civil and public servants receiving gifts or goods and services in kind?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,277 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Or if the groups that get tickets keep them then all groups who are involved in the association at grassroots are represented on biggest days. Which do you have issue with?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,485 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Why can't they allocate the final tickets like the other games ??

No doubt 'parties/sponsors' etc are still getting tickets for other championship games along with the people who have the Croke Park premium/corporate box's

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,911 ✭✭✭kala85

Lads anyone who is a genuine follower should have or get a season ticket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,485 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Definitely but then we have the stubborn 'cash only' types who feel it's 'discrimination' etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭rolling boh

Most folk who bleat about not getting tickets complain all year about prices so don't go matches then come the final they cry foul .I do think the bulk should go to the counties involved though .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,500 ✭✭✭✭cson

The season ticket for both codes is (was) open to any genuine fan in Galway. No need to worry about a Final ticket then. Only 19k showed up to the Connacht Final this year and that includes Mayo fans who tend to travel well. We only had 7k for a crucial group game v Derry.

I believe only Dublin, Mayo & the Limerick hurlers have season ticket waiting lists as of right now.

End of the day, if you're a genuine fan you can make sure you have access to a ticket, this cribbing about clubs making a few quid via lotteries because some Johnny Come Lately who went to the QF/SF now thinks he deserves one is kind of embarrassing tbh. Don't come at me with the cost of it either, I bet anyone cribbing about that spends more down the pub in a month than the entire season ticket costs. Either way, its well within the budget of anyone making even minimum wage in Ireland tbh.

We get the same garbage every year about AIF tickets, fact of the matter is if you really want to make sure you're there you either do sufficient volunteering with your club to get to the top of that list or you cut out the middleman and get a season ticket. End of story.

I know for a fact that one former president ticket makes it way down the chain.

I've held it in my hand myself, it wasn't for me but I was the middle man to transport it to it's recipient.

I don't get all the drama about "real fans" not being able to get tickets.

If you are indeed a "real fan" you will likely have a season ticket, or have a chance through your club, or just know enough like minded "real fans" from other counties that you can start networking for a ticket.

My county has played in 11 finals in my lifetime that I could have attended and I never had a problem getting a ticket for any of them.

It's all about doing the donkey work, making calls, asking people, sticking your neck out there.

I've got tickets from title sponsors because they did some work with the company I work with, I made sure my manager knew that I was looking for tickets and he made sure the account manager knew I was looking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,007 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

That’s bullshit and completely unfair. Season ticket is horrible value. The only time there’s value to it is if your team gets to an All-Ireland final as it guarantees your ticket.

Season tickets will be gone in the next few years. GAA don’t like it and have stripped it back year-on-year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,911 ✭✭✭kala85

    It's not.

Yes I agree the value of the season ticket has diminished from what it used to be. It costs 140e and you get all the league matches for free and kids season ticket is 30.

We have all these fans saying I was at this match or that match or went to the semi final and now cannot get a ticket.

If you are genuinely going to all those games it makes no sense not to get a season ticket. Then if you get to a final, your guaranteed your ticket. End of. It's a great system but it would be better if they gave it a small bit more value included in it.

You are guaranteed a ticket all the way through the championship.

The gaa want to phase it out as it takes up tickets but it's a great system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,007 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

You’re not getting the league tickets for free. You’re paying for them with the cost of the season ticket!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 943 ✭✭✭DiscoStew

The former presidents allocation figure above was clarified online as including Ard Chomarla members also. I’m presuming that would include past and present members so would add up. The figure does seem high however.

The schools figure is usually a certain number of tickets to each school participating in GAA. Generally teachers coaching GAA would be given preference here when applying although I believe any staff member can apply.

Surely Louth GAA and or Croke Park will not allow that Louth referees draw to stand. Either a redraw under the control of board / CP or redistribute those tickets. It is a blatant case of fraud.

If you actually are a true supporter and go to the league matches, then the whole thing is cost neutral.

20 euro for division one league game and season ticket is 140 so you get 7 league games if u get to knock out stage of the league.

Season ticket is a great job but lads don't want to spend the money unless they think they will get the options to buy the all Ireland ticket which is the wrong way to look at it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,007 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

F off out of that, seriously. So you’re not a true supporter if you don’t go to league matches?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,576 ✭✭✭Rows Grower

Yeah for some reason I seem to remember reading some time back that TD's were given tickets for the All Ireland Finals. Maybe it was around the time Danny Healy Rae was pictured asleep at a hurling final.

To be fair it's not always easy to attend all league games for time and cost reasons .Not everyone can travel to the far side or end of the country for a league game.Think you have to be prepared to take a bit if a hit in order to be in a scheme for All Ire tickets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,368 ✭✭✭threeball

Theres over 700 tickets going to past presidents. Thats a joke right there. Over 70k worth of tickets distributed between what, 7 or 8 people?

The vast majority of tickets should go to the counties involved. It takes away from the occasion when you have people sitting the the stands who have little to no interest in being there. I have been sitting beside people in the past who were reading books or scrolling through their instagram/facebook. They were obviously brought "up to Dublin" for the weekend by a partner who wanted to attend the game and they ended up tagging along rather than sitting in the hotel until they got back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,277 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Very hard to say these people have very little interest in being there and gaa presidents with no interest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,244 ✭✭✭Guffy

The last raffle I was at was very interesting, because the people who ran the raffle, actually won it! So it's not unusual for that to happen, now and again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,019 ✭✭✭I see sheep

Does every club in Ireland definitely get a couple of tickets or is it just down to the county boards, i.e. would they not give some clubs any?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,911 ✭✭✭kala85

Look the season ticket suits some and not others.

I think it's a good scheme albeit the benefits have lessened a bit in recent years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,368 ✭✭✭threeball

Its pretty easy to say as they weren't even watching the game
