Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Yes I'd like to see more variety and not just depend on Ryanair. Maybe extended service on some existing summer routes. Would like to see them attract others like TAP, Lisbon has great potential not only as a destination for Irish holiday makers but since AL last ran it we have a lot more south Americans living in the region. TAP have recently announced significant expansion in Brazil. Maybe get Iberria back in the madrid route. Will probably take 12 months or more to see an impact of the proposal

    Yep more KLM, Air France or Lufthansa would be nice. I appreciate they're simply feeding their hubs but hopefully they're enjoying general route success in Cork too.

    Munich, Berlin with Lufthansa for instance, or some of Air France's many hubs would be nice.

    Not sure how much more KLM could do but maybe using the same Schiphol aircraft they could do something.

    Maybe Turkish to feed their network. What other big players are capped in Dublin? The middle eastern airlines? Surely a lot of their traffic aren't Dub based all week

    With regards to Lufthansa, I'd settle for year round service and/or equipment upgrades on the Frankfurt route. The CRJ-900 might be economical, but boy is it cramped! The same goes for Paris, having a year-round CDG route would be a quick win.

    Beyond that, I think TAP is a good call, as it would not only serve the "shovel & bucket" summer flights, but would also allow for easy onward transfers to Brazil. I'd also love for one or two Eastern European airlines, ideally the likes of LOT or Smartwings, to start serving Cork. Connections to Warsaw and Prague would be a real boost. And we nearly had flights to Prague back in the mid-2010s, with the moribund Czech Airlines, no less. They were cancelled mere weeks before they were to start, so someone's already crunched the numbers, and if CSA was willing to take the leap with their inflated cost base, a low-cost carrier like Smartwings should definitely be able to make it work.

    Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

    To be fair, the new airport IS the old airport. The terminal that Ryanair and other low cost carriers used for their flights was the old main terminal from back in the day when the airport was known as "Berlin Schönefeld" and was the main airport of East Germany. When the decision was made to consolidate the three Berlin area airports (Tegel, Tempelhof, Schönefeld) into one, it seemed easiest to just "bolt on" a new runway and terminal complex south of the existing runways, rather than converting a greenfield or brownfield site.

    Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

    Basically a who’s who of dream operators for Cork. Imagine if they had extended the runway during Covid, would be so well positioned now.

    I flew out of Cork Friday on LH A319 and back Sunday on wet leased CRJ1000 by CityJet. A319 definitely better experience.

    AFAIK Lufthansa is phasing out CRJ900 anyway and replacing with A220. Have only been on A220 with AF but that's a nice and modern plane, probably more economical than the older CRJ900.

    Only from Kerry AFAIK. As much as I'd love a direct flight to Berlin since I go there every few weeks mostly with KLM via Amsterdam, I think it's unlikely. Lufthansa only flies to their hubs FRA and MUC with their Eurowings doing all other short haul routes with not many flights out of Berlin. Don't understand though why Aer Lingus doesn't set up a flight once or twice a week.

    Berlin is quite a thin route, not much business traffic - poor enough yields. Good for getting a bargain!

    Not too long ago KLM were doing 3x Amsterdam rotations, so lets have that back please, or use bigger aircraft. Every flight I've been on is stuffed. Though Schiphol have its own problems with a stupid government angrily trying to restrict its movements.

    (While we're at it, maybe KLM 2x Shannon - Amsterdam too)

    Air France should be year round - thats the easiest win of them all I think

    Ryanair - more Gatwicks, one at varying times of the day is not enough.

    I think you might be a bit off there, started as 1x daily in 2020 and increased to 2x daily with the nightstop added after the runway reconstruction opened in Nov 21, has remained as such since.

    Aer Lingus have been 9x - 11x weekly depending on the time of year since covid

    Nah, I definitely remember there being three flights with KLM to AMS at one stage a few years ago. It went down to two and then to one for a while (which was a right PITA) but is now back up to two with the later flight into Cork pushed right back to one of the last departures out of Schiphol.

    Its hard to compare the KLM and Aer Lingus offerings. Most KLM traffic is feeder traffic to their network, which is exactly what we need from Cork I think and I use them all the time for heading to European destinations. Aer Lingus is not transfer traffic, it is "visiting Amsterdam".

    Anyone used the Aer Lingus evening before bag drop at the airport recently - work ok? I wonder, must you drop all of your bags at the same time. Going as a family of 5 soon with 2 x 20kg bags and 5 x 10kg bags and ideally would drop, say, the 2 x 20kg bags and 3 or 4 of the 10kg bags the night before....

    Your point about the Aer Lingus route reminds me of the fact that it's the real practical route for so much of that part of Europe. For getting to the NRW region in Germany, Belgium or even Luxembourg it's really the best option.

    I've used the CRL route and whilst handy and extremely affordable, you can be waiting a similar amount of time in a queue for the shuttle bus as the actual journey itself. Schiphol with the train station is just so much easier, that's before we even start talking about the airport layout and facilities.

    Overall, any sort of Aer Lingus route into one of the German airports, Brussels Zaventem and/or Luxembourg would be a great help to me, especially with the early flight out being impossible to reach from outside of the Netherlands in time.

    Does anyone know how the routes are decided on?

    Is it at the discretion of airlines, whatever they think will be profitable?

    Does the airport actively lobby for routes, or the city council lobby for routes, or Chamber of commerce? How does it work? Is there a review process or some data they review?

    Totally the discretion of the airline. The airline is the one with the ultimate financial responsibilities.

    Airports can offer financial incentives to airlines, and busier airports have slot restrictions, after that it's pretty much the airlines discretion.

    One thing that doesn't achieve new routes is councillors talking waffle in news articles.

    some months ago Qatar were in talks with Cork airport as they are at capacity ex Dublin and cannot increase due to the flight cap. These talks seem to have failed which is a great pity as a Middle Eastern airline opens up huge destinations.

    I’d seriously doubt a 787 can take off from Corks runway anyway so no idea how they could operate out of there, and the 78 is the smallest aircraft that have with the range to do DOH-ORK

    They have lots of 737 Max which are at least in theory in range. It’s about 1,000 km further than providence but it’s over land not an ocean which would help.

    Actually forgot about the Max’s yeah. I’d still be dubious about range considering DY had issues using them with a lighter “lost cost” cabin, but it would be great to see.

    From my understanding, Norwegian mainly had the issues with the regular 737-800, which they used in the beginning because of delivery problems for the Max8. The Max8 that took me to Providence and back all the way back in 2018 certainly didn’t have any blocked-off rows, just three seats at the front and back reserved for crew rest.

    Doha would be a tight squeeze with regards to distance though. From what I can see, the great circle route would work out well enough at 5800 kilometres, which is well within the Max8’s maximum range of 6690 kilometres. Real life flight plans could really bite into that though, especially when it comes to avoiding the likes of Syria or Iraq.

    @thomil ah right, I’m not too clued in on the 73M’s so wasn’t sure. I think we both agree in theory they have the range but, in real life it’s a different story?

    Just had a look at some performance graphs and it looks like the runway is just long enough for a 73M at MTOW, so I’ll conclude it won’t realistically make it to DOH, so any QR route would either be payload limited or or have a tag-on. I’d love to be proven wrong but I just don’t see it as viable, especially when DUB is up the road and they recently increased capacity there. Maybe this is why the supposed talks failed?!?

    Qatar were one of the airlines refused slots for Dublin this winter. If they wanted to add capacity to Ireland but felt the wide bodies couldn’t get enough pax at Shannon a 737 max to Cork may make sense. Would be interesting if the OP here added any more context.

    Sorry, even though it was I that wrote the original post re Qatar, I don’t have a lot more info, a few months ago I was listening to a radio interview with some senior member of cork airport management and he said that they were in advanced talks with Qatar as they needed more capacity ex Ireland and there were no further slots available in Dublin , there wasn’t a lot more than that to it

    Qatar previously ran a Cardiff-Doha service, would it be an option to run Cork as an add on to that one? Cork-Cardiff-Doha

    Would be very attractive to Cork pax if it was a brief layover in Cardiff to refuel and take on additional pax/cargo. Would take a few hours off Cork-Aus/NZ with the long/stressful LHR layovers involved

    I don’t, but I’ve researched it thoroughly as I’m a member of Qatar privilege club, and found zero updates. So I’m assuming it fell through.

    Qatar don’t like to be tied to one aircraft type, and the cork airport member stated in that radio interview that the Boeing 737 max was the only suitable aircraft for this route.

    However if it had happened, I personally think it would have been a phenomenal success, opening up the entire east to Munster based flyers.

    The representative also stated that Cork-Dublin flights were being looked at and while won’t happen in the short term, he was confident that they would in the long term, he claimed (and I doubt this is correct) that Dublin is the 5th most connected airport in Ireland, and as Irish travellers sights change to destinations beyond Europe, that a Cork Dublin connection would certainly be viable.

    Has anyone travelled to Bruges from Cork for a weekend away? If so did ye go Amsterdam or Charleroi? I'm trying to work out what the best route would be because the Charleroi timings are absolutely god awful. I have no idea how Ryanair expect it to be a success

    I did a trip to Belgium via Charleroi - Friday early out/Sunday mid-afternoon back. Didn't travel to Bruges on that occasion but stayed in Mons. Easy to get to the station in Charleroi using the local bus but there are regular Flibco buses to Brussels.

    Amsterdam might suit better with its early in , late out, flights but it is a longer trek to Bruges from there and probably a bit pricier.

    I did a day trip from both Brussels (not Charleroi) and Amsterdam. It’s much easier to go from Brussels but both are doable, especially if you are spending the night in Bruges. It’s obviously a lot easier to get from Cork to Amsterdam than Cork to Brussels. It’s really up to you and what you want out of the trip and where you prefer your hassle.

    Thank you. It would be for a nice romantic city break away, so I suppose Amsterdam would make everything a bit easier to organsie even if it does take a bit longer. Charleroi just isn't really working with flight times. The Sunday flight back would be at 6.50 in the morning and I have no idea how anyone is supposed to get to the airport on time. Saturday evening would be wiped out by that flight time too.

    If you're going for a short period and trying have a lovely time then that flight is useless for you and ye'd have no comfort or enjoyment.

    If it's an option you could go out to Charleroi and back from Amsterdam .

    AMS to Bruges via train is expensive. It is very easy and stress free though. Change in Antwerp or Brussels so you can do a short visit at those cities too. Or Rotterdam. Charleroi airport and bus is certainly cheaper but slightly less romantic let's say.
