Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Are crimping ferrules safe in any electrical job?

When dealing with thinly stranded wire then I'd say yes, they effect a better quality connection and do help with keeping the stands where they need to be. I started crimping around a year ago - got a kit and ferrules in a local wholesaler, and have been using it on every stranded connection since. Just as long as the ferrules are good quality, there won't be a concern as the clamping force of the screw-terminal should make the connection with the strands even if the crimper doesn't.

Im not aware of any benefit to using ferrules aside from tidying strands

All big industrial jobs. Everything stranded is ferruelled. So yea safe enough. If its done and crimped right. If its single soild. U dont.

They help to concentrate and protect the strands so that there is less strand-loss when the screw-terminal is tightened (especially if it's bare screw terminal), meaning that you can usually pass the rated load without overheating issues at the connection. Plus they make it easier when rewiring and also provide some basic strain resistance.

Id be skeptical that there's an imroved electrical connection with ferrules as you're introducing another contact point between ferrule and conductor

Haven't noticed loose strands on coarse stranded cable to be an issue at connectors. The fine stranded would be twisted .

No doubt there's benefit in tidying up fine strands and also securing connections ,especially the fine- stranded panel flex at distribution boards where loose strands would be a major hazard

Cheap connectors and connector blocks are a problem . Some are only fit for the bin.

Id usually use Thorsman or equivalent

The wago would be more prevalent now

It's only the improved electrical connection im dubious about

Any type of panels/boxes/ distribution boards they're a necessity on the fine- stranded

The work would be shambolic without them , color coding, neatness , and bunching the fine strands together preventing erroneous connections

The ops work on lights /sockets will be all coarse stranded and solid conductors , no need for ferrules

Actually - that's one of the main features - you can use wago with ferrules but not with stranded.

At work we insist on having ferrules installed on all fine stranded panel flex, in fact it is something that we would check during the FAT.

The above are examples of some of the panels that we have had built, as can be seen all using ferrules.

Panels without ferrules would look like amateur hour

Any job in a factory for instance, without Ferrules would be sent away to be corrected. That is the case my experience anyway.
