I'd like to see the economics of an air-dome facility - along the lines of the Connaught GAA Centre of Excellence. Much lower construction costs and the operating costs seem to be low (the GAA were saying that the air dome was costing ~ €100 / day in 2020 (so probably €200 / day now). There are at least 2 other air-dome tracks in the EU - France and Slovenia.

The Raymond Poulidor velodrome is an interesting example as it someone earlier in the thread (as in > 10 years earlier) suggested putting a room over Sundrive. The RP velodrome is exactly that - a dome over a pre-existing 250m concrete track. Its about half the area of the GAA dome so not exactly the bleeding edge of the technology.

In fairness, the Connacht gaa dome gets some amount of use along with their outdoor pitches.

Second level schools games, primary schools blitzes, 3rd level games, club games, county games.

Yep it'll be owned and run by the Sports Campus, CI will have 0 involvement in it bar paying to use it. They can advise on it technically, but nothing outside that.

Interestingly when the National Indoor Arena was built, AAI didn't use it because it was too expensive to hire, and I think they still use it rarely relative to need. There are other ones they use more.

Hope they can come to a feasible arrangement though. Velodrome are extremely expensive to run. The temperature and humidity systems alone are super pricey as they have to run 24/7 or the wood will warp/swell etc

This is Ireland where all the world data centers are set up due to our climate…Id imagine we are literally the best climate for a velodrome.

Don't the data centeres use more energy than all domestic total?

And they're here for tax reasons, not climate ones. No where is damper than Ireland!

Not sure why them using more energy than all domestic is an issue and if they wanted to avoid tax they would just all set up in Hungary.

I know the planning application for this was posted somewhere, but nice to see it made official: https://www.rte.ie/news/munster/2024/0828/1467105-velodrome-limerick/
