Actually you can without key or without digital key, you just open the car with the app and can start.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,020 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

So no passcode or Face ID to access & drive away? Seems sorta ‘insecure’. Physical key doesn’t bother me in fairness. Need to have house keys anyway as I’m not at digital hall door stage and likely won’t bother . It’s just a handy gimmick for me personally but I can see how others would appreciate being ‘keyless’ when they’re out and about.

Mine will drive just using the app, open using the app and it will fire up and drive away, key left in the house. My samsung phone not compatible for digital key it seems

  • Registered Users Posts: 131 ✭✭Sealman

I would still use the key myself as well like you have house keys on the keyring . Just tried it to see if it would drive without the key and it does

No passcode or Face ID required for your keys either. So same security.

Tesla also have pin to drive which could easily be implemented by BYD. Adding an additional layer of security.

This might be a surprise to you, but like most cyclists, I'm a driver.

  • Registered Users Posts: 131 ✭✭Sealman

It asks for a pincode when you press unlock in the app and you can set it up for biometric fingerprint entry when opening the app itself so there is some security built into it

Any sign of the base spec, small battery model? Something to compete with the 38k M3 SR.

  • Registered Users Posts: 131 ✭✭Sealman

I wonder if that car will ever come to Ireland especially as max range is 460 km which means in reality it will be about 350 km

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,433 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

I don’t think it specifically needs to now. The base Design Seal is €43,950 with the recent price drops / incentives.

In NZ the smaller battery one is over 4k cheaper than the other version.

I think it would sell well at anything under 40k here. 460km WLTP is enough for most people.

Looks like the Ozzies are receiving the 1.2.1 update which is going to take care of the sensitivity of the FCTB entering roundabouts. Has only happened to me twice, but jesus, it was extremely harsh on both occasions, and unnecessary.

Didn't realise there was a price drop on the Seal. Thought it was just the Atto and Dolohin

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,020 ✭✭✭✭dodzy

Seal is still the same price as it was when I purchased in April. They are running a promo on the other 2 models, they are saying, for the month of July. As an example, the Dolphin Design is currently reduced to €30,809 and this will increase by €2,333 next month. Again, this is what the dealer is saying.

  • Registered Users Posts: 131 ✭✭Sealman

    That's what I thought

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,433 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Apologies. It was demo cars I was looking at for €43,950. So the RWD Seal is still €46k!

I knew of the Atto and Dolphin drops so just thought it was extended to the Seal.

anyone lose connection with the app today or is just a “me “ problem

  • Registered Users Posts: 131 ✭✭Sealman

    Mine is fine

  • Registered Users Posts: 151 ✭✭DEFIE

long press reboot in the car kicked it back to life

    Sentinel for BYD Seal.

Will take a look when back in the country.

Not sure it’s worth the effort. You have to go back to 2307 and do the “side loading thing “. Appears to be quite an intensive process.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,662 ✭✭✭yllw.ldbttr

Not if you installed the installer apps?, I am on the OTA but retained the ability to sideload.

Considering having solar panels installing so that I can run car on solar. How are people who have had them put in finding it? Is it a worthwhile investment?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,202 ✭✭✭RainInSummer

I'm finding them good for my particular site. In since 2019 or 2020 I think. Wish I got more tbh.

  • Registered Users Posts: 151 ✭✭DEFIE

Could not be happier. Best investment I have ever made. Not every home is created equal though roof direction and any shading can have an impact. Luckily I was completely south facing and installed 11 panels and a 5kWh battery.

I don’t run the car from the sun though. I charge overnight on the low ev rate and export the excess energy during the day. On my plan I make more that way

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,433 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

I have a 4.7kw system since 2017. 5.2 kWh battery and hot water divertor. system is brilliant. I don’t specifically use it for the car, I do what I do normally and let the system run itself.

At the end of the day, you’ll save from the generation going into your car but you’ll pay when using it in the home or vice versa.

There’s a lot of people that spend their days load shifting, calculating weather, plugging in, smart monitoring etc That’s not for me.

Only advice I’ll give is to get as many panels as you can fit in your roof. Get the biggest array possible.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,116 ✭✭✭allinthehead

If you can afford it then it's a very worthwhile investment, as @Gumbo said maximise the array size, you won't regret it. We have a massively oversized array which gives good production in the winter months.

We have two Ev's, the M3 is the main workhorse and approx 25% of our charging is from the sun, our Ioniq is a runaround and approx 90% of the charging of that so far is from the sun(we only have it about 3 months).

Charging stats on the M3 for June. Peak time charging is from the panels.

Probably better off asking in the solar forum TBH.

We put in 20 panels, 6kw inverter, 3*5kwh batteries, hot water diverter (Eddi) and Zappi.

House running 2 EVs although my wife has free charging at work so 95% of her charging is done there.

I use Home assistant to automate the lot of it.

Fill the batteries when the solar forecast for the next day is low, so that I'm running the house on cheap night rate electricity (13 cent) rather than day rate.

Stuck with a D/N tariff on a D/N smart meter.

It's potentially marginally more cost effective to let the surplus flow to the grid at 18 cent and charge overnight at 13 cent but there are transmission losses too and personally it's cleaner for me to usually fill the car before I send to the grid, so I'll often do that. I reckon 95% of my car charging from April to September is via solar.

A really worthwhile investment, better ROI than most out there right now, especially if you are willing to put some effort into optimising your system, and obviously better for the planet if you care about that sort of thing.

Thanks for all the tips guys, very helpful. I am in discussions with the electrician who fitted the zappis and he specialises in solar as well to figure out the optimum setup for the house and looking at all the positive feedback here will probably go ahead with it

    Considering getting system installed also.

We use about 17,000kWh per year.

3000sqft A2 rated house, built 8 years ago with ground source heat pump. Our own well. 2 young kids so lots of washing and cooking and baths.
One electric car using roughly 3,000 of those units. Another diesel car that if replaced in few years would use similar units.

I work from home full time and wife a few days a week.

When you say massively oversized array, what size is it and how many units does your house use per year?
