I remember reading several months ago that Biden might pick a different running mate, such was the disregard for Harris. So, I don't know how the Democratic party will square the circle that makes her electable as the main candidate.

Presuming Biden steps back shortly and the Democrats have an open vote at convention, wouldn't she be easily beaten by Newsome, Whitmer or A.N Other?

Or maybe they should try Oprah? I'm sure she could end both the Ukraine war and solve the Middle East in one day

I think it likely that if in fact Biden steps back, at the convention there's no opposition to Harris. The Democratic party knows its WH and downballot chances will hang by a thread as soon as Biden decides to run, and the last thing they need is a nasty nomination event with hard feelings left over.

Of course, the Democrats are the party of shooting themselves in the foot, though.

Of the names being thrown about for a new candidate, Michelle Obama is the only one who seems like she might win, the way things are right now.

I had thought Newsom seemed like a contender. But part of that was just being tall. Trump looks somewhat diminutive beside him. (This isn't nonsense - the taller candidate usually wins, and I think Trump's ability to dominate people appeals to a lot of people.)

However, Trumps belligerent reaction to a bullet going through his ear, along with the most iconic, pseudo-revolutionary, movie poster like photo means he is out-machoing anyone right now. So a different tack is needed.

In a poll about potential democrat candidates before the debate and the shooting, Michelle Obama was the only person who was projected to beat Trump. I still think she would have a good chance now. I don't think others would. I think this is possibly the thoughts of many in the democratic party. If so, the question is how to get her to step up.

I guess it would also be a snub to Harris. But it would be the difference between fielding a reasonable candidate and trying to win.

Maybe the Dems can do another Obama and find Arnie a US birth cert. ! Lol!

    He's a registered Republican!

Though, he meets the age criteria - sadly, Arnie's old, 76.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,419 ✭✭✭Silentcorner

That will actually suit them, what we do know is, the media will do absolutely no vetting of the candidate, we'll all be told how amazing and fresh this new candidate is…how energized it#s made the whole party…etc etc Goebbles himself would be proud (a bit like how they managed to avoid Bidens state over the last few years)…I remember reading an article in Time magazine about that election denier Stacy Abrahams, you'd swear she could levitate after reading it!!!

If they had any sense, there'd be a gentlemen's agreement that whoever runs would have a positive campaign and don't disparage their opponents. Open vote at convention and complete unity behind the winning candidate.

I still think this election is winnable for the Democrats but they really have to put their election engine in high gear and drive it hard. Trump and Vance on the same ticket will polarise a lot of undecideds on election day. A decent candidate with a unified party and message should put up a good fight.

Vance will do a Lance Vance at the first opportunity, expect the knife in the back to come quick if Trump starts doddering during his second term.

    🙈🙉🙊

The alternative is clearly worse though. Biden is clearly in fairly rapid decline and many suspect he probably has Parkinson's. It's unlikely he could even finish out his term if elected.

Obama didn't say he's senile... I think most of us have simply recognised he's not suited to another 4 years. I'd say his tenure as president will overall be viewed rather positively though.

If this continuing war in the ME doesn't escalate

Biden administration keeping it going with weapons supplies

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,483 ✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

That is a mistake. Israel have enough weapons. Its very bad optics for Biden to be supplying more.

Goes back to what I said previously. There should have been a planned handover of power to someone for the past year or two. Get them the exposure they needed on a national level.

Now it's panic stations as the Democrats now know the Biden cannot win.

They spent too long worrying about Trump than looking at their own patch.

Not a reliable source obviously, but judging from Biden’s behaviour I wouldn’t be surprised if true. Biden part starts at 3:20

Will be interesting to see the administrations reaction to the ICJ ruling just announced concerning the middle east question.

You are right, but we are where we are

Best we can hope for now is that

Biden goes, Harris becomes president for few months, open races are held at the D convention and any primaries are rushed, money is moved to whoever is nominated and all democrats fall behind the new candidate (who I hope is not Harris)

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,631 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Biden doesn't need to resign from the Presidency to drop out of the race though. He just needs to announce he is no longer seeking the nomination, but could still stay on as President until January 2025 (doing that would have little impact on the Democrats selecting their new candidate…..LBJ for example chose not to go forward for a second term in 1968).

  • Registered Users Posts: 100 ✭✭thatsdaft

I know, I’m just thinking how he could handle and placate the Harris supporters who seem more interested in her running (even tho she polls even worse than Biden) than democrats wining the election

I think he remaining as President could work in her favour - but he would really have to endorse her. It would look bad if she went forward for the nomination seemingly without his backing and support.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,611 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

As I read online, Joe should step down and Harris then becomes the 47th president. It'll ruin all Trump's merch....

IMHO Buttigeg offers little. He is from Indiana which is hardcore Republican so he doesn't even offer his own state. Going with Whitmer offers them a good chance at winning Michigan a key battle ground state.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,416 ✭✭✭✭Water John

I'd be quite happy with Whitmer. Just wondering would be a step too far, (two women) for some Americans. Then for those, one woman is probably one too many.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,695 ✭✭✭eire4

Well for some yes sure but the Mysoginists are already voting Republican anyway so I don't see it as an issue. Regardless IMHO the key for the Democrats is they pick a VP who can deliver a state they need and Whitmer in Michigan seems the best fit in that regard.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,550 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Of course, this has nothing to do with that though.

Totally- 100% - I’ve experienced the exact same over the last week- posts reported and nothing done - a thread opened in feedback and nothing done - thread is a cesspit of trolls -I wouldn’t bother using your energy- the degenerates aren’t up for discussion just abuse - they’ll be praising Trump in November when he wins.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,808 ✭✭✭Ahwell

Ah come on, that Parkinson thing was a rumour debunked by his own doctor. I personally don't mind who beats Trump as long as somebody does, but I see no evidence that Harris would get a big bump as a presidential candidate just because she's not Joe Biden. Newson comes with a whole lot of baggage. Not being in the US I don't know who else would have the kind of name recognition to be able to jump in to the race at this stage. It's a gamble being mostly based on polls that proved to be very unreliable in the recent past. Polls are a snapshot in time anyway, they are not good indicators of what's going to happen in 3 months time.

very satisfying, what living in a bubble can to you, anyone that had a range of sources knew there were problems with Biden for the last couple of years and that the media were covering it up directly to your face. the gaslighting was mental but following the story from that point of view was the most interesting. the "two movies one screen" has been the most interesting phenomena. Makes you wonder was the news ever real?
