Surprised that they haven't pushed the Republic Of Ireland games to VM1 this weekend, they'd be only displacing some ITV gameshow repeats anyway. Looks like they'll be going straight into the England and Brazil friendly straight after on VM2 too, so very little time for reaction.

This is the first ROI game shown live on the station since 7th Feb 2007 - when Stephen Ireland scored a last gasp goal to secure a 2-1 win away to San Marino. It's the also the first live game ever shown where ROI are at home.

The success of ROI live on TV3 hasn't been great, albeit the games they have were always in away matches.

    • 2007-02-07: UEFA Euro Qualifier 2008: San Marino 1 v 2 ROI
    • 2006-10-07: UEFA Euro Qualifier 2008: Cyprus 5 v 2 ROI
    • 1999-10-09: UEFA Euro Qualifier 2000: Macedonia 1 v 1 Republic Of Ireland
    • 1999-09-08: UEFA Euro Qualifier 2000: Malta 2 v 3 Republic Of Ireland
    • 1999-09-04: UEFA Euro Qualifier 2000: Croatia 1 v 0 Republic Of Ireland
    • 1998-11-18: UEFA Euro Qualifier 2000: Yugoslavia 1 v 0 Republic Of Ireland

From 2002-2006, during that controversial deal which saw Sky taking all ROI live home matches (with RTE regaining most of the competitive matches due to government pressure on the FAI), TV3 showed all matches in a delayed full version later that night.

Since 2018, they've showed full delayed ROI matches - in friendlies, Nations League and Euro & World Cup qualifiers.

Ah don't be posting that Cyprus Match details. We've enough on our plates as it is.

Although it's been hidden away in the early morning - VM3 broadcast the 2 and half hour of The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebration from May 2022. They had it scheduled for a 3pm Sunday slot a few weeks ago too. And they are repeating it on Monday ay 4:30am again.

What an odd thing to show. They didn't even show it originally when it aired in 2022. Also a note that this is the first showing of Philip Schofield on the channel since his fall-out in May 2023. VMTV stopped showing 5 Gold Rings, The Cube and Schofield's South African Adventure at that time too.

Can you explain the sentence 'They didn't even show it originally when it aired in 2022'? Seems an oxymoron to me. If it was aired it must have been shown.

thats a nice tagline... I suppose in their eyes they are a full service PSB....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭iseegirls

Apologies, yes ITV produced and broadcast it in 2022, but none of the VM channels aired it at the time. Last week would have been the first time that Virgin Media showed it.

Just watching the Ireland match on VM Two and they mentioned that the England were 1-0 down, and that it's on VM More. Flicked over and the EPG listings have Monster Jam. How can VM not update their listings for their own channels on their own TV platform. Mind boggles 🙄

Their champion league listings are invariably wrongmatch, match already played or for matches on the next day. Bizarre.

  • Registered Users Posts: 416 ✭✭Leonita

The whole virgin media televsion operation is at best amateur. There is absolutely no need for 4 channels that are full of repeats constantly. They try to emulate ITV with their version of Ireland Am and the six o clock show but fail miserably. Everything else is just a constant loop of repeats. How they are getting away with it is beyond me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,957 ✭✭✭JDxtra

The focus is on a few home made shows, the big shows from ITV and some live sports events - everything else in the schedule (all channels) is the cheapest repeatable rubbish they have the rights to. Irrelevant to them if anyone watches it or not. In fact, they'd probably be surprised if anyone does.

It is what it is. Just don't watch it and move on with life. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,568 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Ah but how would be discuss Irish Broadcasting.

TV3/VMTV have been at this for 25 years, they aren't going to stop now.

The newish head of VM has written to Minister Martin wanting 30 million per year from the licence fee🤦

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 909 ✭✭✭decor58

The 30 million is probably to go HD on Saorview, considering that TG4 got extra funding and that sd is looking more and more outdated. How much are they getting at the moment though CnM to fund programmes and how much are the extra ad minutes worth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,164 ✭✭✭deezell

VM fully HD in terms of output, going HD on Saorview is a notional cost for spare mux bandwidth, its sitting there doing nothing anyway, just streaming test cards. 2RN aka RTENL are not getting any more takers after Sky news and the other oddball channel. There isn't 30M in revenue to be had from the spare bw, thats for sure. Much more likely they're seeking the money for PSB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,568 ✭✭✭RoTelly

What kind of PSB? Extra to what they currently provide or to pay for what they currently provide. 30M is 20% of the licence fee in a normal year. VMTV is a multimillion euro company, surely it should be providing something toward PSB as Telco.

I don't know what they want it for, maybe OB from junior sport matches, cycling, horse racing from tiny courses. Coverage of local events? Maybe cheap home produced TV, drama, non fiction stuff like fixy uppy programs. Sure no harm in asking, God loves a tryer!

Yep, €30m for "PSB" obligations, which I'd say is very loosely defined (endless reruns of Ireland internationals?) Some balls to ask for 30M, with the license take down by10M, but, If you don't ask, you won't receive.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,994 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

They won’t recieve either way, not without a competitive process, the Government can’t just hand out a cheque for that kind of money just because someone wrote them a letter and asked for it.

VMTV know this; to be fair, this is about stirring up some publicity and getting a spake in for what the future of the license fee might look like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭iseegirls

VM certainly getting their money's worth out of their miniscule film rights package. The Punisher (edited, thanks JDextra pointing out) on VM1 tonight becomes the joint most aired film on the broadcasters history (incl. TV3, 3e). It sits along side 1995's Circle Of Friends as being shown 30 times across the channels.

It's been shown between the starting time of 9pm-10pm 22 times to illustrate the prominence VM gives it, which is quite something for a film that is pretty mediocre.

That's actually hillarious (note: movie title is "The Punisher").

Virgin Media One and Virgin Media Two are HD only now on Sky. Both SD versions were removed today, following TG4, who closed their SD version last Monday

    https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/What-s-On/Changes-to-the-Sky-TV-Guide-April-2024/td-p/4600061

Virgin Media Three is currently SD only on Sky, while Virgin Media Four is HD only

Presumably VM Three HD will launch soon on Sky

Virgin are going to get a direct slice of whatever replaces the licence fee according to the front page of yesterday's daily mail

I haven’t seen the article but surely that would be illegal state aid unless on the basis of a competitive tender.

If that happens then they need to be subject to the same conditions as RTÉ such as revealing salaries and been accountable to the Public Accounts Committee.

Anyone know of VM1 showed Emmerdale tonight at 8.30? It was cancelled on ITV1 because of the extra time in football and extended election news coverage.

It seems to be there on the VM Player, but looking back at the schedule on the Virgin TV app and epg is showing celebrity catchphrase between 7.30 to 9.

Yes I think they showed it - an Emmerdale epsiode recorded on my Sky+ anyway.

Anyone else missing some music channels all of a sudden. Between 708 and 716

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,568 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I believe Channel 4 are closing their music channels. Looks like the Box set of channels closed on 30th of June 2024.

Channel 4's portfolio of music channels – The Box, Magic, Kiss, 4Music and Kerrang! closed on 30 June 2024

Looks like they showed the new episode, and they also repeated it on VM3 last night and in their omnibus today. Strange that ITV/UTV allowed them to do that. And will be interesting if VM still show the same episode in ITV move Fridays episode into Monday's slot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭iseegirls

Slow news week, so here's a 'stat of the week'.

SeaChange (Australian TV Series) first shown on TV3 in 1999. They showed S1 and S2 at 7pm on a Sunday, with no repeats.

For those waiting for a new series (Series 4), VM1 have it on Friday 26th July at 1am. I make it as 9,105 days wait between airdates.

VM3 and VM4 have shown series 1-4 three times since January 2022, but that is still a mighty gap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,164 ✭✭✭deezell

On the VM1 news there, they referred to the woman's International as taking place in 'Pairc ui Caoimh', if I spelled that right. No 'Supervalu PuC'. Maybe its because its not a GAA match? Rte 1.00 news done the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,922 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Maybe because it's a UEFA match they're not allowed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,164 ✭✭✭deezell

Yea, like the Aviva was the 'Dublin stadium' or something for the Europa league Final. ( I blagged a ticket for that, what an atmosphere and night).

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,994 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

RTE referred to it as it sponsored name this morning on Morning Ireland. I do see on the FAI and UEFA websites it’s not referred to with reference to its sponsors but I know UEFA don’t have any problem normally with the Aviva Stadium being referred to by its sponsored name, other than when it’s hosted the Europa League final and when it would have hosted matches in Euro 2020 (which ultimately didn’t happen because of COVID).

TLDR: I wouldn’t read much into it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,568 ✭✭✭RoTelly

It funny that if it is the case that certain sporting organisation don't allow for the stadiums to be named that they don't revert to the original name, why not call Aviva, "Lansdowne Road"?

On this evening's 5.30 news on VM1, one of their reporters was excitedly doing a report on the 105th birthday of former WW2 RAF pilot, Dubliner John Hemingway, who fought in the battle of Britain. The silly twat stated breathlessly that he was shot down twice in his " jet-fighter, or 'fighter jet', I can't remember which as I was so incensed at the lazy reporting and lack of editorial that permits such a glaring error. Seriously, a fighter jet in 1940? When all the trains ran on steam. I suppose living in lala land is responsible for this kind of innacurate shyte.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,994 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

They might not be that far off, the RAF and USAF had both introduced their first jets before the end of the war, if maybe not quite in 1940. And there was electric traction in use on London Underground as early as 1890, and diesel locomotives were invented decades before the war, if not in widespread use.

Look, my point really is: I think we are going to be all night here if we’re going to be spending our time pointing out every little factual error made in the media (and there are lots, every day, and by no means is VMTV the only offender).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,164 ✭✭✭deezell

All that is true, except the idea of a functioning deployed fighter jet in 1940, no more than they had large scale deployment of diesel engines, trains or otherwise. My point is, If we allow history to be presented by tictokkers, then there is no hope for the accuracy of journalism.

It's just a Transponder change for Virgin Media Three (SD)

There's no tests for VM Three HD and I would put my money on it never launching on Sky (well, within the next 12 months anyway 😀)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,164 ✭✭✭deezell

VM1 do it again. The likeable weatherman Derek gave the forecast on location yesterday, introducing himself as being at the 'Point Depot', and signing off as being at the 'Point Arena', as the camera panned out and just briefly showed part of the '3 Arena' signage. The weather is sponsored by Chill insurance, but it seems petty to not state accuurately where you are, unless '3' were asked for and refused to make a contribution.

THERE'S NO POINT IN THE 3 ARENA?
