Game being carried on FTA terrestrial TV on Tg4 this year I see.

Is it the first time a college football game has ever got a free to air broadcast in Ireland? Don’t recall any of the recent ones before doing so (the 2022 game didn’t even get a pay TV broadcast because the US rights were with Fox).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 554 ✭✭✭csirl

For these games, most of the tickets are sold in bulk to "ticket wholesalers" who in turn sell onto the various travel agents offering packages. Only a small number are sold as ticket only via ticketmaster.

You would expect unsold tickets to appear on the market close to the event when the travel agents stop taking package orders. With the exception of the ND games, no previous game had ever sold out. Always plenty of tickets - often free - floating around the week of the game.

    I believe so, yes.

The Irish commentary should be interesting….what's Line Backer as gaelige?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,922 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Would be surprised if it’s anything other than the unadulterated ESPN broadcast. I mean, I know there’s always a first time for everything but think about it - there is no person on the planet who has ever professionally commentated an American football game through Irish before. How do you fill that job?

The game *should* also be live on Sky Sports, this is the second year of a two year deal for ESPN College Football.

SBB will probably be on the job....

I see this is being advertised as sold out.

I just don't believe it, like how. It's never been a sell out really and the pricing is bonkers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,450 ✭✭✭Shedite27

Probably 40 tickts left on ticketmaster so not many available anyway. There's always a disconnect between "full house" and "sellout", between no-shows, tickets not used etc but it'll be very close to full

TG4 are probably not very happy that VMTV Two have a live NFL preseason game right up against the CFB. An odd state of affairs, two American football games on Irish free to air TV at the same time!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 554 ✭✭✭csirl

Yes, that's correct. There's a difference between a sell out and a full house. The bulk of tickets in this sort of event are sold to "ticket wholesalers" who in turn sell onto travel agents and people selling hospitality packages. I dont doubt that the organisers have shifted all the tickets, but that doesnt mean the wholesalers and agents and others a step or two further along the supply chain have sold the tickets they"ve purchased.

Virgin are strange bedfellows.for the NFL to have here. They are a cheap ass set of stations, happy to. Relay cheap ass ITV programs, including this NFL preview show, which in itself is a cheap ass clone of the show that was on BBC for years.

Pity in a way NFL. Europe wouldn't ally.woth tg4 to develop.or even Rte to develop a FTA presence in Ireland, it won't happen with Virgin I can tell you. I understand fully the NFL and CFB are separate, but still, a overall strategy would make sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 554 ✭✭✭csirl

NFL and CFB are competitors in the International market. While clashes dont help fans who want to see both, its good that the NFL is taking specific actions to develop the Irish fanbase.

The ticket situation this year is so bonkers. I've been to these College games in the past and been able to get something last minute cheap but no such luck this year. I'm in the UK these and held off on booking travel until tickets were sorted but think I'm just going to book travel now and cross fingers I get a ticket....

I remember they used to do High School games at Donnybrook the day before. Any word on if that sort of thing is going on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭el Fenomeno

    Yep, in Donnybrook again.

"his year will include three games on Friday which includes:

    - Mclay School vs Windham School

    - IMG Academy vs Episcopal School of Dallas

    - AFI Junior Wolfhounds vs Great Britain U19

Good chance at seeing some future NFL stars with IMG Academy. They've had at least 2 former students drafted for the last 6 years in a row, and a first round pick the last 5 years in a row.

At the moment, neither this game nor the episode of College GameDay immediately preceding it is in Sky Sports advance schedules. Hopefully it’ll be sorted nearer the time - Sky are showing one Week 0 game later that night so I don’t think it’s the question of rights (unless they’ve sublicensed it to TG4 which is why they aren’t showing it) but there are fairly full schedules on Sky Sports that day.

I'm confident the Sky Sports schedules are not updated, the below link on the College Football Ireland website published 8th August clearly states TG4 are showing it live for Ireland Sky Sports are covering the game for the UK. College Gameday was also screened live by Sky from mid last season when they obtained the rights I don't see why they wouldn't be showing the Dublin week 0 show live

I assume College Gameday in Dame Street will be free to access? I also see Pat McAfee is hosting his show live on the Friday in J.R. Mahon's and it's not ticketed first come first served, it's going to absolute mayhem when that pub opens for anyone trying to get in there with thousands of Americans over!

One week to go. Looking forward to this. Great to see how much the series is growing even from the Nebraska Northwestern game.

3 or 4 live podcasts being recorded from Dublin between Friday and Saturday. Will be a great excitement in the captial.

5pm much better kick off time compared to the 7pm last year.

Led to believe by some sources the Dublin game plus GameDay will be on Sky Sports+ (the replacement for what used to be the red button launched last week). I can’t confirm this myself unfortunately.

I might have 2 tickets available

Any tail gating happening on the day

JR Mahons has a tailgate party with a live Irish pro football podcast recording. It’s a ticketed event not sure if it’s sold out yet.

Sponsored by Budweiser last year their tailgate was pretty good. Good atmosphere

Is there any or much street parking near the Aviva these days.

Two years ago I parked in Ballsbridge Park in a area managed by APCOA but that doesn't seem to be a thing anymore.

And years ago I used to street park on Haddingron Rd or on lanes just off it.

Is there much street parking in the area ?

I parked at the RDS last year, was handy enough for a tenner.

anyone know what the flyover is this year?

I'm guessing that will be just open for the event, as their website says parking is Mon - Fri 7am to 7pm.

Handful of lower tier €100.00 priced tickets have appeared on ticketmaster now if anyone is looking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,448 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

166 resale tickets on Ticketmaster right now.

Anything from €55 for upper tier corner to €700+ for package type ones.

Kirk Herbstreit was saying on the Pat McAfee Show that the Florida State Athletic Director told him he expects 25,000 FSU fans to be in Ireland for the game.

If that's anyway close to accurate then it goes a long way to explaining the strong ticket demand since they went on sale.

Does anyone know if ponchos will be available to buy on the day if it rains?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,053 ✭✭✭✭cena

I just read that people have been queuing up since this morning for the pat McAfee show.

I was hoping to get in while up for the day

I got one last year outside the stadium. Did the job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,061 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

I would have loved to have gone to it but knowing the venue I didn't fancy taking the day off work to queue up in the morning with no guarantee I would get into see the show I'm guessing they have squeezed in about 50-60 people in there?

The show is hilarious, Seamus serving pints, Nick Saban coming in and the boys all getting wasted on Guinness. Pat is going to be a mess for College Gameday tomorrow!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,098 ✭✭✭Jofspring

McAfee is going to be dying tomorrow by the looks of it. Downing guinness all through the show.

I have to say it's a bloody good game of Football so far. Hats off to TG4. Their sports coverage is something else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

    Very enjoyable.

Couldn't make the game today, so watched on Tg4. Excellent coverage TBH, kept their cupla focal but also had some good guests, yer man Brophy came across well on his inserts in particular. I think they managed to balance the need to feed the people who are familiar with the game with newbies without completely dumbing it down. I had horrible visions of RTE covering the game, aotb Marty gurning and streesing his way through it and asking no mark RTE stars about their feelings.... Yuck!

Excellent job, hope they keep it in future.

Good game. First time sitting in the corner of an endzone for a football game, and I don't think I'd bother again. Very hard to tell how much yardage plays are making as they happen. Much better sitting along a sideline.

Again an excellent college football experience and a great game to go along with it

FSU were 10.5 point favourites and even though many thought that was high, few gave Georgia Tech a chance of winning the game outright.

I think what Ireland has harnessed here is something special and hopefully will continue for years to come.

College football is a unique sport because of the way it developed and continues to develop, and it's very hard for us over here to grasp the fandom and their passion and why they have that passion.

So to be able to in some way transplant some of that fandom and passion to Ireland for a few days is great.

The whole east stand was full of FSU fans doing the tomahawk chop.

Apparently there were 25,000 over for the game.

I've never been the NFL international series games but talking to someone who had been to one they said they had no atmosphere, it was just a stadium full of NFL fans from all over Europe, of all different teams watching a game, with a spattering of American fans.

You won't get 25,000* Jacksonville fans traveling to London to watch them.

The one thing I've noticed over the past few years is that one set of fans have vastly outnumbered the other.

Far more FSU than Georgia Tech yesterday, I'm guessing far more ND than Navy last year ( I wasn't there) and far more Nebraska than Northwestern a few years ago.

But next year is Farmaggedon, Kansas State v Iowa State.

But will bring a large number of fans, so it should be better again.

*I know Jacksonville might not even be able to bring 25,000 to a game at home:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,217 ✭✭✭Justin10

Enjoyed yesterday, I've been to lots of NFL and college games, and I dunno but yesterday it felt like there was way more then normal tv timeouts.

College gameday could of done with upping the volume a bit but it was a nice addition to the weekend.

College games in Ireland do have a better atmosphere then NFL Europe games in my experience but some have been damp squibs also.

College football can be hard also to follow live with how many subs they make.

Long may the college weekend continue.

Also aviva running out of soft drinks and beer in certain sections was bonkers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,879 ✭✭✭RayCon

Echo what's been said above. Had a great day at the game, thought the atmosphere was excellent. Had seats in section 501 - no complaints, had a pretty good view of the game. Not bad for €60 tickets. Surrounded mostly by noisy FSU fans with a great view of the FSU Band - love watching the drummers.

Hadn't been to a College Game since Penn State V's UCF in Croke Park in 2014 (I think) … won't leave it as long next time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,053 ✭✭✭✭cena

    Was there a flyover yesterday?

Being at a live game makes it harder to know what is happening than on TV.

My one complaint is I had a father behind me the whole game trying to tell his 2/3-year-old son the game's rules. That poor kid had no interest
