Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Yep, finished at 100% on 56 hours I think. Not sure if boss attempts are included in that time. It is a huge game though.

"Howlongtobeat" says 29.5 hours for completionists though. Depends on your playstyle and ability level.

I have Hogwart's Legacy ready to go as my next big game, but I think I need a palette cleanser before jumping into another huge game.

So my next game is Rebel Transmute, a Metroidvania that came out 2 weeks ago.

It's a nice short one, definitely under 10 hours with a decent sized map. Good challenge too. You start with a very short range gun, so it's almost a melee game.

Beat the first boss this morning.

Snap; picked that up yesterday. Created by one guy - and it shows in some respects - but a nice feel to the thing. Very much wearing its inspirations on its sleeve but I've like the cut of its jib so far. I did have to turn on the HD Fonts 'cos the pixelation was just too much in places.

The last night of Mario Kart 8 Wii U online :(

Let me tell you, the competition is fierce tonight

For my Metroidvania peeps, Ato is a new game that came out last week.

No real enemies apart from bosses (and they aren't super difficult - yet!). Lots of fun platforming, puzzles, upgrades, lovely pixel art, a great soundtrack and a decent sized map. Should be 6-8 hours in length.

Can’t get enough of the new Shiren The Wanderer over the past week. A deceptively simple roguelike (turn based movement and combat, in which the enemies move / attack when you move/attack) expands in scale as you discover more about its various systems, items and secrets. So much potential for fun emergent gameplay and random moments of chance (sometime positive, sometimes will end your run in a moment). Runs great on the Switch thanks to a simple but effective 3D art style. It’s often pretty difficult and lacks the consistent progression of some roguelites - but splits the difference with some subquests that add extra items to the pool as you go and optional additional support characters.

One of the Switch’s finest games IMO.

Astral Chain . Surprised at how well it runs and how good it looks . Playing docked .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,540 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Finished this 100% a few days ago. Final time was 11h 30m. Dark AF storyline!

After about an hour at the default difficulty, I restarted the game at the one below that. Still a good challenge but some of the bosses were a bit easier. Great game - one of those hidden gems on Switch that not many will play (unfortunately).

I'm on Tales of Kenzara: Zau now. It's good, but I'm not absolutely loving it yet - I'll persevere.

Finally picked up Metroid Prime Remastered. Worth it alone for the flashbacks to the Gamecube era…

Played Rebel Transmute but really hated the feel of the thing; too clumsy and the one-man dev was really showing in its design.

Switched to Haak and that's more been my jam. Plays more like Hollow Knight, Prince of Persia, Guacamelee and so on; fast and slick.

I'm currently trawling through my Gameboy and GB Color carts now I'm the owner of an Analogue Pocket.

And they look and play amazing.

Also, installed a bunch of cores, and was playing New Super Mario Land, a hack of Super Mario Land but with the visuals of NSMB, it's brilliant

I'm currently about halfway through an artifact hunt in Metroid Prime

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

… annnnnd dropped outta Haak. Finished the final boss then realised that it's one of those True Ending games with a grind for getting the "proper" ending. Why the F do indie games do this so much?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,913 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

Finished all expansions of Quake 2...Holy crap that took 6 months (playing on and off obv)

Incredible value for money on that one and never a dull moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,540 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

It's not that bad, pixelburp. You just have to find 4 towers and hack them, then beat the final boss again. 30 mins more, tops. Use a guide to find the towers.

Towards the end of Paper Mario TTYD. Absolutely loving this game. Never played the original on Gamecube.

Writing is genuinely very witty, characters are great, gameplay is refined over Paper Mario 64.

And Peach gets undressed at least three times in this game LOL

It's incredibly good value, and I was always a fan of the game, it really put my 90s PC through it's paces!

Finished It a while back and just got Doom Eternal in the sale. Absolute cracker on the swith so far

I happened across a copy of Arms going for €18, so that's my new Switch game after wrapping up Super Mario Wonder. I've played a couple of levels of the Grand Prix so far and it's good fun.

I played and finished Animal Well to the first ending, and did some of the post game content. I don't know if I have the patience to get 65 eggs and 16 rabbits but I'm going to give it a break for a while and start Paper Mario (I finished the prologue and started chapter 1 this morning - fantastic so far).

Saw it by chance in CEX. I remember trying the demo ages back and thinking it was fun but not €50 worth of fun, then kinda forgot to keep looking for it over time.

Now, if only I could find a copy of Astral Chain going for an even remotely similar price...

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Started up Death's Gambit: Afterlife there last night and JFC. Maybe I played it too tired & strung out but the introduction to the game was bleedin' awful. A tonne of mechanics smothered in lore that smells suspiciously like Dark Souls nonsense, and a really dreadfully weighted gameplay section.

Nice feel to the combat so far, but I'm struggling to make sense of the whole thing. Also not helped by being one of those games not configured for handheld and so the text is nigh unreadable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,117 ✭✭✭eggy81

got hollow night in the latest sale for €7. Just started it last night. First metroidvania to try since dread. Enjoying it so far if finding it a little tough. Gonna take me forever

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Hate giving up games cos they cost money but if I'm not enjoying them either ... ? Dropped Death's Gambit cos I just didn't gel with it at all at all

So instead, decided I needed a comfort Metroidvania and so fired up Steamworld Dig 2: not the hardest or the longest, but the digging mechanic is such fun, the controls and feel so right. I hope there's room for a Dig 3 sometimes, I know this franchise loves bopping about genres (wish more did!)

Took a break from Paper Mario TTYD after 2 crystals.

Playing Beyond Good & Evil. Great port, loving it so far.

The camera is still f-ing horrendous though (especially in rooms with a fixed viewpoint or narrow viewing area).

  • Registered Users Posts: 740 ✭✭✭Xofpod

Just finished Super Mario U on the switch with my daughter. Took us a lot longer than usual marios as a disproportionate amount of time was spent pitching each other off platforms….

Love the 2d marios. Might need to have another run through Wonder.

Also picked up Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Layer in the eshop sale for peanuts. Looks more Sonic-y than anything else but could scratch the itch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,963 ✭✭✭Mr.Saturn

I'm still annoyed Yooka Laylee 2 isn't co-op. It looked to be scratching the gap left by Retro not putting out any new Donkey Kong for that balls-hard co-op fix, but you've to suffer alone apparently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,472 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

It's not like a super fast Sonic game. It's like Donkey Kong or Mario with an overworld top down puzzling section bolted on. Very good platforming in the game.

Rayman Legends is probably ahead of most of the 2D Mario games for me, and it also supports multiple players if you are looking for that. Usually dead cheap too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 740 ✭✭✭Xofpod

Yeah, played and loved Rayman Legends, probably on the WiiU. Brilliant, especially the music levels (Black Betty comes to mind), but not quite at the 2d Mario mark, to my mind. More opportunity to screw over your co-players in Mario…

I presume you've played Super Mario 3D World. It's multiplayer and pretty much top tier Mario. Which means top tier video game.

  • Registered Users Posts: 740 ✭✭✭Xofpod

Yep, great game. Again, played on the WiiU so have never played the Bowser's Fury add-on. May well be worth a revisit. I think DK Tropical Freeze will come first for a replay though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,472 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Tropical Freeze is hard, gave up a couple of times, but it's so good I went back and finished it.

The two Ori games are brilliant too. Especially the second one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 740 ✭✭✭Xofpod

Yep, Tropical Freeze hard but not unfairly so. Finished it before but so long ago it should feel fairly fresh again.

Played a little bit of Ori but too Metroidvania for my tastes at this precise moment. Saving all my focus in that area for Silksong, which should be out any day now….

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Picked up Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus, which is a game that wears it's Hollow Knight influence pretty plainly on its sleeve. Gorgeous 2D Japanese inspired art style and has a nice feeling to it; controls well and with a nice snappiness to it.

My only complaint is one of those mandatory "keep ahead of the fire/waves/dangerous-thing" sections that suddenly demand split second dexterity out of nowhere. Have been stuck at that for ages now, my fat fingers struggling to get past it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,540 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I'm about an hour (and two bosses) into it and I love it. Beautiful and fun game. Love the traversal mechanics, but I feel like I might regret saying once I'm a few more hours into it. 😊

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I'm a few more hours into it since my vent & it's definitely an ebb & flow kinda game; fair enough for the most part but then has difficulty spikes that make me hover over the "invincibility mode" in the Options Menu.

As you say though, it is a ludicrously gorgeous game with its art-style; I particularly love the detail of its characters "speaking" in little musical flourishes. Such a nice tweak to the standard approach to have NPCs speak gibberish.

Picked up Arkenoid: Eternal Battle for less than €3 on the eshop. It has a decent single player mode, both the 80s original and a revamped version, and an online "battle" mode, but the real joy is the local competition mode, up to 4 players. Already causing chaos and division in my house…

  • Registered Users Posts: 740 ✭✭✭Xofpod

Music is pretty decent too, 80s electronica type stuff…

    Master of the Universe

Played through 'Thank Goodness You're Here!' over the weekend. Absolutely loved every second of it. Only about two hours long but definitely worth picking up IMO, very unique game.

Only down side was the framerate is a little Choppy on The Switch.

I'm about an hour (and 1 boss) into Crypt Custodian, the new game by Islets and Sheepo developer Kyle Thompson. He's a developer I'd pretty much buy anything from, sight unseen. Islets and Sheepo are both brilliant.

Crypt Custodian is a top down metroidvania about a cat who is punished to clean up the afterlife for all eternity. Another great game by Kyle and will probably take 10-15 hours to 100% (so I hear). Good level of challenge too, without being too frustrating.

About €7 in Brazil (external eshop credit required) or €17 here, going to €20 in about 12 days.

I'm replaying Pokemon X on the 3DS. Enjoyable but I miss wondertrading.

    Layton Vs Phoenix Wright.

Was going on holidays so wanted a game to play on the 3ds.

  • Registered Users Posts: 740 ✭✭✭Xofpod

Playing Mario and Sonic at the Olympics (Tokyo) with my daughter. Fair amount of button bashing events (a la Daley Thompson, for those of a certain vintage…) but we're really enjoying the rugby 7s. Funny, cos have no time for the sport in real life but it's great craic. Might even tempt us in to Mario Strikers….

Just discovered the Drastic DS Emulator on Google Play Store (free) so going through all my favourites like Puyo Pop Fever, Ace Attorney, Advance Wars

Got a few new games at the weekend.

Gimmick! 2 is a great platform game with an excellent physics engine that leads to some head scratching puzzles. Not too easy either. I've played the first level three times, and can only find 6 of the 10 hidden chests. A great David Wise soundtrack is a massive bonus too.

Castlevania Dominus Collection - I'm 3 bosses into Order of Ecclesia. I can't really remember it. Originally (and last) played on the DS over 15 years ago, so it's like playing it for the first time again.

Bzzzt is a twitch platformer with lovely crisp graphics and a good soundtrack. Levels are really short and has a great "one more go" appeal. Levels are timed, with a par time on each to beat. Nice game to pick up and play a few levels at a time. 50 levels plus 25 bonus levels.

Peglin is a roguelike that mixes Peggle with turn-based battles. The more you play, the more you unlock and the easier it gets.
