Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

From an Irish perspective, it was a solid glide path to Paris. Brian Fay’s 7.34 must give him confidence that he has a shot at the 5K final. Coscoran also had a decent run. He needs to step it up a little in Paris though to be a contender for the final.

I’m not concerned about Adeleke’s run. She had a poor start and still ran an SB. 22.3x is a very fast 200m run for a quarter miler. However, she will need to run sub 49 in Paris. Clearly, Paulino, Pryce, and Kazmarek will run 48.xx. Who knows what Eid-Naser will produce. She’s certainly capable, but will need the race of her life. As others said, she shouldn’t write off the mixed relay as a potential first Olympic medal.

Finally, a word for Nick Griggs. What a phenomenal and almost underrated athlete he is. Let’s remember that he’s only 19. He will still only be 23 at the LA Olympics in 2028. His time will come then for sure.

It’s good to temper expectations but I think that prediction is overly negative. Top 4 is very probable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,715 ✭✭✭✭walshb

I think 22.3 for Adeleke was a very good run

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 dolldot2

The other side of it now is their no pressure on her because of these insane times people are running no doubt be dopers somewhere!!

I still cannot get over that 400m run from someone who just burst on to the scene and took their pb down in a massive scalp (7th fastest ever time over 400m the commentary didn’t even appreciate the achievement of how fast the run was ) that after a long NCAA season generational talent perhaps… but certainly raises the question about dopers and I hope am wrong.. she ran 50.21 in 2023 and now running 48.57 massive improvement!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 dolldot2

Sorry not being negative I love Rhasidat but just with the times getting closer to that WR it going be tough… and her 200m wasn’t there today but again the pressure off her now unlike Pryce with that insane time today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,389 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Watch it back and watch one of her European medal performances.

She was running at about 80% today.

Expectation now is a 200m Semi and 400m Final appearance in Paris. If she runs a PB in the latter, its an all time Irish achievement. If she does medal, its uncharted waters and an instant historical Irish performance, up there with Treacy and O'Sullivan. Up there with Taylor really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,638 ✭✭✭Hamachi

You’re good. I think you’re being realistic. Just to note though that Natalia Kaczmarek’s 200m PB in only 22.8x. It may not be a true reflection of her ability in the event but it does demonstrate that there isn’t necessarily an intrinsic correlation between raw 200m speed and ability over the one lap.

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 dolldot2

She won’t be happy with that run she closed well but she does have the advantage of 200m raw speed so that what her coach was trying to focus on …get out hard over the first 200m and then finish strongly because her rivals don’t have the same raw speed but today just a race she was aiming to smash her PB and change the way she runs the 1 lap… Pryce had a strapping on her knee today anything can happen in two weeks before they line up again…am still baffled by her but I cannot be suspicious every time someone runs a crazy time🤣🤣🤣 but remember Naser in Doha barely broke a breath running 3rd fastest time ever … then was the missed tests … and her bullshite story she also back and rounding into form! Anyway my rant is over …

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭Musicrules

They have. Even on this thread there was some fella saying Adeleke only had 2 people in the 400 to worry about.

Do you think the relay has a chance to medal though even with Rhasidat? I think not likely … the mixed I would be more hopeful …sneak something special but that would mean everyone running to their absolute full potential. USA squad dept is superior and GB are the same and then Jamaica and Netherlands… USA sent their B squad to the Bahamas and so did GB . I don’t think I would be in anyway shocked if she bows out of the relays maybe come back for final if we can get without her have to look beyond her she is amazing but she will be focused on the 400m individual and she does need to be selfish to put herself in the best position to get to the final in those qualifying rounds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,236 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I think Rhasidat would be crazy to miss the 4 x 400m mixed relay if the team was to qualify for the final. There's no guarantee she will even medal in the 400 individual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,389 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Unfortunately the 4x400 Mixed Final is 6 days before the Women's 400m final, and just 2 days before the Women's 400m Heats.

So if she has to give up the Mixed Relay, she will have to do so before she begins her tilt at individual success.

It will come down very much to team decision and a close analysis of every one of her indicators and markers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 dolldot2

She may come back for final if they make it to final without her but she hardly going be doing the earlier rounds… when she has her own individual rounds to get through and I think that will be her focus. Nothing guaranteed Pryce who ran that crazy time today had strapping on her lower leg her body bound to be hurting hopefully that Arkansas coach isn’t running her into the ground like he did with Wilson last year so nothing guaranteed in two weeks and she has to go through 3 rounds now to get into that final … obviously after todays performance she is the one to beat and all eyes will be on her.. 🏅

Although Rhasidat ran a sub par performance by her standards today she will regroup and be ready to go for it when the time matters without any pressure that she expected to medal!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,236 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

A single 400m mixed relay final would surely be totally doable for her. It's not as if she would need to be at her absolute peak in the 400m heats 48 hours later.

  • Registered Users Posts: 663 ✭✭✭Fr D Maugire

Some huge jumps being made in PBs all over the place. Nickisha Pryce had never run sub 50 before 2024 and is now down to 48.5!!! Klaver has set two PBs in her last two races and is half a second quicker than she was in Rome. Kaczmarek has set 2 PBs and improved by half a second from last year. Meanwhile Rhasidat has improved by .13 from last year. I hope her team have timed it right and we will see an improvement similar to the others, or else something dodgy is going on. Pryce was running 53s just 2 years ago, 5 second improvements!!! Is older than Adeleke and was well behind her last year.

Said it before, but don't see Adeleke running the mixed relays, she has as much chance of an individual medal as a relay medal, so cant see her risking her individual chances for maybe a medal in relays.

Out of all today that 48.57 is the one I would question the most her improvements are astonishing especially after winning the NCAA in June and she lowers her PB again to the 7th fastest ever in the world… generational talent perhaps but how is her body able to hold up after a long NCAA season she started her season in January whereas the professionals start their season in April/May and the significance of that win today against the seasoned professionals like Klaver and Kaczmarek …

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,236 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Mixed relay final would be just one extra 400m race for her though. Also, you could imagine she would be absolutely kicking herself afterwards if she failed to medal in the 400m having decided not to run the mixed relay (assuming the team qualifies).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,638 ✭✭✭Hamachi

Some great Irish performances in the Euro U-18 championships in Slovakia. 4 medals so far, all from the young men.

Thomas Williams - gold in the hammer.
Cian Crampton - bronze in the discus.
Conor Kelly - bronze in the 400m. He’s a real prospect, already sub 47 at 17 years old.
Joe Burke - bronze in the 200m.

Ben Sykes also made the final of the men’s 100m. More medal potential tomorrow with Saoirse Fitzgerald and Pia Langton both making the women’s 800m final and Bobby More making the men’s 800m.

It’s so encouraging to see our junior athletes diversifying into the field events and building on our growing reputation as a nation with proficiency in the sprints.

Very good article by Ian O’Riordan in yesterday’s Irish Times on Mary Purcell. Represented Ireland in 1972 and 1976 at the Olympics. She boycotted 1980 Moscow

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

The times have all dropped . Seems most obvious in the 800m.

    Shoes/tracks/wavelight and less so training/nutrition

Letsrun is speculating everyone from 400-1500 is now on the Maurten bi-carb system

I’d say the owl banned substances works much better to improve performance 😂😂

I cannot believe the Olympics start next week we have definitely have some medal prospects rowing, boxing, swimming and gymnastics going be bloody fantastic cannot wait!! Athletics starts 2 weeks from today really hope to see some good performances especially would love to see Sarah Healy make a final, hopefully Ciara can round into a bit of form and Rhasidat and the mixed relay. Mark English is rounding into good form a final would be an amazing achievement but going be tough!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,808 ✭✭✭✭Water John

You can't really throw, what in Irish are termed 'asachans' at everybody in the sport. That's just wrong. Alsways guessed Roger Bannister was on some sauce😉.

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 dolldot2

you got me all wrong I am only making the reference that review of this product suggests only 1% performance improvement but the real cheaters in sport will always be streets ahead when it comes to improving performance but not making reference to anyone just joking 🙃 This product is a nutritional support helping to improve performance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,661 ✭✭✭drury..

    I read that it's more than 1%

My point was that it may partly explain the superlative performances we're saying across the board

You went off on a tangent about doping

It's very clear that times in many events have taken a recent leap

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 dolldot2

Yes but not all athletes are clean surely you know that… regardless of shoes, nutrition, tracks etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 dolldot2

I am also not saying everyone who dropping times is dopping but I did make my point about Pryce improvements a relatively unknown athlete who never ran sub 50 until May and now she running 48.57 that a PB after a long NCAA season! 7th fastest ever … that crazy.

I read somewhere yesterday people were suspicious about Georgina Bell improvements after a massive PB yesterday in the 800m but she was a very talented junior athlete who gave up athletics and returned to the sport in her late 20s so I don’t believe she dopping!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 663 ✭✭✭Fr D Maugire

That applies the other way as well, if she ran the mixed relay and then mised out on an individual medal. It will be very interesting to see how many individual medal contenders run the mixed relay. Doing it at Worlds which are every two years is very different than Olympics. Will Bol run for the Netherlands for example? I can see a lot of the top athletes missing the mixed relays. When Poland won last time out, they didn't have anyone who was a genuine individual medal contender.

Not wanting to drag this off track (pathetic), but Iv'e only one account. Don't know the OP here, but she seems to come from my neck of the woods. Lets focus on our great athletes, in track and field, here.

😂 It does look dodgy you have to say. Drury was talking about the point he was making but when was his last post on this thread?

Just so people know I'll be creating a thread for Paris either at the end of this week or early next week. Can't believe it's almost the Olympics!

Who are favorites for men’s marathon Paris?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,661 ✭✭✭drury..

Well it's not bekele or kipchoge

Bekele has a shot at a medal if he doesn't dnf as he is prone to do

It will be v interesting to see if the track is fast

They're saying on LR that mondo's claims of faster tracks are exxagerated

Just wondering did anybody hear anything more about Ciara Mageean and her alleged bust up with her coach?

I thought her statement was pretty pointed, explicitly thanking Thomas Moran (boyfriend) and Jip Vastenburg (team mate), but no mention of Helen Clitheroe. Hopefully, it will all blow over, but the optics aren’t great.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 liamooooo

Elite athletes and elite coaches have difference of opinion all the time. Elite athletes will always do what they think is best for them at that moment that's the nature of Elite sport utter selfesness. It's not a trait we would choose in most functioning teams in a high performance workplace I think.

Israel Olatunde breaks his own Irish record again

    https://x.com/Cathal_Dennehy/status/1825198753550307549?t=wCKT6TQpRVFOr9hC6bgjdA&s=19

Felt like it all went pretty quiet with Olatunde for a while. Not sure if he was injured, or perhaps just hit a wall?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 970 ✭✭✭Westernview

Brilliant. Hopefully it was just a dip in form or am injury. Only 22 as well.

He was doing his final exams in UCD, so wasn't fully focused on his training until he got them done.

Entry lists for Lausanne Diamond League are out

    https://lausanne.diamondleague.com/en/programme-results-lausanne/

Hocker vs Ingebrigtsen in the 1500 is probably the meet highlight. Should be broadcast on Virgin Media 2 from 7pm on Thursday, but will give another heads up in the thread on the day.

Entry lists for Silesia on Sunday are also out, where Adeleke will race the 400m

    https://silesia.diamondleague.com/en/programme-results/translate-to-english-programme-results/

The women's 400 has a great lineup actually, all three medalists from Paris will be there.

What's the incentive for running in diamond leagues? Also if it's money, what sort of money is involved?
