Should I try to get the faulty gearbox on my 2010 VW Polo repaired or replaced?

My wife’s 2010 VW Polo (1.2L petrol engine, approx. 86,000kms on the clock, manual gearbox) struggles to move into fifth gear.

Given the cost of buying a replacement car, would appreciate advice re which of the following steps (if possible) offers the best value before I talk to my local repairer:

Repairing the existing gearbox (assuming is possible)?

    Fitting an reconditioned gearbox?

    Getting a new gear box?

Thanks in advance for your advice

The first step is to get an accurate diagnosis of the problem.

It might not actually be in the gearbox. It could be a linkage or clutch problem.

Thanks for the informative answer, BB. Already spent about E1,000 on other problems with the car this year and knowing zilch about card was horrified by the cost of installing a replacement gearbox

Don't have a quote yet. Just asking for rough ideas as to what at the problem might be and ballparks as to how much it might cost to fix before going to the repair shop.

BB's answer was great in that he identified issues I hadn't\t considered which might be a lot less problematic to sort out

But sure how can someone diagnose over the internet. As someone has already said it may be a simple fix

No one can give advice on best option unless you know what's wrong with it and the cost to repair

Bring it up to the guys in Bohernabreena - top notch work with warranty.

gearbox replacemnt should be straight forward in this. talking around 1k at a complete guess. cost of gearbox, 300 ish, labour 3-400. ish. incidentals. for 300. mechanic may advise to reaplce the clutch since its that deep into the engine. theres quite low mileage, so unusual for gearbox to go.

Thanks for replying = As specified, am not asking for a diagnosis, just advice as to what might be wrong, and how much it might cost to fix.

A manual polo gearbox should be a viable repair at that age.
