Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Friends VW golf MK5, oil changed by a garage last time around, he mentioned they told him the drain plug was a bit stripped but it's sorted now.

I wouldn't call this "a bit" stripped, plastered in RTV, needs a new sump because of it.

Maybe it was a pig to remove the drain bolt but jesus christ the state of this.

I wouldn't go near that. Send him back to them ask for an oil change and tell them other garages have refused to work on it because of what they have done

What did they open the plug with, a bulldozer?

I didn't touch it, had to change wishbone bushes too so just did those and let him know about the sump and sent him that photo.

Don't know what they opened it with but they made absolute sh1t of it, maybe they tried to helicoil the threads but messed up and just covered the entire corner of the sump in gasket sealer.

Bit of a joke, car is a beater anyway but no car deserves this workmanship, to me that's a danger to be driving everyday.

The best part is they charged him €150 for it.

What is that crap? Is it a 'sealant' or the state of the actual sump?

    Not your ornery onager

All that black area is Sealant or RTV, who TF knows, Sump is in good nick no rust and it's not damaged on the parts I can see. Just the eyesore that a professional garage thought was a sufficient repair.

He's the NCT due soon can't wait to see what they say about that. May wait till then and go back to the garage with the NCT report.

Common issue on Alloy sumps as the ins and outs of the sump bung and damaged threads. Always had new sump bungs as spares but sometimes they were to far gone.

Many times those sumps needed to be replaced and not over tightening sump bungs to stop them leaking.

I think on this engine the drain bolt and the washer are one, you can't separate the washer from the drain bolt so new one every time.

Yes all one unit as had 4 in stock as if sump was leaking due to hard washer the sump bung was replaced.

Yeah I like the design because it forces a replacement bolt with new threads which lessens the chances of stripped threads, you'd think 😅
