I really like him but he definitely gets a much easier ride from most irish golf fans Rory than Rory was ever afforded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭GolfPar

Up to 27th in the world and currently 10th in the FedEx. Having a very good season after last year's disappointing form.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,503 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

He got to 8 under par early in his 3rd round.

The winning score was 9 under.

He's let a gigantic opportunity slip between his fingers, he was fully capable of winning the tournament had he not imploded in the 3rd round. He was fully capable of beating Schauffele he just didn't take advantage of the incredible position he was in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,203 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Well you are saying he should have stayed at -8. All the leaders at the start of round 3 were over par on the back nine. He had an awful back none but he was gonna lose a couple even playing decent.

Yes he lost it in round 3 but that happens. He came back strong today after that nightmare and he deserves credit for that.

Hopefully he comes back next year and wins it again in Royal Portrush.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,505 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Shane may curse a bit more than Rory but he's never said he was British.

So hardly surprising Irish fans cut him more slack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,503 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

All he needed was to grind out a 2 or 3 over on his round on Saturday.Being able to put on a good bad round is what often wins championships.Don;t know whether everything was going too well the first couple of days (I started to think he was going to coast to victory like Harman last year and numerous others over the years) and then didn't anticipate ever being in trouble and froze and didn't know how to deal with it effectively.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,648 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Yes the “mask” is slipping with him and has done before and I like what I see. He’s a competitor, he doesn’t like losing and while that anger led to him losing a bit of composure in the 3rd round it’s also behind the competitive nature that means he’s often at his best in the big events with top 10 finishes. Some regular golf types mightn’t like that. To hell with them. He’s going to the Olympics for Ireland again, did well in that last time, hopefully another good performance to come. Again some of your regular golf types won’t be bothered by that. Like the Ryder Cup it’s not for money so they mightn’t rate it but it provides a great spectacle for the sport of golf.

  • Administrators Posts: 54,316 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Shouting at spectators and camera men is not "competitive nature". Banging clubs and stropping is not "competitive nature". That's absolute nonsense. You are confusing anger with competitiveness.

None of the players out there like losing, and many of them are known for being incredibly competitive personalities.

You'll never win anything in golf unless you can keep your head. He couldn't handle some of the bad shots he hit on Saturday and as a result ended up in a negative spiral where he followed up mistakes with more mistakes.

Yea the course was really hard but it was the same for almost everyone. He has to cope with it better.

he has won plenty in golf already. The 3rd round was a disaster for him and cost him a great opportunity to win a second Major title, opportunity lost no point dwelling on it or hand wringing about some people being upset because he shouted at a camera guy. Interview him in the Irish Examiner he’s turning his focus to the Olympics now.

  • Administrators Posts: 54,316 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

The shouting at camera men and volunteers and banging clubs into the ground is part of the reason why the 3rd round was such a disaster for him.

    He totally lost his head.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,648 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

yeah, you already said that. I’m sure he’s aware of it. I’ve seen him bang his clubs and swear before, it’s not a new thing. He’s moving on to the next competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,144 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

I'm a golf type ....for your information..golf types don't like lads losing head in a group ..because it is very selfish ..distracting and a pain in the hole to watch ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,441 ✭✭✭dublin49

did you watch his back nine on Sat,playing drivers into par 3s and almost not being able to reach the fairway is lottery golf and 3 of those par 4s were playing as par 5s ,so to suggest he could just shoot 2 or 3 over is a bit unfair,I know some did but it was described as golfing hell by commentators so his poor round has some mitigation.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,648 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

you’re not comparing your round of golf with a few pals with the actual competitive sport.

But most of his competitors were able to keep some control of their scores on Saturday afternoon, it was only him who had a complete meltdown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,932 ✭✭✭Trampas

Would people ever stop about he was in the worse of the conditions on Saturday. Along with everyone else and he shot the worse round of them all. They all played the same course from unless Shane decided to play off different tee boxes. He lost the head on Saturday and that’s the reason why he didn’t do well. If anything conditions suited a leader as didn’t need to shoot birds. He just needed to keep it in play.

He shouldn’t be giving out to spectators and volunteers. If they’re not there then no event. He gets away with the anger from us because people think it’s passion but we say Hatton isn’t passion he’s just a grump

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,617 ✭✭✭overpronator

I think by now it should be clear that Shane is a bit of an arsehole when things aren't going his way. This can be framed (explained away) a few ways that can include things like he's a competitor or that he's passionate - both of which are absolutely true. Some people like it or live with it for those reasons and honestly that's fine. It doesn't absolve him of the fact that it's arsehole behaviour though and the majority of other passionate and highly competitive players on the tour do not behave similarly, especially towards staff and spectators which bottom line I think is quite telling behavior.

I still support him and really wanted him to win but I'm increasingly getting tired of the manchild tendencies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,505 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Are you basically saying professional sportsman can behave anyway they want because they're competing?

Bizzare POV but each to their own.

Personally I like Shane when he's being charismatic and dislike him when he's being a childish twat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,203 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

A +3 on Saturday wouldn't have won it for him.

Justin Rose played in terrible conditions too but to his credit he dug in and put in a great round. He showed a fighting spirit that Shane didn't seem to have.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,648 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

I don’t give a damn what he’s like on a personal basis. I had €20 each way on him for a top 12 finish. Would have got over €700 if he won but came out with €100. He’s a good golfer for punters. Over the years he has saved his best performances for the Majors and the team events Ryder Cup and so on. He’s usually a good price for these Majors because he’s not particularly highly ranked I don’t think? I hope he’s nice to the wife and kids but that’s none of my business. As regards some camera guy sticking a camera in his face or the “patrons” who shout stuff like “youh the maaaaaan etc”, I couldn’t give a rats ass if Shane is rude to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,441 ✭✭✭dublin49

I can't argue he played well on the back nine as he didnt. But he lost 2 shots on the field on the 8th which killed him.

Everything that dropped for him on the first 2 days didnt on the Sat.He just had a bad day in horrendous conditions like Koepka did and JT did yesterday,I mentioned earlier in thread that Shane rarely puts 4 good rounds together, thats why he is a top 50 golfer and not a top 10. I think Shaffeule was the only golfer over 4 rounds that was getting to -9 ,he just looked in control all the time ,so don't think Shane left it behind .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,505 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

You're fairly animated and opinionated for someone who doesn't give a damn.

Anyway, Shane gets paid big bucks because of fans who pay to go to stand in the rain and watch him play.

He'd do well to treat them with respect. Same as for the people working there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,505 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

    ..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,441 ✭✭✭dublin49

I think Shane is generally liked as in general hes a likeable friendly lad which shines through.Seems popular with other players and the media, sure he gets upset when he has a bad day.Theres plenty are Aholes when thinks are even going there way.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,648 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

You’re fairly opinionated and fairly judgmental yourself. Wind your neck in there.

Nobody got hurt, Shane got angry as he saw his chance to win another Major slip away from him having worked so hard to get into a good position.

He’ll be back. I hope he rests up well and will tune in hopeful that he’ll get a medal for Ireland at the Olympics.

I’m not going to sit here bitching about him like a few others on the boards.ie golf pages here. He’s a good player with some exceptional talent around the greens. He has supported his county GAA teams very well I believe and he turns up and plays well in the big tournaments. I like him and if he got a bit tetchy with someone when he was frustrated and angry because he doesn’t like losing it doesn’t bother me all that much. I’ll leave the bitching to others.

Some people like sticking the boot in when a man is down. Never fails to amaze me. I'm sure all those whinging are absolutely perfect individuals 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,505 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

As I said a few posts back, I like Shane when he's being charismatic and I dislike him when he's being a childish twat.

You think he can actlike a twat because it shows a competitive edge. Whatever that means. Sounds like some pseudoscience bollix ology to me.

But everyone's entitled to their opinion.

basic fitness is a key requirement for success. It’s pretty basic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,505 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Well he's been successfully so that would contradict your point.

  • Registered Users Posts: 778 ✭✭✭Pdoghue

I think the point is that him being tetchy with people on the course affects Lowry himself! You might brush it off as not bothering you, and fair enough (the GAA support is irrelevant btw), but it clearly affects Lowry. He gets too easily wound up by these situations. He's clearly very talented, but as someone said above, not being able to put 4 rounds together is the difference between a top 50 player and a top 10 player. Contrast Lowry with Tiger and Scottie in terms of their demeanour. You can never tell from Tiger or Scottie from their demeanour what's happened before. It's that ability to move on to the next shot is what separates the very good players from the greats.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,648 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

They don’t all have the same demeanour. Someone like Rahm would often react with anger and frustration when things go wrong on the course. Has him being tetchy at times prevented him from winning more than he did? I don’t think so, I think him joining the LIV nonsense has been the main reason for his form falling off a cliff.

Lowry is not in that level of where Woods was or where Rahm was or Scheffler is now but he has enough quality and he has the desire and hunger that he can contend and win Majors. He’s already won one.

I’m sure he’ll reflect on that 3rd round and how he reacted to it when he came under pressure and hopefully use it to his advantage for Portrush next year when he could face similar weather conditions.

And By the way the GAA support is irrelevant but one of those posters on here that’s lining up to have a go at him brought up his GAA background with a snidey comment about it.

It’s tough to watch when Shane starts to lose his composure on the course. I get that he’s competitive and really wants to win but he needs to find a way to get out of his own way, when the red mist starts to descend.

Being a curmudgeon on the course is not a new phenomenon. It was said of Faldo that he had two moods. 1: Annoyed and 2: About to be annoyed. However, he was able to channel this anger effectively to his benefit.

I hope that Shane can learn a lot from this disappointment, because when he is in full swing and conditions are in his favour, he’s capable of winning any tournament.

I don't even think that Shane would dare to class himself with Tiger.

He's an emotional guy and I'm sure that he will regret Saturday. All the experts on Boards won't be able to change him at this stage. And while that emotion manifested itself in a negative way on Saturday, that same emotion has probably been a huge factor in him having the career he has had.

He's never going to be as steely focused as Tiger, few/none are.

I don't think he's ever going to be a solid Top 10 golfer either, and iirc, he said as much in an on course interview / vlog earlier this year. Something along the lines of him being way too streaky of a player.

Shane seems to have accepted who he is, the positives and the negatives. Maybe others could do so as well, he really aint for changing at this stage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 778 ✭✭✭Pdoghue

I think you're making my point for me unbeknownst.

I didn't say they 'all' had the same demeanour. I said Tiger and Scottie differ from Lowry in that regard. Yes, Lowry has enough quality, desire, and hunger to win, but I would argue that Tiger and Scottie deal with adversity better.

Rahm is another hothead. Where is your evidence that his tetchiness/hotbeadedness has NOT cost him winning more? I would agree with you that his form has dropped since joining LIV.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,648 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

There is no way of proving that one way or the other. Before he went to that Liv nonsense Rahm was the best in the world there for a couple of years. That hot headedness that is part of his make up didn’t stop him getting to number one in the world is all we can say for definite.

Shane is a different level but that part of his personality that blew up in the 3rd round and had a detrimental effect on his chances is part of his competitive nature. He wouldn’t have got into contention in the first place if he didn’t have that competitive aggressive side to him. He doesn’t like losing. He has one Major and loads of money, he could easily sit back and rest on his laurels. He wants to win more. If you were to take away his hatred of losing he’d no longer be a contender for these tournaments. Ideally you want that competitiveness allied with being cool calm and collected. They’re not all built like that though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52,807 ✭✭✭✭tayto lover

I'd say that LIV giving Rahm 550 million, a private jet and 10 staff took a bit of the appetite from him. It would with me anyway.

Never really recovered from double bogey on 8th Saturday, maybe been listening too much to Rory in his ear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,203 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

He missed a bunch of short putts so he could have shot +2 or 3.

  • Registered Users Posts: 320 ✭✭kyleman

He has only 1 win on the PGA tour since 2019 and that was with Rory in his ear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,540 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

Yeah, you already said that he’s moving on. He was hardly going to tell the Irish Examiner that he was going to dwell on the last 2 round of The Open for the next 6 months, was he?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,540 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

No it isn’t. No such tournament in golf. But you knew that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,183 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

He's been selected as a flag bearer for the Olympics….well deserved although I was certain that it might be Rory as he would span both communities on the island. I'm sure Shane will be proud as punch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,505 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Wouldn't know what flag Rory would walk out with..
