Not really possible when a giant hulk is going to show up. I've seen some tweets saying how it feels like one of Ford's 90s thrillers, but those were made for adults.

Honestly doesn't seem to relate to the show at all, say they don't want to repeat the mistakes of Dr Strange.

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,132 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Was half expecting him to say he's better but at least they realised Sam has too much respect for Steve to say that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,697 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

That would bomb the movie harder than "WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME"

Are people just looking for reasons to be annoyed? Making up stuff.
There was an entire show dedicated to Sam's inferiority complex ffs. He is NEVER going to say he is better than Steve.

And, him saying 'i'm not' isn't meant to be a bad ass moment. the narrative of the trailer is: 'I'm not…. now watch me fly at supersonic speeds'. He's different. thats the damned point. Sam not being Steve is not a boast for him. Its a fact he has accepted. He's not steve but that doesn't make him wrong.

So Frank Castle/Punisher is in the new Captain America movie ?

That is some turnaround from even what was being reported last week. Maybe it has just been a case of public negotiating from both Feige and the Russos.

I think it would be the right decision even though I've heard the last few things they've done have been disappointing. Nobody can deny their involvement with the MCU was the peak for both parties.

They have another non-MCU film on the way it seems via Netflix: "The Electric State", an adaptation of a graphic novel of the same name; my expectations are pretty rock bottom 'cos The Gray Man was just awful and didn't suggest some untapped potential that they were being held back in the MCU. Can't speak to Cherry though it seemed to get a bit of a kicking too, while their Amazon series "Citadel" was $300 million spent on a show nobody watched.

Kinda speaks to a bit of desperation on both parties to return to the well in the face of flagging enthusiasm for the franchise. Infinity War / EndGame had no right to be even vaguely coherent given the plates it had to spin, and its success can be put at the feet of the Russos, no question. But I see nothing to suggest they're anything except hacks as actual filmmakers.

That is a bit of a sign of… well, not desperation… but concern about the next "Phase" of movies. Sure, there was a conscious decision to have a uniform style of output: There was little scope for directors to put their mark on the Marvel movies. Of course Ragnarok was an exception (Which was over-egged in the last Thor movie. VERY poor) and Age of Ultron and a couple of the earlier movies did have touches of Joss Whedon's quippy banter. And there were elements of Shane Black-isms in Iron-Man 3.

But, in general, as mentioned by many before, they were all (intentionally) director neutral. Having said that, I did like the last 2 Captain America movies and the last Avengers movies for what they were.

As I have mentioned before, I don't know the comics so have no opinion on how certain characters should be portrayed (For example, I thought the reveal of Kingsley's Mandarin was genuinely funny but can understand if it horrified long-term readers). So I don't know the comics but I believe that it's now pretty official that all that Kang stuff is scrapped. They can put it down to the case(s) against the actor but, IMHO, I think it was mainly down to the build up simply not clicking: Confused, oversaturated and underwhelming storylines.

It seems that Deadpool 3 will actually have a proper impact on the future movies (I assumed this was initially a joke but early reports are that, no, this is genuine) and X-Men and Fantastic Four now back in the fold, I wonder where they will go instead of Kang. Is Doctor Doom too small? Galacticus too big? I haven't a scooby-doo

It looks like the FF and Galactus are taking centre stage at comic Con tomorrow for Marvel. There's videos going around of a drone show they did after a Deadpool 3 viewing teasing Galactus. I won't share it here but it looks promising.

New name announced for the next Avengers movie and an unexpected casting announcement for the related villain to replace Kang. Putting behind a spoiler but this is probably going to be unavoidable, it's everywhere already.

Avengers: Doomsday with Robert Downey Jr cast as Dr Doom.

So basically the exact swing I suspected Marvel would take out of panic over flat lining interest in the MCU. The pay cheque being written must be immense, given it was already gigantic in the first place.

Not sure spoilers should count here: it was a "public" announcement at the biggest fan convention on the planet. It's gonna get publicised by dint of its madness

Edit: indeed I see the headline everywhere "spoiling" the announcement

    "Let's not mention Blade"

I noticed they didn't do a release timeline this year. Guess they knew better.

So biggest MCU star and directors drafted in. If this doesn't revive things, I assume nothing will. Cynical move. This is merely a jump start. Evidently, this doesn't solve the MCU's problems.

So... I wonder what they are going to say is the reason that it's the same guy they all know and love? That in his universe, he became Doom instead? But he's a completely different character, either way, I'm very intrigued to see what they do and should get to show off his more serious and sinister acting.

Pay cheque was likey blank with a begging note attached. He could pick WTF he wanted.

Crazy stuff alright, I guess it is a variant from the Loki stuff.

After Endgame, he probably said, back in a minute, just going to win an Oscar.

For those of us just out of Deadpool & Wolverine this isn't that big of a surprise.

  • Registered Users Posts: 45,950 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

I've genuinely no idea what you're getting at there.

Why is it no surprise? What in deadpool made Rdj doom obvious?

Quite desperate IMO. It'll be costly for them as well. I can't see anyone who'd had enough of the MCU rushing to go see this on the back of this announcement.

For secret wars to matter, you need characters from other time lines that matter, and the audience wants to see.

A merged time line is meaningless if you only care about the people in the sacred time line.

    Deadpool.

    X23

    Maybe logan?

    Fantastic four.

    Rdj doom.

They're way late in setting this up imo, spider man was the only movie to offer it but no way tobey or garfield stick around

Downey and his wife have been doing much producing work, so this MCU "work" is probably gonna fund a tonne of future productions.

Desperate doesn't begin to cover it. Hard not to think this is a maniacal swing by someone clear out of ideas and worried about the future

Going back to the same well doesn't inspire major confidence.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,163 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Chris Evans back as Jonny Storm instead of Steve Rodgers.

In fairness, as much as it can be seen as a panic move, I'm way the f*ck more interested in RDJ playing the villain as a Stark/Doom mashup than I would have been if they just brought him back as Iron Man again, whether original MCU or just a slightly different variant.

Money was obviously a big factor, as was needing to try right the ship by bringing back RDJ and the Russos, but at the very least RDJ as Doom shows they're going to try do something different and interesting with it.
