    Tough choice.

    On baby seat alone, Seal.
for all the tuff you need when going away, M3. after that it’s all subjective to styling etc

I'd also factor in the 7k+ price difference and much higher APR if financing

Just peachy to know that I'm sharing the road with even more idiots distracted by YouTube sh1te that they'll swear they weren't watching, only listening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 329 ✭✭Exiled Rebel

On the other hand you have the longer warranties with BYD. There's an awful lot to consider.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,129 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

I’ve never watched it while driving. The question was asked, and answered. Convenience for passenger. No need to be a dick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭dubrov

Yeah, I guess there's loads of minor differences.

A few others I can think of is that the Seal has a bigger range but is less efficient. It also has no dashcam but a nicer interior (imo). Also you are not tied into BYD apps only with Android Auto and Apple Carplay supported.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19 jaymac430

Also, the price difference is only if you pick the white M3 with black interior and 18inch alloys. Start changing any of those, and the price difference closes very quickly.

Although very subjective, IMO the Seal (for me at least) is a much better car. I test drove both several times, and researched both fairly intensively (read reviews, watched you tube reviews), and finally bought the Seal.

In my time with the car (since Apr), the software and app has been updated several times. Although still not perfect, the vast majority of software concerns have been very well addressed, and that is on top of a fundamentally excellent car.

I suggest that you test drive both (a few times if you can) and then decide. The M3 is definitely a great car, but it’s the Seal for me. For you it might be different, and that’s OK 😀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,129 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

I can pretty much echo your sentiments after a similar time spent in the Seal. Opted for the Design spec in ice blue with black interior. Had test drove 2 x M3s and fell in love with the responsiveness (both were DMs) - unreal power, but the seal for me at least was more striking in appearance and the responsiveness was really good, and once in sport mode, it's plenty quick if that's your thing. I much preferred the interior of the Seal also but totally understand the subjective nature in this field. Boot is a tad disappointing (wont take a full bag of clubs without removing the driver - 1st world problem I know); a full hatch setup would have been a better option I feel. Interior space is excellent, front and back.

Charging has been a dream, between 2-6am several times per week at home. Still in the honeymoon period so very conscious of parking, particularly in/around the Blanch Center area and trying my best to keep it pristine in appearance, despite the shite weather we are dealing with and those tools that look for something nice in a carpark and then park as close to it as is physically possible.

Agreed on the app improvements but I would really like to see them reset the reversing 'bong' to an audible level. Funny how you get lazy and come almost to depend on it in certain situations. I did downgrade the SW to allow sideloading and despite adding plenty of .apk files, I've really have not used anything other that Spotify. This will eat through the 1GB data allowance in no time so it's important to hotspot to your phone if you are listening to music online. Radio reception can be very hit and miss; I can only imagine how bad it must be in rural areas.

Apart from the relatively minor shortcomings, it does turn heads, particularly on a nice day, and I still find myself admiring the lines after 4mths of ownership. All in all, very happy with it. To think what it replaced had 270,000kms on the clock when it was sold nots so long ago, and I'm sitting at just over 7,000km now. Long may it last.

I can echo the sentiments above. Test drove the M3 Ioniq 6 and Seal, went with the Seal. 12,000 km later I'm still very happy. I added the dash cam bought off AliExpress for less than 100. Was very easy in fairness and all the wiring is there waiting. Clean job.

Havent sideloaded anything. Use the native Spotify app a lot. Change to portrait mode for that 😁... Partially because I can but find it useful for having the list of upcoming songs if a random playlist is playing.

Im also a golfer (debatable) and find the boot a little disappointing. It's probably the biggest plus I'd give the M3. I fit everything in but it's tight. No way I'd get a second bag in there beside my caddy car and bag.

The space passengers have always gets comments. It's not a small car. Given the club's are in the boot shopping generally goes in the back along the floor. Loads of room there.

And imagine if every single person driving a car had some kind of portable computerised device that allows them to watch content, chat to people, video calls, check stuff online...

Imagine the absolute carnage on the roads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,949 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Holding or supporting your phone by any part of your body while driving is explicitly illegal.

Watching a YouTube video on your big screen is not explicitly illegal, though is clearly significantly distracting.

We don't need to imagine the carnage. It's on the news most days, very substantial Increases in road deaths.

its covered under existing driving whilst distracted legislation. And enforced as such

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,129 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

I agree totally. I see it every day on the M50 both ways, particularly when busy, the amount of people with their head buried in their phone is startling. I'd say that the vast majority of incidents that happen on this route (and no doubt, others) would be rear end shunts, typically caused by the above. A lot of people on the road simply have no comprehension of the impact that a fraction of time with their focus off the road impacts their ability to react and stop safely in an emergency.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭yllw.ldbttr

You're picking an obscure use case to make your point, poorly I might add.

Nobody mentioned holding or supporting a phone, I was referring to how easy it would be to use YouTube on a mobile device in a cradle, exactly the same result as above that you are complaining about.

I'd estimate that there are 100s of times more collisions and injuries due to mobile phone usage than there are YouTube usage in the above example.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,949 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

It's not enforced. I've brought video evidence of drivers with YouTube playing on dash mounted phones to Gardai and they have refused to prosecute, as it's not explicitly illegal.

    Ireland doesn’t need a CyclingMikey

Now before you go on a rampage. It’s tongue in cheek.

it doesnt work that way, i suspect you may know this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,949 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Your estimation may well be correct, because most people don't have a big screen i’m their dashboard, or don’t have the ability to put YouTube on the screen if they do have one.

That doesn't mean we should sit back and watch another generation of drivers setting themselves up for distracted driving without highlighting this risk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,949 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Perhaps your original tweet should have explained how it does work so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,186 ✭✭✭✭listermint

yes the guards enforce the law, not you. And they have rules of engagement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,949 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Making a report to a Garda is not 'enforcing the law'. It's making a report to a Garda.

If you report a driver with a phone in their hand, Gardai will follow up and enforce.

If you report a driver with YouTube playing on a dash mounted phone, Gardai will not enforce, and will tell you that it's not explicitly illegal.

You should perhaps start a thread on that topic rather than derailing this one.

I don't disagree with your goals here, but they're not relevant to the thread since the amount of people capable of sideloading the YT app on this car is miniscule.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,949 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

They generally take footage of phones being held quite seriously. They don't take footage of people with YouTube playing seriously, because there is no explicit legislation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,129 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

Fitted the aliexpress mudguards - relatively unobtrusive, very easy fit. Quality is as you would expect for the price point. Hopefully they will help a little.

  • Registered Users Posts: 169 ✭✭Sealman

Look well on it,from my experience they will make a big difference!

Hardly notice them to be honest, which is a good thing. Any need to take the wheels off?

So am I right in saying the digital key won't work for those of us with a recent Samsung phones because Samsung Wallet still isn't supported in Ireland? I tried setting up Samsung Wallet on my S23 Ultra and setting my country as UK(Ireland not an option) but when I go through the digital key setup at the end it says digital keys not supported in Samsung Wallet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,129 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

Nope, the only issue that you will encounter is the small PH2 screws (one on each corner) that need to be removed. Not an issue on the front as you can lock the wheels but trickier on the rear as you only have a few inches of space between the screw head and the tyre thread.

A very small stubby or ideally a 1/4" ratchet drive with PH2 socket and you're sorted. Literally takes a few mins each corner, the task is made significantly easier due to the fact that all screws, bolts and clips are relatively pristine so easily removed.

So, you will have a combination of screws on the front and back to remove (one per corner), 1 x 10mm bolt on the underside rear (one each side) and some of those easily removable (and very flimsy) fittings below. Again, very straight forward task and the finished fitment is quite good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,186 ✭✭✭✭listermint

no idea, but why does it even need Samsung wallet in the first place. there are other digital hosts out there. All i know is mine still hasnt got the option in the app nor any email from byd for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭yllw.ldbttr

Me neither but I'm still out of the country.

Out of interest, has anyone who sideloaded the Android version a while back received the digital key, could be an issue. Although I think everyone received the OTA subsequently so hopefully not the cause of the delay. Staged rollout maybe?

I'll check when back in Ireland.

  • Registered Users Posts: 183 ✭✭DEFIE

I updated manually to 2403 before the OTA. The OTA applied the "official" 2403 with no issue and digital key is working fine for me (iphone)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭yllw.ldbttr

Nice one. Good to know. I didn't expect it to be an issue but you never know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,129 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

Welcome reply from a query I sent to BYD (autoservice.contact@byd.com) on the latest update in relation to the reversing chime being almost wiped out and several other suggestions. We shall see……

    Dear ,

Thanks for getting touch with our team. We much appreciate your investigation and valuable feedbacks which are quite impressive and useful. We have reported to our teams with all your suggestions and issues.

For the Low Volume of Reverse Sound on BYD SEAL, there is truly a change after the latest OTA 240301. We have noticed the current situation and this will be sorted in the next version of update.

Sorry for any inconvenience it may have caused. Please let us know if you have any questions.

    BR,

    BYD Service

Regarding activation of the digital key . It might be just a very remarkable co-incidence but I received the email with my activation code from BYD shortly after trying to activate via the digital key menu in the car. This action may have prompted the sending of the code

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,276 ✭✭✭RainInSummer

It does. I checked my phone after trying to set it up and I had ten emails. All with the same code.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,949 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Fair point. I don't want to drag the thread off topic. I just made a single comment and others jumped in.

Anyone driving with YouTube videos playing on a dashboard screen is a dangerous fool. You're only kidding yourself if you say that it doesn't distract the driver.

In the software sub menu "push 5 times" find something looks like a sentry mode show 4 cam picture together but not working. Anyone else know what is this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 195 ✭✭GPoint

is Andrew j Renko a driver or a cyclist? Too much criticism of the drivers and how they are bad for his cycling.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 40,104 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Maybe Tesla like sentry mode in the works…..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭yllw.ldbttr

Available in China and there is a guy on FB who was trying to port the app, so hopefully only a matter of time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,276 ✭✭✭RainInSummer

It's a third party app AFAIK.

  • Registered Users Posts: 169 ✭✭Sealman

Just wondering what the advantages are of the Digital Key over using the app. With the app you can lock, unlock and drive the car without having the key.You don't even have to go back to the app to lock it. You just press the button on the door as normal. I have done it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,276 ✭✭✭RainInSummer

How do you drive the car with just the phone? Mine won't allow me to drive it away unless the key is present.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,129 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

just present the wallet key on your phone or watch to the driver side mirror. Car opens. Throw the phone on the seat or leave it in your pocket. It doesn’t matter. And drive away. No physical key required

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 40,104 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

If the app can do what Tesla do then it has big advantages.

Phone in pocket. Walk onto car. Open car.
    get in, drive.

Get out, walk away, car locks automatically.

All while phone has never left the pocket.

If they can match that as Tesla phone key, it will be brilliant.
