Few championships have got underway around the country

What are the official rules from Croke Park around starting club championships with the Split Season? Seems that some counties have started and some only starting next weekend. My understanding was that counties needed to wait until the Inter county Season was finished but there seems to be some leeway here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,160 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Think every county can do what they want, the Kilkenny football final was in May.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 941 ✭✭✭Stationmaster

If their county is out of the championship then they don't need to wait till it's all over? Counties can start when they want though they obviously wait till their county involvement is over. Croke Park don't dictate the dates to them - counties will have the provincial club dates so they'll know when to have their county championships over by.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭HurlingBoy

Surely this is against the ethos of the split season where the club player is meant to be given certainty on when the championship will start?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 941 ✭✭✭Stationmaster

Most counties would have agreed the dates for the championship early in the year so the club player is looked after.

For example, in Clare, championship was due to start last weekend but would be put back a fortnight if Clare hurlers got to the all ireland - all club players knew this so would have been happy. I'd imagine it's the same in nearly all other counties.

Reverse happened in Kerry - game were brought foward when Kerry didn't make the final.

Senior Club and Intermediate championship started last weekend : Junior starting this weekend.

Each County, or at least the ones I am aware of set two starting dates one for if they don't reach the AI and one for if they do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭HurlingBoy

If counties are doing their own thing it makes a mockery of the split season. There isn't much certainty for players if there is one date and then another date if team is in All Ireland. Might as well go back to the old system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,160 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Not really it's probably only 2 weeks of a difference so for example could be either end of July or Mid August so lads have a fair idea overall. 28 of 32 counties aren't effected by the AI finals in fairness.

Exactly, it's only 2 weeks. The club player just wants certainty - or as close to possible as that - and they are getting that at the moment.

Enda Rowland scored 1-1 from pucks outs today. And another point from inside his own 21. Hurley sizes and the sliothar needs to be seriously looked out. Equipment is making a laughing stock of the size of the pitch. Minors scoring points from their own half back line…

Went to the Waterford semi finals today. Mount Sion v Abbeyside was an entertaining match. While Abbeyside eventually pulled away to win by 10, it was fairly close until late in the game. They look a good team who could throw it down to Ballygunner in the final. Rian Walsh and Wille Beresford caught the eye, along with Conor Prunty, who wore 3 but played out the field. Alan Kirwan did a lot of damage for Mount Sion but supply of ball dried up in the second half. Aussie Gleeson was impeccable on the frees but only showed flashes from general play.

Abbeyside's third goal was a thing of beauty, lovely passes from Mikey Kiely and Beresford in the build up.

Ballygunner v Passage was a poor game, lot of errors and plenty of frees blown. No real shape to the game. Passage ultimately didn't have the firepower to trouble Ballygunner. Mark Fitzgerald played as a sweeper for most of the game and was their best player. Pauric Mahony, Patrick Fitzgerald and Hutchinson did enough damage up front for a fairly comfortable win.

If Abbeyside can reproduce the form in the final they'd go close.

long wait for whoever wins it , most club championships are only starting or 1/3 of the way through, ballygunner will be massive favorites but the teams around them are starting to get closer from what i have seen

Are Ballyhale eliminated in Kilkenny and it's Shamrocks vs James Stephens in a relagation playoff ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,160 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

No its a relegation semi final where the loser goes into the relegation final and winner into the quarter final of the actual championship.

So 12 teams in 2 groups of 6, top 2 in each group straight into the QF, 3rd and 4th in each group play each other in preliminary QF, winner into QF loser is out. 5th and 6th in each group play each other in games which double up as preliminary QF and relegation SF if that makes sense.

Interesting format and probably the only county who's 'club leagues' matter

    Some showing from Thomastown

Is the Eskimo Brian Cody still in charge of James Stephens ?

The man wears so many layers

One comment from being at the Laois semi finals today.....the black card/penalty desperately needs to be brought in to the club game. Camross denied two blatant goal scoring opportunities by a deliberate trip and rugby tackle. Rules reward fouling at the minute....

    Definitely

Was going half mad looking through individual counties websites etc

The GAA really need to create it's own version of 'Sofascore'

    Ballyhale beaten in quarter final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,112 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

    Some result for Thomastown

Shows age catches up with these great clubs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,936 ✭✭✭deisedude

Thomastown are really good. Wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they won Kilkenny outright

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,112 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Didn't they only come up from Intermediate a few years back?

Ironically a lot of good work done for them by Kilkenny and Ballyhale great Henry Shefflin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,936 ✭✭✭deisedude

They won the All Ireland intermediate last year hammering all round them on the way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,112 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Aren't Cuala in a relagation playoff in the Dublin hurling ?

Another past All Ireland winning club

Should be two good afternoon's action next weekend in Athenry for the Galway 1/4s.

A good Loughrea team should have too much for Castlegar who are fortunate enough to be there.

The others look close enough on paper.

Can Turlough', in terrific group form, finally get over their Thomas' hoodoo? The latter have misfired a bit in earlier rounds and maybe mileage is finally starting to catch up with them, but they tend to improve and become more dangerous from now on.

Sarsfields / Cappy is a derby match and hard to call too. Darren Morrissey is out for the season and doubts remain about Joe Cooney's availability. Cappy put a few indifferent performances behind them to hit better form in the pre-lim match, with the Collins brothers in excellent shape.

Tommy Larkins have been the surprise packet of the championship, beating St Thomas' to top spot in the group stages. In other years they wouldn't be given much hope against Clarinbridge, but the latter haven't looked invincible this year either, with some key players struggling with form and injury.

    Verdicts; Loughrea, Turloughmore, Sarsfields, Clarinbridge.

Must take some balls/appetite to win 2 or more All Ireland clubs in a row

Ballygunner last gasp winners in 21/22 and along with been 3 in a row Munster winners (going for 4 this year) but have since not made another All Ireland Final

Must be a case of some lads 'easing a bit' after reaching the Golden grail

    Another shock in Kilkenny

Brian Cody's James Stephens relagated to Intermediate by Glenmore

On the one hand a perfect opportunity for Cody to lead them to All Ireland Intermediate glory but that's easier said then done

seems like St Thomas's love living on the edge, every year they are put to the pin of the collar in a few of the Galway championship games but somehow always squeak over the line, a sure sign of a great team,

who would bet against them being the last team standing come next January

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,112 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Ballygunner need to win the All Ireland again but have a hard QF game in Munster against The Limerick Champions in the Gaelic Grounds then a possible semi final against the Tipp winners

Not many 'new teams' emerging from the Munster county Championships. Always feel a club who win there first county title in a long time are less fussed about the Provincial titles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,486 ✭✭✭MfMan

A team with more grit than Turlough' yesterday would have accounted for them. For some reason, they baulk at the sight of the Thomas' jersey and a number of their better players didn't show up, unlike all during the group stages.

Sixmilebridge stuck it out V Inagh Kilnamona in Clare. Theres bad blood between these clubs over the past number of years. Inagh would be seen as abit uncouth ...big into fist pumping. I.K have never won a county and of course Sixmilebridge are perrinial challengers even if they are lacking star quality. Due to numbers ..they rarely have a weak position . Game went to penalties and Fahy for the Bridge won it for them.

Feakle are through on the other side. Another East Clare Club but alot further north and very rural. Great tradition of hurling and music up their way and they've a great underage record v Sixmilebridge. They are big ,physical men . Should be a great final and from a Sixmilebridge point of view may the best team win.

GAA need to force the Galway hurling champions into Either Leinster or Munster

It's not fare how there champions swan straight into the All Ireland series every year while the others fight it out in the Provincial series
