Indeed…and so the dominoes begin to tumble as a result of marginalising the more mature / discerning punter. Every festival is surely its own delicate ecosystem. Invasive species (people who prefer sad boys with guitars to the exclusion of most else) begin to proliferate once introduced to it and then use up a disproportionate amount of resources. Other species are pushed further out / die (boardsies), leaving a wilderness (Oxegen) in their wake. FR can't say they haven't been warned (via every other post on this thread since announcement #1). 'Explaining' the evolution of present-day festivals through stream-chat, changing demographics holds no water when you see so many people (more likely to be on the mature side / have a bit of disposable income) desperate to flog campervan / fancy camping tickets (hitherto worth their weight in gold). This is where it begins (ends)

Of the newly announced acts, I've only heard of two… Who both played last year.

Mary Wallopers are fun, but The Saw Doctors are the definition of "if there's nobody else on."

    Meh

    so….. where to next year?

There'll be some changes made to that clashfinder between now and the end of the month. Whoever did it has populated the stage splits into last year's stage times.

I read a comment elsewhere that suggests The **** are unlikely to be playing first on the folly so that's one change.

I've avoiding doing much EP research but I'm about to reach the end of the EOTR playlist so I might have to start shortly.

Wow that's bad, even for EP. I think no announcement would do less damage/outrage.

But it's done now and this time next week, we'll be knee deep in cans and craic.

They're going to need to contact Simon Cowell and get him to restart XFactor to drum up some acts to fill out the lineup for 2025!

So there are 4 relatively big acts that played last year - wallopers, saw doctors, wolfe tones and ethal cain?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 901 ✭✭✭dav09

Am honestly shocked the usual lowest common denominator acts like The Script, Coronas, Gavin James, Nathan Carter, etc. weren't added. But just as I thought it couldn't get any worse they find a even lower common denominator with Hermitage Green Green, Saw Doctors, etc. It's embarrassing, if it wasn't was for the Smirnoff surprise announcement along with Nas, Faithless and Kasabian I'd find it hard to justify going personally, and there's plenty of music fans attending not into those either. The Mary Wallopers decent but have seen them I'd say 12 times before and TPM even more, 2 or 3 somewhat decent Irish acts added there is all. Am still looking forward to it but feel it may be my last year now, but will enjoy it while I can.

Am concerned about camping too, last year they had to open an overflow campsite as it was so full and this year it looks even smaller? The silver/boutique has been moved from the other side of the road where Chaplin was, hopefully the other campsites have gotten much bigger but were dreadfully cramped the past 2 years. Also expect much longer walks than usual too from the red car park to the campsites, would hate to be walking from Red Car Park F to anywhere.

jazzy played last year as well in electric arena and Hannah Laing/skin on skin played terminus so 7 big acts are repeats

Poor enough effort. But TMW should be good and lively. And plenty of opportunities for crossover between them Kneecap and Lankum.

I’m actually livid. Partially with myself for believing that something decent would be added, but mostly at FR and how they’ve set fire to what was one of the best festivals in Europe. They’ve done real damage to their brand. You shouldn’t be going to a festival feeling cheated.

Every single person in my festival group has said that they aren’t going next year. Thats the guts of 20 people. Age range 35 to 55. All have signed up for ATN presale, with some having already made the switch.

I’m glad I went to BTP earlier in the summer and got to experience decent, properly curated acts and bookings with some imagination.

This EP will 100% be my last. Not only am I no longer their target audience, but it’s actually embarrassing to admit you’re going.

I’ll be down there next week. I’ll enjoy it with friends, and eek out some acts to see from the piss-stained mattress of a lineup, but I’ll also be happy in the knowledge it’s my last EP.

cain is likely bigger this year than last, was in the smallest arena tent so would expect an upgrade but yeah, not a good look.

The change in date this year is perplexing considering they said it was due to accomodate tour schedules. Looking at the line up who on it was worth shifting your set date for? Nothing jumping out at me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 79 ✭✭Ace of Hearts

I'd take either of them after seeing this latest announcement 😂 Given the ticket price, you'd expect to see more best in class acts, not acts that you could see in your local venue for 20 quid. In saying that, I'll have a good delve into the lesser known acts this weekend and pick out a few of them to see. In my experience, those acts at the smaller stages are often more enjoyable.

    grim for sure

as usual a lot of angry grumbling here while over on the Banter page its all "yay Mary Wallopers" "yay Saw doctors" i think a lot of here are just bona fide moany aul ones at this stage! how did this happen, Did i listen to too much Smiths as a child? the only person moaning over there is one of our stalwarts!! lol

Probably a stupid question about Moonlight Meadows but the email said entrance times on the Friday is 2pm-2am. Does this mean you’re not allowed access to the campsite until 2pm to leave all your stuff off? Seems fairly late in the day with acts usually kicking off around then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,843 ✭✭✭Mucker46

Have spent more and more time at the smaller stages over the years. Will be a lot of time there this year, some good acts, however the main arena is very poor for such a big festival in terms of well known artists from different genres. Some there for me Kasabian, Faithless, Stranglers, Nas (maybe) but not what it used to be for me so feels likes time to part ways.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,843 ✭✭✭Mucker46

Lot of yay TMW but a lot of not happy people also over there. We are grumpy but based on what we are used to from EP think it is justified. Happy to have lots of newer acts on the bill, even as an auld fella I like some of them, but for me the issues are a general drop in the quality of the acts even within a changing world and the amount of sameness, which shouldn't happen for a big festival. Will enjoy the weekend but feels like my last one.

Yeah but someone asked on the Banter page last week about who people would like to be added to the lineup. The responses made for depressing reading.

Gigs '24 - Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball (Gomez), The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Stendhal Festival, Forest Fest, Electric Picnic, Pixies, Ride, Therapy?, Public Service Broadcasting, IDLES(x2), And So I Watch You From Afar

Haven't a lot of acts used EP as the final date of a European tour previously. Any chance moving the dates forward has screwed them a bit there?

A very lazy announcement with few repeats, welcome in the Mary Wallopers as missed them at ATN so will definitely catch them. I agree with @Penfailed that everyone should catch The Bonnevilles, they seriously rock for a twosome. DUG are worth checking a rusting country rock n roll band from Austin, Texas, they certainly rocked Puc Fada at Beyond the Pale.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

moving it to mid august meant they are now clashing with likes of lowlands/pukkelpop so probably lost a handful of potentials acts with that clash as those acts usually play both and do headline show or another festival that weekend in mainland Europe.

The traditional EP date has its drawbacks as it’s in a limbo period of just a week or two after most European festivals wrap up and international acts especially American can’t justify doing nothing about europe for an extra week just for EP and Labour Day weekend in USA is a big festival weekend and that’s usually same weekend as EP.

May/June and very early July is probably best time to grab international bands doing the primavera - Glastonbury- roskilde/rockwerchter run but nothing in Ireland camping festival wise really covers that time and you have forbidden and tons of summer headline outdoor shows in lieu

Fair enough. It's just such a dramatic dip I was wondering if there was something else behind it.

Anyway, not a lot out of the new acts for me. I'll head to The Clockworks, and maybe The Saw Doctors.

No amount of cans is going to make this undercard line-up research this evening seem great.

@desk tidy & I will be sticking an ALFOS set on and leaping about the living room as usual.

The Moonlight Meadows information page now says Reception is open from 8am Friday, so that 2pm time which I also saw must have been a typo. Happy days!

Yep. Just do it lads. It's time. EOTR was a joy last year and I've spent the whole Summer doing homework for Green Man. Half of this thread would be in heaven at either of those two. I understand the affection lots of people have for the site and the satellite areas but the kingpins at the top don't deserve your loyalty. Time to branch out.

Yes mate, we'll be there in Eco as usual with @darzog and @Kepler21 and if he can get a ticket @Seathrun66 (if he even wants one at this point). We'll be milling about Salty Dog on Thursday night, planning Festival Republic's downfall. I'm not saying I own a sniper rifle, but I am from south Down.

Having missed acts like Pearl Jam and others this summer, ive discovered FOMO isn't such a big thing. EP will pull some brilliant big acts over next couple of years, but im over that and wont be in line to get loyalty tickets unless next weekend blows my mind
