Electric Gates

I'm considering automating existing metal swing gates. Duct between pillars is already there. Power easily provided. My Q is, nowdays how is open-on-exit configured. In a previous work place an in-ground induction loop was used . From my recent searches, they all seem to talk about using photo cell detection. I don't see any mention of ground loops. So I'm wondering how is the difference between vehicles and people moving around the garden/driveway detected.
